... they decide to release a new OS!
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200408/s1187204.htm
They do it every few years somehow or another.. I'm surprised at how long XP has lasted (and will continue to last until 2006). I guess they're going with the rate of PC development.
A recap since 95..
95, 98, Me (1999), 2000, XP [and somewhere in there there's NT]
I mean, look at that.. for three years they released an OS each year, albeit only slightly modified.
""We've had to make some trade-offs to deliver the features corporate customers, consumers and OEMs are asking for in a reasonable time frame," said Jim Allchin, group vice president of the Platforms Group at Microsoft."
Ahhhh yes... Trade offs are a good thing! Can't wait!

And somehow, it seems perfect that he was so quick to add this:
Quote"Our long-term vision for the Windows platform remains the same."
I know the local pirats are selling Longhorn beta...
That is like, old news?
Nevermind, more system crashing after a year of using their OS!
C.
has anyone got any screenshots of this longhorn thingy? Is it going to be like a 95 to 98 thing where it looks basically the same but works slightly different?
A few Sneak Peek screenshots of Longhorn over here:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/longhorn_4029.asp
and here:

Do a Google for "Windows Longhorn Screenshots" and you'll find tons more.
Doesn't really look so different than XP overall, but does have some new features/thingys added too that look a bit different as well.
The design of the toolbars makes me want to puke.. They damned well better have a "Turn the annoying resource hogging "features" off" button.
And what the HELL is up with some of the title bars? The title bar is blank and instead the title is in the window itself.
Longhorn? Seriously, they named the OS Longhorn? I believe this is some sort of joke and refuse to believe it exists until my dad buys four copies and makes me install one on my computer.
Pesty: Longhorn is the codename of the new OS. It'll probably be changed to "Windows: XP 06" or "Windows: FU" or some other random abbriviation by the time it's released.
This page lists all the Windows products and their codenames: http://www.phm.lu/Documentation/Windows/Codenames.asp
Windows 3.1 = Windows Janus
Windows 95 = Windows Chicago
Etc...

They need more creative people working at Microsoft.
Isn't this supposed to be the release where they change how the file system works, thereby ruining everything?
I read that somewhere, so it must be true.

If you read the article, they decided not to impliment the WinFS.
I read somewhere that they're getting rid of the icon basedness or something... like the whole OS becoming a damn big start menu???
Microsoft is going way too far here... I'll stick to 98 as long as the cd is intact.
I think people should stop "reading somewhere" and just wait for the thing.
I read somewhere that Eric is such a wise-guy
It must be true if you read it somewhere!
That Eric is going way too far here... I'll stick to Feurstein 98 as long as the cartridge is intact.
Man, I remember waiting for Windows Chicago...
I read somewhere that there used to be a time when people were grateful for upgrades....
I always thought it was a myth.
...and I remember it was a Finnish computer magazine... but it was like a long time ago... it had screenshots there too. No icons on the desktop to be seen...
... I remember watching a newstory in 1995 where they showed the first person in the world to buy Windows 95 (some kid in New Zealand who waited at the door till midnight)... I always imagine him rushing to his 486 and trying to install it, and then the very next day going "bleh, this windows 95 is a piece of crap!"...Ã, ;D
I'm glad Microsoft is getting around to fixing XP, because thats pretty much what it is. The "features" look nice, but the title bars make me want to vomit, along with Sylpher.
I just disable themes.. Saves 12 MB of RAM and looks cleaner..
TEH GR4D3INT5!!!
What's up with that?
A beta version being sold on the black market, eh?
What could possibly be worse? I mean, windows with all it's current bugs in non-beta stage ... then Windows bound to have 10x more bugs in Beta-Stage!
It's actually still Alpha...
