It gives you 5 minutes to write all 49 countries! So test your geography skills now, and let us kow how it went. I myself could just not remember what Österreich was in English, (only german :P ), Austria that is... oops, that's a clue to you, oh well, don't make the same mistake I did.
When learning geography Turkey was not in europe, but in Asia... I'm not sure what's the story right now. I'm actually looking for info not to disrespect anything or anyone of course!
Other than that I forgot the netherlands and another 20+ :'(
Hey, this thing's broken ... it didn't accept Czechoslovakia or Yugoslavia.
I was hellbent on nailing all those former Yugoslavia states that I missed many obvious.
Also, getting the English spelling right took some extra time in a few cases.
10 left when time was up.
oh man I feel really bad. 23 left at timeout. Bosnia, Cyprus and Armenia amongst them. I don't feel so bad for stuff I just didn't know the spelling of like Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Andorra, Luxembourg, Azerbaijan
The combined mindpower of Becky and I left us with 16 left at the end. Two heads are only slightly better than one! Except Andail's.
Yeah,
Spoiler
Azerbaijan is a bitch, we write it Azerbaitzan
, who'd think tz goes to j :) Also, there's 12 new countries for the rest of the people.

You've got to be kidding about Yugoslavia, but it's the Czech Republic, of course ;)
Anyway, missed Bosnia, Andorra, Armenia, Malta and San Marino.
Bah, still pretty good, I guess :p

Well you hammer in Holland 200 times and wonder, why the hell doesn't it allow this. Then you realise the country is called Benelux, and everything is saved.
Btw, Tuomas, do you in your original post claim to have nailed all countries except one (Austria)? That's quite extraordinary. I intend to test you 'live' if you show up at next Brittens/Mittens! :)

Benelux definitely is a good hint, but it's a union, not a country ;)
I was left with seven at the end. However, I only missed Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein because I didn't manage to spell them correctly. On the other hand, I doubt I would have got Cyprus if I hadn't glanced at this thread. As for Andorra, Monaco, (The) Vatican, Malta, and San Marino... yeah, whatever!
Missed 22... For an ignorant American, that's not pretty bad.
Ah well, 35 missed...
Fuck. I got like 14.
But lets see if you can name all of the United States!

hah, I couldn't remember Oregon.

Too bad I won't be there, but we'll make it on 2008 :) (gives me time to practise). But then yeah, I claim I got all but one. It's easy, my sister's in eastern Europe now, and she keeps sending cards from all the slavic countries and that. And Finland's football team was in Azerbaijan just now, or around there. Helps a lot :) Besides I'm studying for the entrance test to international politics and research of foreign politics, so that also helps :)

Aww bugger, I was left with 20/50, 30 ones I knew (when I saw them) but couldn't name :P And they call Americans ignorant ;)
I could't remember Azerbaijan (always thought it was in Asia already..) and Liechtenstein escaped due to spelling. Not bad.
The USA was tougher - 39/50.
After I don't know.. 20 times? I managed to answer all, got a spare minute left :)
I got 25 out of the 49. The countdown timer tensed me enough to miss quite a few that I was familiar with, but then there were around 12 which I would never have guessed.
Weirdly enough, I was far worse with the names of the states (only 17), considering how those things are constantly bombarded at me from the TV (even the joke about not knowing all the states). To my defence, however, so many are not spelt the way they are pronounced.
The names of the united states are not as reasonable for europeans to know as -you'd hope- it would be for americans no know european countries. It's like asking a non-greek to name all the various locales in greece. People will know Athens and perhaps an island or two they've had vacations in. Knowing Winsconsin and South carolina is not as important as knowing where France and Germany are.
Of course we can name a few states because of pop culture and stuff. It tells a lot what games I grew up on that the very first state I inputted was Oregon. Anyway, I got 18 states, then grew bored of the timer.
I got 27 states. It would have been 28, except I spelt Mississippi wrong.
Edit: 24 countries. I don't know my Europe. :-\
A bus stops and two Italian men get on. They sit down and engage in an animated conversation. The lady sitting behind them ignores them at first, but her attention is galvanized when she hears one of the men say the following: "Emma come first. Den I come. Den two asses come together. I come once-a-more. Two asses, they come together again. I come again and pee twice. Then I come one lasta time."
"You foul-mouthed sex obsessed swine," retorted the lady indignantly. "In this country... we don't speak aloud in public places about our sex lives..."
"Hey, coola down lady," said the man. "Who talkin' abouta sexa? I'm a justa tellin' my frienda how to spella 'Mississippi'."
Missed 17 from Europe.
Tried to spell Liechtenstein about ten times but never got it right :)
Missed all of the balkans except Albania and Greece. I mean most of those other countries didn't exist when I studied geography :)
And from the mini countries remembered to put in only Andorra, Monaco and San Marino.
EDIT: Missed 24 states from US. So I knew more than a half. Do I pass :)
The similiar test about Africa is a lot harder ;) In that test I didn't know even half of them...
Missed 11 European countries (including totally obvious ones like Russia), and I couldn't think of 21 states somehow. It's really hard to think when you are staring at a clock. I expect things would have come to me easier if there was a blank map with the state borders marked, like on the Europe quiz.
I think from a geographical perspective knowing American states is quite a bit more important than knowing the areas of Greece (or the counties of the UK). About seven individual states have larger populations than Greece, and the majority are larger in area. That's not to say they're as culturally important as Greece has been for millenia, but I'd expect people to know them as much as I'd expect people to know the small countries in Europe.

I'd love to give a go. When we were 14 or something they made us do a test on this at school. You'd have to know 4/5ths or 3/4ths to pass. I got full score then after studying for hours :D

Sounds like a really useful test to prepare you for a life of playing pub quiz machines.
