Yay! After months of trying one thing and another, I finally could install a modem driver on Linux (RedHat). I have one of those nasty Winmodems which aren't recognized as modems by Linux.

I have little knowledge of Linux and I couldn't connect to Internet from it (because it couldn't use the modem) so finding the correct chipset of the modem, finding the correct driver, installing it, running the pseudo-modem and configuring the kppp to connect was quite an oddissey for me! I'm not quite sure if I'll be able to do it again. :P

But now I am very proud to say I can use Mozilla under Linux and I can write to these forums like a real... umm... Linux user. So... Linux users... cheers!  8)

Do you have any bad experiences trying to install a winmodem on linux? Or any modem at all?

:P Weldone in getting to the linux community.

I would post of all the internet problems I had with my linux live cd. but... i had none  :P

Kairus

You mean Knoppix?

I couldn't connect at all to Internet with Knoppix, it didn't recognize my modem just like RedHat. Even if I had known at that time that it was because I had a Winmodem I probably couldn't have understood enough of it to install a driver.

It can't be any harder than trying to play games or use your old software on a windows machine.

I know there are no many 'cool' games in Linux, but I don't play many games lately and I still have Windows 98 and old games work pretty well in it. :)

Never used VDMSound, DOSBox and/or SummVM, I assume?

Anym

DOSBox and ScummVM aren't exclusively for Windows, you know?
I look just like Bobbin Threadbare.

I didn't have a problem with my modem, but when I first tried to tackle Linux It took 2 days to figure out it, at the time, didn't support Ultra 66 cables.
