Title: I need more music!
Post by: Mr_Threepwood on Thu 29/09/2005 04:17:56
I need some new music to listen to, I was wondering if anyone could reccomend anything?

I like metal, rock, acid, glitchcore/breakcore, and acid music

However I hate metal/rock music where the guys are just screaming, or ones where they are trying to have some anti war/peace message (IE System of a down, disturbed).

I dont wanna get a flame war started here about System of a down or disturbed however, SA has enough of that :).  Anyhow can someone reccomend an artist?

Try out Dream Theater. They are Progressive Metal/Rock, so they might be what you are looking for. They are one of my favourite bands. They have had a broad range of styles in the past and present so depending on what album you listen to you will get a different taste of them.

If you want metal the check out the album Train Of Thought. My favourite album is probably Scenes From A Memory and it is a whole CD that tells a story. It is very good and has many elements to it. Their older CD's, 'Images and Words' and 'Awake' are also very good and up their with their greatest. The newest album from them is Octavarium and it is one of their best. The title track from it is a 24 minute long materpiece.

I think I'm going to listen to that album now :=.

Well... I dunno if I can suggest any of the categories you mentioned, but I can point you to some good bands and singers

Ben Folds (or Ben Folds Five)
Jack Johnson
John Vanderslice
MK Ultra
...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead
The Pixies
The Postal Service

There are more, but I hate lists.

Well here's my recommended list:

- Nirvana (best band ever IMO ;D )
- Red Hot Chili Peppers
- The Offspring
- Finger Eleven
- Staind
- The Foo Fighters
- And tons more ... but none of the hip-hop stuff (shudder!)

Anyway, that's my opinion on music, I'm sure everyone here has tons more!

I'll just be the referee here for a second. lgm has BAD taste in music, Zor has fairly GOOD taste in music. I recommend just about everything Zor did but if you really wanna be blown away, you've gotta get your old Kiss albums out.

Kiss = rock.

If you want something new though, I can't recommend enough The Darkness. It's sheer beauty.

Kinoko is partially right.  Unfortunately, she's also partially wrong.

The Darkness is good... until it gets old.

And LGM's taste is not entirely bad.  The Postal Service is one of the most delightful listens you'll ever have.  I've got to side with LGM on this one... Postal Service is highly recommended to anyone who isn't Mr_Threepwood.

Mr. T, if you're looking for something outside of that dreary genre selection that you've named, try out Postal Service.  It's feel good music.  Except for that one song that's a bit of a downer... (still a good song though)

I'll just throw out one band that has stood on top of my list for about two years.  Check out the Decemberists.  They don't sing songs, they sing stories.  And one of the songs stories on their latest album is actually a sea shanty!  You can't beat that shit.  Although again, not really your taste, Mr. T.  Sorry.

-Dream Theater
-Vanden Plas... what else
But do check out DT, actually Scenes is my fav too, but hardly mainstream
-then this dutch band Lemur voice
-more? Arena? Great band too...
I don't much fancy the style you do, but try these out... actually if you don't want to make it hard, there's a page for samples of all of these... www.progarchives.com I know I know, it's weird stuff, but search these bands :D

hmmh, I should probably add Porcupine Tree here... Lightbulb Sun is the most listened album of theirs in my stereo thing

Zor's list isn't one of bad recommendations, but I'm assuming Mr. T would need something that he hadn't heard of before.  I don't know that I could come up with any that most everyone hadn't heard of but:

-If I want something raucous, Dropkick Murphys

-Something background-y, God Speed Ye Black Emperor (some would say it should be actively listened to.. when doing that, it bores the hell out of me) or Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

-Into it for guitar licks? Jack Johnson's not a bad rec, Luther Vandros is pretty fun.

-Easy listening type? The Postal Service is a little too feel-goody for my taste, the Darkness *is* fun until it's not, Jet's cool if you can ignore pretentiousness, The Vines are halfway good though it varies between crapola and genius.  If I want something easy, semi-retro & not taking it too seriously, The Smoking Popes is the epitome of mandatory drunken, grinning karaoke.

-NiN's newest isn't too bad if you're into industrial, but I still prefer their old-to-middle stuff.

-If I want to listen to music merely as inspiration to look up the band's address and bitch-slap every last one of them, it'd have to be Maroon 5.

I would suggest HORSE The Band, but I don't think you would like it because of the vocalist. You might, however, like Game Over (http://www.nintendometal.com/).

Kinoko is partially right.Ã,  Unfortunately, she's also partially wrong.

Sorry Vince, but taste is subjective. You can like whatever you want and you can never be wrong in any way. If by any chance there is some kind of analysis in the way well, this has to be taken according to the personality of the person who made it.

And this goes also for Kinoko. Are you ready to judge [[lgm]s taste in music. I am not. And you know I deal with music all my life. What makes you so sure that he/she (no time to check) has a bad taste and you have a good one... So subjective...

This is what keeps me from being so sure about myself. I can never be sure I'm right...!

Anyways...

I do listen to some harcore stuff, but I always thoguht of these as partially mainstream. It seems though that it's not:

NIN. Especially if you can get your hands on some videos then...
dEUS. I've been listening to them for like 5 years and still do. There has to be something about them that doesn't let the listener get tired. Imagine that I deal with music all the time, and I'm picky! (being a composer blah blah blah...)
KORN. I don't know, I dig these guys.
Of course System of a Down. But you don't like them so... I did enjoy some video clips of them... And it's funny how these Arabian (I've no idea whre they are from, but not the States), made it so far! Amazing, don't you think...

And let me kill you with this(!!!): Carpenters. There are some songs, which are great, but yo uwill get bored on them pretty quicklly. HOwever I have to say that her voice and his arrangments are great...

I'm sorry Nik, but that's just ignorant.  All opinions are wrong unless they coincide with mine.  It's just a fact of life.  Some people are dumb, and they are the ones that disagree with me.

By the way, I'm being sarcastic here.  As I was above.  As was Kinoko.  Don't get worked up about people making cracks at someone else's music tastes on an online board.  We're all friends here and we all understand that music preferences differ.  It's just more fun to make broad generalisations like "All of that crap you listen to is crap," than it is to say "Excuse me, but might I politely disagree with your contention that John Vanderslice is, and I quote: 'da bomb'."

No matter how much someone identifies with their music, they should never get angry about someone else not liking it, because then everyone in the world would be angry.

And by the way, Nik.  Your music sucks.

Silly Kinoko. Kiss are for kids!

Well, not really. I just don't enjoy hard rock as much as I do alternative, softer music.

But just because someone doesn't like (or simply doesn't list) any of your favorite bands, doesn't mean they're taste in music sucks. I don't know how many times Al and I have debated over this.

I didn't list any of the big name rock bands from the 70's because surely Mr_threepwood has heard of them before! As far as I am concerned, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and The Who all rock hardcore.

Oh, also check out some Weezer and Neutral Milk Hotel! Ben Kweller and Franz Ferdninand can also be quite rockin.'

Oh, and let us not forget Mr. Bungle and Jellyfish (if you can find them)

Here are some really great metal bands

Tourniquet is the best thrash metal band (IMO), I love them (especially the album "Where Moth And Rust Destroy"), they're great. www.tourniquet.net

Theocracy is melodic power metal. The first album (composed and recorded by completely one guy alone) is very good. Now the band has a bassist and a drummer instead of one guy doing everything, so I expect the second album to be much better.

Nightwish is epic (I think?) metal, the music is a successful blend of metal and orchestral music, they're my favourite band ever. They have a female singer and a lot of people argue whether her singing matches the music or not, but I think it does. However, I'd prefer it if the bassist sang a bit in every song, because his voice rocks

Nightwish is Finnish \O/ and I too listened to them until the bassist came in and ruined their style and their songs! Because I really think he did... some older records suggested

I just wanted to pop in and support my light alternative brotha, LGM.

Weezer, R.E.M., Pearljam, thats the shit right there, bow before it, before it overcomes you're ass with it's flat out coolness...

I've heard almost all of the older songs and saw that the style didn't change a lot. I like both new and old. All bands change by time, but Nightwish is quite consistent and you can't blame the bassist for the change. After all, Tuomas (not you :P) writes almost all the songs, so I don't think Marco would affect the music style.

QuoteAnd it's funny how these Arabian (I've no idea whre they are from, but not the States), made it so far! Amazing, don't you think...

System of a Down are Armenians actually. I guess the reason behind their anti-war message is the Armenian genocide and especially their song P.L.U.C.K is deticated to the genocide victims.

Let me introduce you to a band that will give you hours of listening.

The bands name is Savatage (http://www.savatage.com). And you can listen to a lot of clips and full songs of them right here (http://www.savatage.com/multimedia/audiovideo.html). (All legal, it's their own off. site)

Scroll all the way down and listen to the clips for 'Dead winter dead' and 'The wake of Magellan'. I'm not going to tell you anything about it, to keep you as unbiased as possible.

Enjoy!

Get these five albums. All from my favourite period for music, 1978 - 1982:

They are all rather obvious picks. The best by each artist (imo) but if you love music you should give them a listen. Several listens before judging them, preferably.

David Bowie: Scary Monsters -80
The Clash: London Calling -79
Elvis Costello & The Attractions: Imperial Bedroom (Get Happy!! will also do) -82
King Crimson: Discipline -81
Talking Heads: Remain In Light -80

Could I recommend this to you?:

http://pandora.com/

Not a band, a website. Basically you put in band(s) you like and it'll play some of their stuff, along with other selected music of a similar style from bands you may not know so well. It's not always great, but sometimes can be bang on the money.

As for bands I personally like:

Led Zeppelin
Foo Fighters
Queens Of The Stone Age
Nirvana
RHCP
Pink Floyd
The Subways
Cream
Derik & The Dominoes
Kyuss
Desert Sessions
Eagles Of Death Metal
Nine Black Alps

Well. There's a lot more than that. But they're the ones that come immediately to mind, and in retrospect, probably the most "mainstream" stuff I like. My playlist is full of...er..."one hit wonders" (for want of a better term - they probably just have more hits of which I am unaware...) & stuff I'll have forgotten about for like a year before glorious re-discovery.

Anyway.....er....the point of my post? Oh yes. Pandora. Give it a shot, hope it helps.

Pantera.

What? It's the only band you need if you're into hard rock/metal.

Also Kyuss.

Mm, Kyuss indeed. Glad to see there's people here who appreciate them. Brilliant band. Still the unchallenged masters of the stoner/desert-rock. :)

And just for the sake of namedropping good bands/artists springing to my mind at the moment:
Bohren & Der Club of Gore, Mr Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, The Mars Volta, Bauhaus, Neurosis, Skörda (http://www.skorda.tk/"), Katatonia, Dead Kennedys, The Residents, Einstürzende Neubauten, GYBE!, Placebo among many others...
Title: Re: I need more music!
Post by: Visti on Sun 02/10/2005 15:58:24
I can back all of those up, favorites being Mars Volta, Mr. Bungle and GYBE!

If GYBE! tickles your fancy, look into Mogwai and Sigur Rós.

Also I should recommend Katatonia too, if you can handle the vocals. I just find it so boring, but I can't place a finger on the music. In fact, their instrumental tracks are incontrollably awesome.

Which reminds me. Opeth. Check it out. There are growl tracks, but if that's not your thing, they have some outstanding clean vocal tracks.
