I offer myself to improve games.php

Hi all,

AGS and it's community made me rediscover the pleasure of Adventure games so I feel I should give back something.

There are now almost 900 games in this site and, in my opinion, there are too few options to filter or sort this huge list. I would like to use rating, advisories, ... to find more easily the games I will probably like.

I know a bit of PHP and have some spare time now, so I offer myself to give a try if site owners think it can be good.

(I have seen the digest, it's good and can still be improved by adding fields. Anyway I would prefer to have filtering or sorting options in the regular games list too because it gives more information of the game.)

The admins can see my email, contact directly if you prefer so.

Ah, and thanks for AGS and the games!

We've discussed allowing to sort/filter by rating before, but discounted it for various reasons.

As for your offer, thanks for offering to help out. If there are any features that we need implementing I'll certainly consider it.

Where can I find a past discussion about filtering? Lately I've found it strange - I'm positive you used to be able to sort the games by their % rating etc...

Questioning the all-mighty CJ? That's it Mods...you're fired.

Yes. Fired indeed.

I'd find some sort of filtration system useful...but maybe that's just me?

Evil

It was argued that people didn't play all of the games and voting would be skewed leaving a lot of decent games unrated and underplayed.

m0ds

Well, I only question it because lately - and I don't know why - I've wanted to search for games under various pretences, like most popular by rating, largest in download size etc. I thought it was possible once, that's all. Plus, I'm always on fire! ;)

LimpingFish

I agree that adding new filter options would be nice. Handy too.

Filesize, vote rating, etc.

You could even filter games that contained speech, first person - third person, experimental, etc.

Reminds me of Underdogs, actually.

Plus, I too remember a thread like this before. A pretty long one, if memory serves.

Oops! True, there are a lot of previous threads requesting this feature. I did a quick search on the matter before posting but not the right one, sorry for arising an old request. (Pesky users! We never learn)

Something that was discussed in the past and many people liked, is a list of "if you like this game, you might also like <foo>".

Here's how that works: if you rate a game, you get to type one game that (you believe) is similar. When other people look at the game, the interface lists the top three of those "also" games that had three or more nominations.

Something else that may be nice is to "show all games rated by <foo> ordered by rating". Akin to the above, if you know foo's tastes run similar to yours, this tells you more about them.

(edit) oh yeah, and categorizing by genre is also a great idea (that was also discussed and liked before). It may also help to categorize by style somewhat (i.e. are the graphics realistic or cartoony, and is the game serious or parody).

If I understand this correctly you want a system like fx IMDB where the bottom of a movie's page says "If you like this movie then you might also like these movies..." and then there's a couple of surgestions.
I think that would be a super idea.
I also second LimpingFish's idea with the different categories. It would make it easier to find the games you where looking for...

It would be good to have a place to add links to external review sites, too

I think the games page is fairly decent. I'm not saying it can't be better, or that we shouldn't try to make it better. It's always nice with new features.

What I hate the most about the games page is that most of the time, you just have to pick a game out of 900 games randomly, and hope it's good.
I'm composing the music for this game:
