Just wanted to throw a thread on this. I distinctly remember ICQ being phased out by people and the transition to the MSN era.
The end of an era. I was using ICQ a lot while at university. I don't remember when exactly I stopped using it and switched to Skype.
I had no idea it was still going. I had an account at one point but rarely used it. I was all about MSN Messenger.
I noticed it. :~(
I was still using it. Albeit I was the only one still using it, all my friends/family moved to something else. But I liked having it there lingering, for those "old" friends to still be able to find me (if they wanted to).
Wow... I don't think I've used ICQ in like 20 years.

And it ended up outliving MSN.
It goes to show that there is something to be said for being a protocol over a platform. IRC is still going.
I literally thought ICQ was already dead. Nice to know it hung around a lot longer than I thought.

Me too. Now I'm wondering who was using it all these years.
