Title: Idea for Background Blitz Challenge
Post by: rharpe on Sun 28/08/2005 22:25:27
I'm a bit new to the activities on the forum so please bare with my unkowingness of past Background Blitz challenges.

Here is an idea I came up with on another pixel-based forum:
The idea here is to go back to the early days of computers and remind yourself that there are only 16 colors to work with. The palette known as EGA (Enhanced Graphics Adapter.) Your mission is to utilize this palette to the best of your ability, (as did the game artists of Sierra Online, Lucas Arts, Electronic Arts, Accolade, Acclaim, SSI, Apogee,  and the few others that were around during this period,) to create the best 320 x 200 Background ever!

Here's an example I made a while back: (http://home.oct.net/rharpe/061.gif)
(Not the best example, as you can see there is a lot of black space that could be in use or detailed.)

1.) you must use all the colors in the EGA palette (http://home.oct.net/rharpe/ega_pal.gif)
2.) you must fill the whole 320 x 200 space, (no negative space, also known as "wasted space".)
3.) you must make it from scratch, (no rips/edits.)
4.) you must create it within a 4 hour period... no going over! (Once you hit 4 hours exactly, you save your image then submit it, even if it is not finished.)
5.) Animation is optional, but not required, but graded higher for extra effort.

So how's that for a challenge?

Why can't you just win the background blitz and set those as the rules? :P

I say this because i don't think it'd work as a weekly (2 weekly etc) competition, maybe a one off special

Yup, PP is right, we already have this. But we can convert this into a thread for discussing if we could stick a weekly "EGA BG COMPETITION". My vote goes for no, if somebody asks, there are a lot of activities. Nice BG, though...

This is just an idea, not a standard for the rest of the Background Blitz Challenges. You would only do this one time. I don't want to change anything that you are doing here in the forum... just had an idea I'd submit, that's all. :)

The rules make it more of a challenge... (If I just said to make an EGA background, that really wouldn't be a challenge, now would it?)

Either you love the idea or you hate it...

I actually did this once already as a BG Blitz ... it was quite some time ago.

There were only a few entries and most of them lacked that "classic EGA" feeling (if I remember correctly)

Truth to tell, it didn't go over very well.  Then again ... few of my blitzes seem to work well.

Hmm ....

Anyway, I tried searching for it, but couldn't find it.

I guess that means this idea is shot down?

Oh well I tried...  :'(

This already happened in pixelation, didn't it? Why retry it here?

Pixelation is no more.  :'(

Yes, Helm, you are absolutely correct. I did set this challenge up over at Pixelation, but like MrColossal said, "not everyone visits Pixelation?" So I figured I'd present it here.

It's up to the mods if they even want to allow this to happen. Just thought I'd try it here and see what kind of response it would get.

Oh well, maybe I'll think up another challenge and see if it flies here.  ;D
