All I can say is: Hell yeah!

I'm not a Mac guy at all -yet-(don't even have an iPod :-[), but I gotta tell ya, I'm looking at the keynote now, and I definitely want one of those. It is phenomenal. Revolutionary. I thought that fake promo video looked great, but the real thing just blows it out of the water.

Wtf?!

Thats... Just wonderful!  :o

I actually thought of buying a new iPod today.. Maybe this is a better choice? :P
Daamn...

Sam.

not out till the summer though. This is becoming an irritating habit of Apple, who used to enjoy the phrase "shipping now!" so much.
Bye bye thankyou I love you.

vict0r

Ouch... I'll just stick to my bulky, laggy iPod mini for some time to come then...
And I wouldn't actually call it a phone, as it runs Mac OSX, 8 gig hd, wireless network, 2mp cam, fits in iPod docking stations and has a normal earphone jack plug! It's more like a PDA with alot of functions, rather than a phone..

Yay! More over-priced technology that will break after a year. Sign me up! (not)

Also, I find this interesting:

QuoteThis device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.

This bascially translates to "We haven't actually made anything other than a prototype, so don't get your panties in a twist just yet. We may not actually release this for 3 years"
You. Me. Denny's.

The technology seems somewhat decent. Only thing to be wary of is Apple's sole partner will be Cingular (a unit of AT&T) in a multi-year agreement. No other company will be able to sell plans with the iPhone until 2009-2010. And, from what I've heard from others, Cingular is crap.

You can see slides from the presentation here:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/the-apple-iphone/

It looks nice, it sounds interesting, but Im not sure its worth the price. Its battery life isn't great and I'm not totally sure on touchscreen control on a mobile phone. And although I can't find the slide now, my friend said it only had a 2 meg camera, which isn't very impressive for a "media" phone.

I'm sure it'll be another fad though.

Becky

I already have a phone that calls people, a camera and an mp3 player.  I dont understand these media phones at all.

It does look kinda cute though, and I'm sure people will buy it because it has an i in front of it.

Mmh... decent technology...

I have always waited for something like that to come out - I mean, it has only ONE key! Finally we won't have to type all those numbers on a normal handy "keyboard" anymore but can "control everything with our fingers"! That sure is a great progress towards old thumb-controlled handies! Wait... handy... that thing originally had a purpose or something. What was that... calling people? Nooo, impossible, in that case the i"Phone" surely would have keys with numbers on them! The purpose of mobile phones sure was downloading "funny" movies for high prices from the apple database! Not to mention all the jamba ringtones we can buy with that in no time! And ooooh, pointing in a direction with our fingers is far more accurate than scrolling through a menu, especially in a crowded place! Voice control, anyone??

*cough cough cough*

DISCLAIMER: That was meant satirical. And I don't have anything against Apple in general, I just don't dig the idea of this lookie-what-my-4000-â,¬-handy-can-do stuff. In fact, I used a handy without even a display for years. Today, I'm quite happy with my trusty old SIEMENS ME 45 that doesn't even have working internet acces nor a color display. Oh, and  my MP3 player consits of
* Volume Control
* Play
* Power
* Next/Last Track.

It cost me about 15â,¬ (should be about 20$ or so) and I'm quite happy with it.

/EDIT: Wait, how do you make this iPhone call numbers not in any list of yours?  ???

vict0r

Err... You type them.. When needed, you get a keyboard to write on, on-screen. Just like a regular phone, with the ability to hide the keyboard when its useless. Wonders of touch screen... :P :)

I do have a cell phone used for calling and messaging, I have an mp3 player(although almost not working :P), and I have a laptop. The only reason I would buy it, is because it looks like a nifty gadget. I don't have any particular need for it, but it looks like a great gadget.. I like gadgets..

Same in my country. Only a different company tho, but really crappy.. Most likely people will crack the operator lock, and we can use our telephone company of our choice. It is being done with normal phones today, and it's perfectly legal.

ManicMatt

I want a new phone, as my once top of the range phone is old hat now, and the camera quality is crap. I also want a new mp3 player, as mine is only 256mb. (Intentionally got that as at the time it was possible to get nicked where I worked so I didn't want to buy an expensive one)

So you'd think this was ideal for me!

However, I never want an ipod simply because of all that copy protection crap! I like the fact I can stick my current mp3 player in any USB port and transfer the songs over.

And WHITE headphones, what are you people thinking.. "Hey! I have white headphones, so I probably have an ipod, come and rob me!"

Yes, I said headphones. No, I don't care.

vict0r

Quotebecause of all that copy protection crap

I would have thought that you as a musician would have more understanding for these people ;)

Becky

If you want to take nice pictures, get a digital camera, not a new phone :P

That's because if they submitted it to the FCC already, it would have announced it for them, and they wanted to announce it themselves with all that snazzy showbizz. Or something. I don't know the details but that's what I heard. Jobs did say it was prerelease though. Some of those widgets were even just jpg placeholders.

And you're right, it may not be practical on all fronts, but you gotta remember it's something totally new. It's a new incarnation of the PDA, Jobs said they have patented hundreds of technologies in there, so it's not gonna be perfect right away. Sure I don't really need half of that stuff, but it sure is exciting. And it's all in one device.

I have my reasons.

dasjoe

    * No 3G. We know you know, but still, it hurts man.
    * No over the air iTunes Store downloads or WiFi syncing to your host machine.
    * No expandable memory.
    * No removable battery.
    * No Exchange or Office support.

well, i'll stick to nokia and sony :)
... it's quite easy being the best.

Sam.

IM not going to defen the iPhone, because I think it was a mistake to blur all the products into one, over priced product. However, i object to this anti ipod stuff. I know that iPods aren't everyone's favorite mp3 player, and there ARE some better ones out there for multifunctionality and the like. But complaints about battery life, and ipods breaking after a year are unfounded. I have had my newest ipod for over a year, and it is still going strong. A friend of mine has an ORIGINAL ipod, and it still works fine. I sold my old ipod to spleen, as as far as i know, it works fine. So dislike iPod if you want, but don't mark it down with things that aren't facts, thats just silly.

PS. The iPhone looks great, but will be as worthless as the sony walkman phones have proved to be, phones should be phones and mp3 should be mp3s. UNtil they can combine them nicer, they shouldnt bother. This is a step in the right direction though.

Bye.
Bye bye thankyou I love you.

I'm with Zoot here! I've actually had my iPod mini for... I think just two years now! And although bulky (there are actual physical bulks in it from dropping it in the floor and on the grounds etc) and lag once in a while, it never once let me considerably down! So I would say that people who say that iPods in general have a very short life, should really check their facts.

QuoteThis is a step in the right direction though.

Yeah.. First to my knowledge that actually have a minijack output. I might be wrong tho..?
