I was just wondering what you think about putting your real name in your games credits.
Do you think its a bad idea?
I mean, if sombody played your game and saw your real full name why would they want to stalk you down and kill you?
What do you put in your credits?
I put my real name, 'cause I'm brave and fear no one.
Hey, why would a stalker stalk someone just because he knew their full name? Couldn't he just pick one out of the phonebook?
That's slightly paranoid.
I wouldn't worry about it, seriously.
Do you know how many other people the same name might be out there?
I put my name somewhere in my credits I'm sure. But I have a pretty common first name and last name, so it might take a stalker a little while to find me. I don't think that thats likely going to happen, but I can dream of people pursuing me in the night!
-MillsJROSS
I often use my real name, as there seems to be another squinky that makes adventure games.....
Who woulda known?
I would...and will...use my real name for my game. It's the ultimate recognition, seeing your own name as the creator or conspirator for a game. I say, why not? If people who know you see it, then that could only be good, right?
Well... As I'm also using my real name here, so...
stalkers don't stalk lonely people, it would be an empty gesture.
Oh, I was talking about me, not you. But then again I wasn't talking about me, I was just being funny. Well, ok actually I wasn't.
eric john feurstein
bring on the stalkers
i could use the company
I am already using my real name!!111!!
My real name is all over my games, my webpage and everything else I do on the Internet...it's really no big deal
I'm pretty cautious about letting my name roam around on the internet. A few of you know it, and I doubt anyone dangerous is here. Heck, I think I've even used it on a web site of mine. I'll probably put it on my games, should I finish any and release them.
But there is a reason I'm cautious: Never ever let you dad piss off a schizo who knows where you live.
I never give out my personal information to sources I don't know what they are, but I do stick my name on the ILB site aswell as in my games.
A word of advise could be that avoid using your name when dealing with more cautios areas of computer development, as the completely alegal things like cracking programs..
Let it be known that I, Andreas Mats Vilhelm Slotte, am extremely paranoid and don't give out my real name to anyone.
Let it be known that I, Antonis Vavayannis, AM a stalker and will hunt each and every one of you down!
seriously now...I use butcher because it's easy for someone to remember and because all the people that know me through the internet know and recognise me by that name...I bet no one of you can spell Antonis Vavayannis correctly without looking at it,EVER!
I don't get what the big deal is. Well, it seems people here don't mind too much, but I know so many people that are so paranoid about the 'net.
Some people even go so far as to change the names of people they know when mentioning, so they'll say, "Yes, me and... David (when the persons real name is Michelle) went to get a coffee", like giving away the persons real first name will enable somebody to hunt them down...
I dunno... maybe I'm just desensitised... I've been posting my full name... my telephone number and address all over the internet for years... havn't had a problem so far...
Wouldn't it be ironic if the above post would become the last post Toefur ever posted on this forum? :)
I'm also using my real name everywhere. In forum posts, homepage, games and everywhere else on the net. Nothing has happened to me yet. :P
I never give away my real name on the net, but that's only because I don't want Norwegians pointing out my surname is spelled wrong.
It's not like many people will even remember Telemachus Stavropoulos 30 seconds after they read it...
but still, I use "Helm" on my games, cause it's oldskool to have a nick for all your internet activities :P

That would indeed be poetic beauty.
If you've helped with Kinky Island, then i'm afraid its your real name or no name at all. I always use my real name, sometimes Mark "mods" lovegrove, and sometimes people put "Music by Mods" in there games, but I really prefer my real name being used, and I'm happy for it to be used.
I think it's sad that you wouldn't use your real name. It's not like your giving out your address, telephone number etc.
:)

My name here is basically a scrambline of my real name. And the only reason I didn't sign up with an unscrammbled name is because years ago when I was first signing on-line someone had already taken several variations of my name, so I was stuck with MillsJROSS (Justin Ross Mills being my full full name). And it grew on me, so I use it on everything I sign on to.
-MillsJROSS
There are only two places I know of on the internet where my full name is used. One is in the credits for Pleurghburg, and the other is on the RON info page. I'm not paranoid about being murdered or raped by some crazy nut, but I don't usually put my name out there very much. There's just about being somewhat anonymous that appeals to me, but I'm not exactly sure what it is.
I do the scrambling thingy too. When I do credits for movies games or comics, you'll find it's been worked on by Christine McLeod, Kris MacLoud, Chris "Mac" Lowd, Enid Sirhc-Doelcam (Read it backwards) and so forth. That way my name is all over it, but I don't need to worry about people figuring out what my real name is.
But now you know my secret, and I must kill you all. ;D
I use Goldmund because it sounds stupid.
Which reminds me:
Lucky bastards without strange letters in your real name!
I hate you!
How am I supposed to be a famous writer in, say, England, when my full name is Blazej Krzysztof Dzikowski, and "l" and "z" is hyphenated in Blazej (you read it like: "Booashay").
Better think up my writer's nom de guerre. Like Gary Cox. Or Fat Lolo. Or Philboyd Studge.
Go incognito as Andy Penis ?
;)
m0ds
Fat Lolo, I'm making a phone call right now...
Better yet, just call yourself Booashay.
It's like Booyakashah, except more Polish.
I am not really worried about giving out my real name.
But my mom is cautious about it.
I believe that there are a lot of trust worthy people on the internet. And I do agree if sombody is going to stalk sombody they'll get it out of the phone book if they can't find it in a game. And why would they kill me just because I put my name in my game.
Besides, only the people who play my game will see my name. So I don't have a prob with it.
But if my mom really doesn't want me to put my full name in, I won't. Thanx for the help.
Cautious? Screw cautious!
Me, I went ahead and met up with Gilbert Cheung while traveling in a foreign country where I bearly spoke the language. How's that for cautious? :)
I use my real name because I can't be arsed to think of a wittier one. For a brief time I called myself "GameGeezer" but gave that up because it was daft. I'm lucky in that my name is pretty common and therefore google-proof.
-Dave
I am called Phillip Dyte which is one of the strangest names ever and I highly doubt anyone else outside maybe Russia or Norway shares its dubious recognition qualities.
Hell yes. My ancestors were Norwegian pirates.
Well, I'm kinda torn on the issue. I use my name on my website and all that good stuff- and I did that so people COULD find me on google. Because I left Knoxville kind of abrubtly and figure ONE day someone might wonder about me, I dunno . I think it all comes down to what the hell you're doing and who you are. If you're a 12 year old girl with a website about your favorite boy band, I advise you not to publush your name. Or if you're working on an invention that could make you millions of dollars, do not put too much info on your website as to where you can be found etc. But I think most of us are ok, I don't think we're in the "helpless" or "potentialy theft worthy" category.
I mean I always use Flippy_D (except for one board, but that has.....circumstances), and I always have good ol' Cranky Kong here as me avatar. Everyone loves Cra-....no. Wait. That's wrong.
Putting your real name there won't help if they search for Morehead, or the other mispellings :)
Hell, when I finish my game, I'm putting my real name out there for recognition, so people can know who made that piece of crap! I'm even going to use my middle initial, to sound all important and high and mighty... Richard J. Brum
Yes, I can see it now...
We can all see it now, you just posted it.
Yea, I don't have a problem posting my name in a game. I'm not scared.
If a stalker played my (unmade) game, and wanted to kill me for some hysterical reason (maybe hates my game), then I would put boot to scrotum, then knuckles to cheek, then maybe shoot him in da legs and arms with my SOCOM. Yeah, that sounds pretty pleasant. Hey, it's just self defence, right? RIGHT?!
ARGH!
of course Las, that's why my title page's source code includes:
<META http-equiv=keywords
content="jesse morehead jesse moreland jessie moorefield jesse morefield...
YOU ASS, YOU MARKING FUN OF ME?!
ah, who am I kidding- no one will ever google me..
google gave up on me anyways
maybe it's a good way to get more and more girlfriends
and nobody would kill someone who creates video games they prefer to kill their parents or innocent children if i was a mad killer i would rather do that..
;)

Uhh... I'll misspell it a little, just in case.
For several years I've had my full name, birthdate, photos, photos of my house, full address, driving instructions and phone number up on the web. I use this nick for forums/irc since it's rarely taken, but it's formed of my name, MAttila KRIstian and I always enter the full one in irc client's real name field. I don't really see why people are so paranoid about their identity on the internet, I bet there's million times bigger risk of getting in the way of an axe murderer just by leaving your home for work every day.
So, as an answer to the question, yes, I would put my realname in the credits if I ever managed to finish my first game. It would be just plain silly to have done all that work and not take credit of it (no, I don't really get the Tierra guys :) ).
I'd use mine. It's fairly uncommon (I think 4 of us in the world) so I'd like the knowledge available that I had made the game and not some random entity. I mean, YakSpit? Who the hell would put that in credits? Besides, YakSpit already exists. However, my name's the most common in the southern US (2 of 'em) and I figure most psycho stalker types are probably from there. :)
if i was putting/having my name in the credits of something i'd have it as Craig "BOYD1981" Smith, and i only give my address to people i think of as trustworthy or if i'm getting their address first, that way i can kill them before they get to me...
i'm actually more secretive as to what BOYD stands for than my real identity.
plus giving out real details is kinda crucial when buying stuff off ebay or amazon or something, or if you want a stalker...
I use my real name. Its a super common last name (brown), and nobody it going to stalk me just based on my name. address, that I dont give out. name, okay
Tom "Snake" Provencher

My name is actually somewhat well known (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=neil+cicierega) and nobody's sent me so much as a letter.
Funny, I was just telling everyone on #AGS how my friend found out that I was netmonkey the game designer for including my name all over my games, plus the fact that my site is hosted at mixnmojo (which seems to be hot in the search engines). I guess I waited for that moment, and he thought it was pretty cool that I made games.
Due to an quite incredible balls up somewhere high up in the british government, I am registered to vote as "Iqu". That's actually how I got the name.
Besides, I also have the rather strange and expensive plan of changing my name by deed poll every month. For both the purposes of comedy and avoidance of my credit card company.
Hugs
Iqu
wow, someone got away with a real nice thread dig. I guess most of us forgot about this one to the point of thinking it was new. Hell, I almost posted again with my belief- that the fact that I'm trying to lure people to me would turn off any stalker.
when i finish my game i will put my real name so i will be rich and famous...
hi again people i'm working hard on my game i didn't let it down
actually it's getting bigger than ever.
i even haven't got the time to come on the forum
Don't tell me you forgot me...
"hello girls" and so on..."i wish you could see my muscles flexing while typing" "la porte noire a fench game" it was me
Pétaglair "ich bin back"
So when's the sequel of the mittens murder mystery coming out???
Well... Only in games, where I don't say something bad about politics, presidents, USA and other... Otherwise, I use nicknames.
haha, andriws, afarid the CIA would nail you as a terrorist and haul away your arse? I dont blame you.
Matthew Brown
I'm actually more shy about leaving my email adress than I am at leaving my full name. As far as I know, mailer-daemons won't mail spam to your home-adress. And I think the amount of axe-murdereds that travel all over the world in order to kill some random person they've never met, for no justifiable reason whatsoever, is highly overrated.
I actually know someone who was stalked by the brother of someone he met online. He didn't even know he was being stalked until the FBI talked to him. Apparently the guy lived on the other side of the country and the police stopped him in Wisconsin.
True story.
Quotewow, someone got away with a real nice thread dig.
It's that Bluke kid. At least he only found good topics, and none of those "FLASH YOUR BALLS" threads that Mods keeps starting up..
yah I put my name
I use my real name everywhere, since I... hang on a sec, there's a mysterious sounding knock at the door, gonna go look...
Ah who cares.
It's on my site.
Sure. I'd put it in my game. I'll even throw in a cameo, like me in a wall picture, and when the main character looks at it, he'll say, "Hey, it's...{insert my name here}..., the comic and game maker!"
haha, like in rob blanc!
Whoa do you know how old this thread is?
I forgot about this one. It was like back in the days I was actually working on QOL.
:)

Ask whoever it is if they'll teach me. I'd love to learn how to make a mysterious-sounding knock.
I don't think he's coming back....
I don't think I'll use my real name on my game once I finish. None of my friends would really understand adventure gaming, and would probably think I was odd if they found out I spent some of my time making these games. My name is fairly uncommon, so it'd be easy to find on Google. I prefer to remain fairly anonymous, although a few AGSers know my real name. I probably sound a bit paranoid.
i use my STREET name. word.
actually my mum said to me the other day that im not gonna be putting my real name in this game im making am i? shes a teacher and was worried her kids might get hold of it and be shocked by the swearing and violence and whatnot.
i used my surname in the title of an album my old band put out and that worried my mum too for the same reason. she is a wuss.
...Will, you're a member of the nn2s forums, right ?!
what kind of coincidence is this ?
I use Chris Remo on stuff all the time. I've never had any problems so far. Besides remixor, another screen name I use just as frequently is "cremo", a nickname that originated back in high school because I have one of those few names that is actually pronouncable when you take the first letter of the first name plus the last name.
I use my name everywhere! I'm proud of it.
i use a fake name, Tim Schafer.
i don't think anyone suspects anything so far.
ahem, sorry
I've had my real name in the Internet for ages. Lately I've been trying to put even more information about myself to the net. If someone knocked on my door and said "hey, you're the guy from the Internet" it would be just too cool.
I have my diary online at http://stck.daug.net/ and pictures of my home (with address) at http://www.uta.fi/~elina.maria.mattila/webortaasi and so on, so I think it would be silly NOT to put my name in the credits.
I want to be found and known, and having a unique name in the whole wide world (as I do) helps it quite a lot.
I suppose there's nothing wrong with it... it's not like you have to post your Social Security number along with it or anything...
...but I'm a little nuts, so I always use a fake name anyways.
"Rusty Shackleford" has done me well so far.
I prefer Dr. Van Nostrum
My Dick Hurtz name has gotten me off. I mean, far.
games? MAKE games? damn, I KNEW I was missing out on something...
C.
Yeah, I use mine...
Because it's a reasonably common name, and I don't believe in this whole stalker crap..
But I was worried a while ago...
A couple of weeks before Operation Iraqi Freedom, I made a game for MAGS, which sorta took the piss outta Saddam Hussein...
About two weeks after, I had a thought...
"What if we lose?"
Okay, so it's kinda stupid, since Iraq couldn't possibly win, but if they had of, I could imagine the Iraqi secret police searching the internet, finding the game, and knocking on my door (When they invade England, lol..), and shouting "Actung!" and such like...(Well, I don't know Arabic, okay?) then shooting me in the head..
Yikes..
