Something fishy is going on with my connection.

For the past week or two weeks, I'm not entirely sure, my internet connection has been acting weird. Here's the problem:
When I'm trying to send stuff over IRC or MSN, everything goes fine for a while, then the upload rate slows down and stops. Sometimes my internet connection dies at the same time. It takes a couple of minutes until the internet works again. However, when I try to upload stuff onto my webspace, everything works fine. Also, I'm having no problems with downloading or receiving stuff. If I try to send a small file, like a midi or small picture, it goes fine because, as I mentioned earlier, the upload rate starts slowing down only after I've been sending stuff for a while.

I'm not entirely sure what I did before the problem occured. I think I might have updated my firewall (Zone Alarm) to a newer version, along with Ad-Aware, Spybot and Antivir Personal. I think I might have downloaded some security patches from Windows Update, too, but I'm not sure. I'm using Windows XP with service pack 1 installed.

Help would be muchly appreciated, thankies.

ISP throttling upload to foreign servers? Try sending to someone in Finland and see if the problem persists.

Apparently it doesn't help. I've been trying to send stuff to my friend who lives in the same town as me, with no luck. And I've tried to send stuff to 'foreigners' as well, but it hasn't worked either.

I used to have terrible cable connections. About 1/3 of the time my internet didn't work and half of the time if would cut out every 10 minutes then come back on. About 5 different guys from the cable company came over about 20 times. They had no idea why it was doing this, and tried dozens of theroies. Eventally they laid a new cable source line and we haven't had problems since.

call your isp

I had the same problem earlier this year :P
Maybe not exactly the same but anyway...

I had a problem that was similar to that, not sure if this is your cure though. Have you moved the computer to a different room lately? I moved my computer to the other side of the house and hooked the modem into the cable outlet there. It worked fine, or so I thought. Every 30-60 minutes it would just stop working. Then I put the modem back where it was and ran a cat 5 cable into the room the computer now sits in and it worked. Next step I rewired the basement with new higher grade cable from the box with only one split before the modem the other side of the splitter then goes off to the rest of the house for the T.V.'s . Works great now. Like I said it might not be your problem but it is something to keep in mind for everyone. Cable modems are very picky.

What's your ISP? It might be just them. Calling them should help. I hear Sonera is tricky. It was for us 'bout 2 years ago when we got broadband, but nowdays it works fine. Sometimes, very rarely, my connection dies for like a few seconds, sometime before midnight, might be only because it's crowded in the network or something...
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

I haven't been moving my computer... the problem just started all of a sudden.

Ishmael: Yeah, I have Sonera ADSL. I heard the connection speed were doubled sometime ago, and I've noticed my downloads going twice as fast as earlier. Maybe they have screwed up something while fiddling around with the connections. Dunno, but if the problem still occurs after a week, I guess I have to call Sonera. *sigh*

It did double. I have ADSL modem connection indicator on the system tray, if I hover the mouse over it it tells the line speed. Mine is now 2Mb/512Kb, but no problems have occured. What kind of modem and such you have? It might have something to do with the firewall too... I was a year behind a strict firewall, and uploads and downloads through MSN went real slowly and didn't go at all through IRC...
