Well I've been doing a lot of research lately, and I just can't found out anything on how to make music the way Lucasarts did for their games like Loom, Foa and Monkey Island etc.
I don't want to get the hardware, but I was wondering if there's any software out there capable of producing those kind of sounds from a midi file perhaps. Maybe a plugin for Fruity Loops?

Does anyone have any ideas that can help me?

I was interested in this for Automation, I wanted to sound effects like I heard from Indiana Jones and such. The level pull and door opening sounds are embedded in my brain. I think it's a matter of hardware of the past that made those sounds but if anyone can emulate them it'd be neat to hear.

Well I have got an old laptop lying around (32 meg ram haha), and I found its sound card plays midis with a really old school feel -- almost like those of Lucasarts, but not exactly the same. Really similiar in fact. So what I was thinking of doing is sequencing the tracks in midi, loading them onto the laptop, then connecting a cable from the line out into the microphone port on my other pc, and recording them.
Quite a tedious method, but I was just wondering if there wasn't perhaps a software solution out there.

there is an dos old app for making adlib music called Rad Tracker (i also think there may be one called Adlib Tracker), it can't export to any formats usable by AGS but you could capture the music with other software.
it does rely on samples/instruments though, if i remember right a few do come with it as well as some example tunes.
the only thing i can think of for using in FL is the Fruity DX10 VST or anything else that uses FM synthesis.

External links in particular.

If you're just after the general "kind of sounds", rather than accurate emulation, as Boyd says any FM synthesizer is potentially useful, if you're willing to learn to use it, or find decent patches.

GM (General Midi), I believe (not sure though), has some limited sound effects towards the end of the patch. The patch is 127 instruments, some of which are empty, for some limited synthesis use, and the last 20 or so should be soudn effects. I do think that the new sound cards that COME with GM still can produce the same sound effects... :-/

Ironically the only way to make sure that someone hears a Midi exactly as you create it is to... put it through a tracker and get a digital audio file.

I also want to try and replicate some AdLib instruments though, they have a quality which sounds more pleasant than General Midi. Probably just my Nostalgia Earplugs though.
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

Windows has a Sound Recorder, you can set it on digital input or something and you'll record what the speakers play. You can change the quality or the recording too. Still tedious but in most cases it sounds better that with a cable (unless the system slows down because it's recording and playing...).

I once tried to record sound from my old computer to my protalbe radio with tape deck, then play it back and record it on my new computer. Horroble, horroble. And that was before mp3.
