Title: How to call the one who corrupts? EDIT. Link with Music
Post by: Nikolas on Sat 23/07/2005 08:25:58
I don't know where else to turn to...
The problem is my poor English.
I'm trying to find a word to describe an object, a piece of music actually, that has the ability to corrupt.
The Noun for persons or objects of corruption.
It doesn't have to have the same root (corrupt). Anything.

Just to be clear. It has nothing to do with sexual or anything like that.
I'm trying to find out how to call someone who turns everything into Evil.

Any help, please?

Let's see

A demonic piece of music.

An insidious piece of music.

A subversive piece of music.

Hope that helps a bit.

Noun? I'm not a native English speaker, so I would appreciate correction, but here are the words I found in my 30-yr old dictionary:

Corrupt (as in, a corrupt person);
Corrupter (he who corrupts, I guess, I'd never seen this one);
Corruptible (as in, that person can be corrupted, he's corruptible);
Corruptive (beats me).

EDIT - For some reason, "Corruptible" has stuck in my mind...

Could it be ... subliminal? Or not?

I know exactly what you're talking about, but I can't seem to think atm.

Usually when talking about friends, music, comic books, situations etc. that you believe have a detrimental effect on, say, your child, you might term them corrupting influences.

It doesn't roll off the tongue though. A single word would be more pleasing in it's unity.

How about stuff like "That sort of music corrupts modern youth", rather than "That sort of music is whatever"?

Something to do with poison??
(Not a native speaker, but "poisonous " is my idea for this sort of things...)

YES!

Exactly that. I'm trying to write music that corrupts youth. Exactly that. That is why I'm searching for a single word-term to name my song (actually an orchestral piece).

The reason for that piece is that I don't believe that any music can corrupt youthfull minds. And I'm trying to see how far can I go in the opposite direction. Talk about weird ideas :P

music that poisons the mind?
I think Zor is closest with "subliminal", but "subliminal" also has the effect that it was done secretly. Music that corrupts needn't be like that

Oh. In that case, consider "Corruptible". Sounds sorta right to me.

heh...but Rui...it's the people that are corruptible. Not the music. The music is what DOES the corrupting

Maybe I'm thinking in Portuguese terms and grammar. Or, most likely, I'm just making a huge mess in my mind. In either case, nevermind.

If you're thinking more along the lines of 'defile', that's a pretty cool two-dollar word you could use. The context of defile, of course, is to make something unclean or to profane it. Something along the lines of:

Defiler

Though that almost sounds like a program for mass file deletion, or something like that. Oh well. That's the best I could come up with at present.

Additional: Was I the only one who immediately assumed this was a thread on advice to summon elder horrors, from the title?

Alright, then ... Superliminal?

Actually now that I think about it, maybe it sounds a little bit like advice to summon elder horrors... sorry for that and thank you all

We don't take to kindly to the ole Nyarlaphotep 'roun these parts sonny.

possibly, you could just say "bad seed", which can be used to term a person who corrupts those around them. Possibly.

Might not be quite what you're after but how about deleterious (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=deleterious/) or malefic (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=malefic/)?

In direct answer to your question, someone or something that corrupts would be a "corrupter" (or "corruptor"). This is a real word that you'll find in the dictionary.

However, in English this kind of thing tends to be expressed with an adjective "(a corrupting influence"), rather than as a noun. (I wonder if the thinking is that the song isn't the corrupter, the person who wrote the song is.) Here are some likely candidates:

subversive (like Bt argues)
This is a good one. It has more the sense of inciting political rebellion than causing moral corruption, though.
corrupting
Obviously. It's probably the simplest way to express what you want.
perverting
Essentially synonymous with "corrupting." If you don't like "corrupter," how about "perverter"?
seductive
As in "Seduction of the Innocents". Has the sense of tempting or luring someone into something, the wrongness of which is implied. However, the main use is to seduce romantically or sexually.
seditious
Like "subversive," this means inciting rebellion. It has an even more sinister tone to it.
perfidious
Means treacherous. Strongly negative.

Thank you everyone...

I was off line for a couple of days now.

I just saw all this. Again thank you.

Well when I'm done writting the piece, that's the end of August,  I'll post it to the critics lounge (the orchestral score in pdf format). When I have a recording (maybe never, but I may be lucky) I'll post that too, so you all now what I was trying to do.

Cheers everyone. ;D

Ok.

I don't know if anyone is interested in this, but since I promised to do so here it is:

Link:http://rapidshare.de/files/4880826/Perniciosus.mp3.html
After clicking, you have to choose FREE on the bottom of the page.

It's 8 Mb (BIG!) and 8'40" duration.

Piano Solo. I used GigaPiano in Cubase SX.

The Title, after all your help, and THANK YOU ! :o is: "Perniciosus" (From the Latin for Pernicious).

So that's it. Every critic good or bad, please do so.

Beware though, it is a bit on the difficult side, it does remind a little bit of jazz, maybe, but generally it is contemporary (not so much, but...) piano music. "Clasical". The first 4 minutes are slow and the other 4 and a half are fast. That's all.

I just posted it here instead of the critics lounge, because of the thread...
