Title: In the dumps
Post by: mozza on Tue 13/12/2005 08:19:00
Some people may find this interesting in some sadistic, mad, or even humourous way. I have decided to post this thread because I feel that I need to confide in some people about what is happening to me.
About 2 months ago, I hurt my knee playing squash. I thought it was just some sort of extremely painful sprain, as they usually are. After about 1 month, the pain wasn't getting any better, so I went to see the doctor. He sent me to a specialist, who sent me to getan M.R.I. scan on my knee to see what damage had been caused. I got the scan results back and went to see the specialist about it. He said that there was signs of wear and tear on my cartilage in my knee, but other than that it was alright. He said that it was not bad enough to be operated on, and in order to keep it as good as possible, I should stop playing squash, the only sporty I really love. He suggested I take up swimming instead, as it is less stressful on the knee. I was very sad, because not only am I crap at swimming, but I am only a teenager, and retiring from my favourite sport is not something I want to do until I'm old and possibly grey-haired and wrinkled.
I'm feeling slightly depressed about that, but to top it off, I caught a spyware on my PC, and had to format it. I somehow managed to salvage my AGS stuff and My Documents but that is all.

Now I am finished telling my tale, and whatever you do, whether it be weep or laugh, I would like to have any support given.

Thank-you. :'(

If this only happen two months ago, it doesn't strike me as extra-ordinary worrying. One of my closest friends had to give up soccer permanently (due to some muscle inflamation which had to be operated) when he was about 12, and he was very promising at that time.
Another friend has had his arm in a cast since he broke some tiny bone in his wrist some eight months ago.
Shit happens.

True story:

When I was 17 years old, I had developed a passion for ping-pong. Not for championship reasons of course, but I was getting pretty good, at my town... (not Athens at the time).
Anyway, due to my fast reflexes (!!!!!), I manged to break my knee! Yes! I broke my knee while playing the most peacefull of all sports! Not to mention that I still have (and it's been 11 years), a small problem in my left knee, but nothing serious I must say.

I was never an athletic type of guy, and now the only running I do is to chase my son...

About your PC: I haven't had a problem this year, but being an intelligent (rather stupuid, I must say, you'll see why), after a years work on my studio computer, I haven't done a single backup. This is due to the large (size-wise) nature of music. I mean a poject can very well be 1.5 Gb, and I don't have DVD writter. Stupid, right!

I am slowly getting there, but it's going to take some time still, and I have done a lot of work indeed this year...

In the past I have formatted a lot of times my hard drive, and although it takes a day or two to get it back on track and running, it is always better than before, cause I erase any previous stuff I didn't want, and since the only things you would like to keep are your AGS project and your documents, I say you're fine. Time to restore you hard drive and to make it even better running. Time consuming, but think the bright side.

On the knee accident: Well, that is really unfortunate, but unless you are going for it professionally, I can only say that you will find other stuff to do. And honestly, me being from Greece, sea is perfect! Do some swimming lessons in your country and in the Summer come to Greece. You'll see life with a different eye! Really!

A good pair of sport-shoes (perhaps with "air-cushion" technology), along with some nice in-soles, may help you to take some stress off the knees and maybe can allow you to continue to play squash. Ã, Work regular stretching into daily life, and the muscles and joints can become stronger and more flexible. Ã, Some types of vitimin suppliments may help to strengthen the joints as well, perhaps some multi-vitamins that may have calcium and iron enrichment, and some other herbal suppliments, such as Glucosamine and Lingzi, may help in strengthening the joints as well other health benefits.
Ã,  Ã, But if your injury has been long-going, you may need to take a bit of a "lay-off" for a couple of weeks or so from strenuous activity that would put hard stress on the knee joint. Ã,  I think because you're still young, healthy and active, that perhaps giving your body a little rest may just be the thing you need to allow the injury a proper chance to heal. Ã, As much as it's hard to stay away from an activity that you enjoy, once in a while it's good to give the body a rest for a week or two.
Ã,  Once you allow the injury a chance to better heal, when you start back into your activitiy such as squash, you may need to "ease into it", I mean, maybe for the first while back at it, don't go as hard at it, take a more relaxed approach to your game. Ã,  Try and listen to your body, and you will start to know the limits of what you can do.. if your feeling good at that point and without feeling pain, then you could push yourself a bit harder.

Ã,  As far as SpyWare, I suggest getting Ad-Aware's anti-spyware program for scanning the computer. You can get a free version at: http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
Ã, For protecting your computer against spyware before it gets installed, I also suggest using "Spyware Blaster", which is a free program you can download over at:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Spybot Seach and Destroy is also a good (and free) utitlity for protecting against Spyware. The "Tea-Timer" option is quite valuable and protects real-time against spyware trying to install itself or other programs that may attempt to make registry changes without your knowledge:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Ã, If you need a good Firewall, a good (and free) one that I use is Sygate Personal Firewall. You can download from here:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/sygatefw.html

If you need a good free anti-virus program, I might suggest "Anti-Vir", you can get at:
http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html

Ã,  You Ã, may not yet have to give up on something you enjoy to do, but, you may have to change a bit how you approach doing it. Ã, Best regards.

Seriously though, i hope things get better for you. ...also, this has made me aware of the dangers of spyware... got one scanning for bots now... (Thanks Barbarian!)

hey, man, thats bad luck.
all i can say is, try to excercies ure leg muscles, and sooner than later, when they're much stronger, ull be able to play again.
i know a guy who werent allowed to play rugby anymore, since he tore some sort of ligament somewher ein his leg, but he decided to make his upper legs stronger and stronger via the gym, and he was able to play again.

That's a shame... but what the doctors tell you?  Bullshit.  Absolutely.

My oldest brother, Alexander, was born early without his throat connected to his stomach.  The doctors messed up the surgery so many times, it would take a small book to tell of it.  He lived through it, and they said he could never play an instrument, do any sports, or any kind of running.  He's now studying law in St. Johns, and:
-takes me to go swimming a few times a week
-runs laps around the block every summer
-and plays the trumpet for the school pep band.

Don't listen to them.  You'll be fine!

The knee makes the leg move back on forth. If, by accident, you make it go right and then left (which is normally impossible), you break it. Simple.

I actually touched the table with my knee and I tried to go back uncounsiously. But I was not facing the table but had 90 degrees with the table. The leg was stuck, somehow (have no idea how), but the body kept going. So I broke my knee...

Generally now, I take care, and be carefull even when playing chess.

Thanks to every-one who has shown their support, and even a few who haven't shown it but still support me.

The thing about it appening two months ago is that it still hurts as bad as it did when it happened. Also, I am trying to be modest, but I'm actually close to making the state team to play against the rest of the nation. I did make the regional to play against the rest of the state.

I just think that having to reinstall everything is a bit annoying, and especially with some things that I don't have the program or cd-key anymore. It is true, though that everything will run better this way after a bit of time.
BTW I was looking at possibly going for it professionally, but this kind of blows that out of the water. I really would love to visit Greece sometime, but maybe not strictly for swimming. I am really crap (no, seriously crap!) at swimming, so that is going to be hard.

I went to see a physiotherapist and she gave me some stretches to keep my knee strong. The muscles around it had wasted a bit from me not using it a lot.
I am currently taking Glucosamine in the hope that it works.

I actually took the scan results summary over to the physio and she told me to get a second opinion. In January I'm going to go and see the same doctor who operated on my big brother's knees and ask him what we should do.
Also, your brother sounds like the kind of person who I would respect heaps. I have a friend with cerebal palsy (sp?) and people who say he's a retard get what's coming to them.

Once again, thank-you everyone. I'll just have to live it as I go and see what happens.

It's not necessarily bad.  It's just Windows registry's option of whether or not you want to be notified if the firewall or anti-virus is disabled.  People shut it off usually due to annoyance (and Windows' frequent bloody-mindedness).  However, the dword 0 means that the notification is not disabled, so all is kosher.  In either case, it's not frequent that spyware would manipulate that, but it's not a bad precaution for the scanning software to take.
