Title: Is this a virus or is my AV overreacting?
Post by: passer-by on Fri 02/06/2006 19:37:02

Hi

This happens only with the AGS forums when I try to open a board and only in IE. I've tried a couple of other forums and now  I'm using Netscape to post this.
When I tried to skip it said IE can't open the page anyway.

Not a virus per se and nothing to do with the AGS forums, but this looks like a malware browser hijack to me. That, of course, is why you shouldn't be using internet explorer, and should stick with Netscape or Firefox or Opera.

To get rid of junk like this, google for Ad-Aware, that'd probably zap it.

I do run Lavasoft at the moment. Funny thing is I run a full scan a couple of hours ago.

I don't know why it affected my AGS page, that's why I tried to read some other forums before I posted.

It could also be what's called a "false positive" (it happens from time to time).Ã,  Your anti virus program might "think" that there's a potential virus when everything might be okay. Don't know in this case what might be setting off the warning. It might actually be a virus / spyware / adware / malware on your system that you don't know of or has been able to sneakily hide from your security programs thus far.

You might also consider trying "Trend Micro - Free online virus scan" (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/), which has a good reputation.

If you still are stuck with the problem later, perhaps try running a HijackThis (http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html) scan and post up the results (or PM it to me) and I might be able to tell if you have any "nasties" lurking on your system.

YOu can try SpyBot. It has a nice immunize feature too that will block things from coming back.

OK, run two full AV scans, Spybot, CCleaner, Lavasoft and a couple of other application, emptied cookies and temp files but I'm still having the problem.
