As great as both look, it's neither, I'm afraid...

Well, even if this turns out nothing, I'm still getting to know about great anime series.

Yeh I must admit, I too have been having fun trying to solve this riddle.
Although I'm starting to run out of steam...
Are you sure it was made in the 80's? or is it possible that it was made in earlier and you just saw a repeat?

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

Very possible, but I was born in '86 and saw it until I was about 10 or so, always on a tape. When it was taped, and whether it was taped off a repeat... it might conceivably be early 90s, therefore.

Or it could have been a repeat. Sorry I can't be clearer...

By Jove I think I've found it!!!

If this isn't it I'll eat my hat.  Just read this description:

It's Korean and it's called "Phoenix-bot Phoenix King" and also known as "Defenders of Space" to the western world.

"The film itself opens with a tracking shot of some bizarrely shaped asteroids (I think they're supposed to be asteroids...) that look like something out of a Hellboy comic, only less competently drawn. While supposedly awe-inspiring "aaah aaah" music plays on the soundtrack, a...thing blasts off from one of the weirdly shaped asteroids and lands on a planet that may or may not be Earth (more on that later), triggering volcanic eruptions, floods, and the awakening of a giant magic chicken. Well, okay, it's supposed to be a phoenix, but it sure LOOKS like a freakin' chicken. The chicken phoenix then solidifies into a bird-shaped rock formation on top of a mountain. Cue the opening credits sequence, in which disco-tastic theme music plays over a pan of a still painting depicting the Giant Magic Chicken overlooking "Phoenix King", a robot that's a shameless duplicate of the Transformer Inferno."

THAT'S IT!!

Very well done! When I read "mountain in shape of phoenix" I knew it.

Thanks so very much! Wish I had a prize of some sort to give you.

I could do with a couple of grand in the bank if you can manage it.

The funny thing is I found it almost by accident... I'd given up on it, and went to Wikipedia to see if 'Once Upon a Time in Japan' had an entry on there, but it didn't, so I clicked on the most relevant search result, which was a list of animated feature films.  My Firefox find-bar was still there and still had 'phoenix' written in it, so I went to click in the box with the intention of typing 'japan' or 'once' in it to find OUATIJ, but I accidentally clicked Next instead of clicking in the box...

And there it was on my screen, Phoenix-bot Phoenix King.

Can I just say, the actual cartoon you were looking for looks much worse (blatantly ripping off characters from other cartoons, etc.) than many of the suggestions that turned out to be incorrect.  :P

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

Yeah, my thoughts exactly... Still, it looked good when I was a kid. I'll be sure to bump this thread when I get my hands on it and say whether it was worth it or not.

Still, I'll be checking out a lot of the other suggestions, especially Firebird. So it's not a total loss. :D

Oh great you found it ^_^ The next thing I was going to suggest would have been Go-Bots....god help you if it had been Go-Bots :p lolz.  Anyway, cool, glad you found em.

Sorry it wasn't Voltron. I don't have much personal experience with such series as these. I just remember Voltron from my own childhood.

Glad to hear you got this all sorted out though. :=
