Title: kookaburras
Post by: sportyjay on Mon 12/12/2005 09:13:31
The kookaburras rarely get mentioned anywhere yet they are just like the socceroos. The socceroos didn't make the world cup for ages and the kookaburras hadn't won a gold medal in ages and the they both finally did yet the socceroos had much bigger celebration and they only qualified unlike the kookaburras who actually won the gold medal. There was a lot of talk about the socceroos qualifying being Australia's greatest sporting moment, that is ridiculus. I wonder what Australia's greatest sporting moment would actually be. Any Ideas?
Jamie Dywer is unbelievable he scored something like 12 goals for australia in the Olympics and just the other day he got 2 out of the 4 goals Australia scored to beat the Netherlands.
BTW I do not play hockey and never have.

I played Hockey as a kid, played representitive, got close to making NSW, probably would have if I kept playing, but gave it away towards the end of school, to be honest I don't really care too much about it anymore.

The womens team just lost in a penalty shoot out at the recent world championships final against the Netherlands, I watched the game, I can say that there were quite a few attractive women in both sides, and those short skirts, well it was good to watch.

This forum is international, so not many people will really know much about this topic, or care

I play cricket these days, and yes, Kookaburra bats are great

Australia's greatest sporting moment, well, that's pretty tough, cause there have been so many, we did hold the Cricket & Rugby World Cups at the same time, the women's hockey team were world champs for many years.

I agree, making the world cup is no where near any highlight, a good achievement, but only winning the World Cup could come close, and that wont be for quite a few years.

My favourite sporting moment was when Steve Waugh took a catch running backwards behind the side screen on the boundary almost colliding with Merv Hughes

I reckon one of Australia's greatest sporting moments was indeed when Jamie Dwyer scored the winning goal for the Kookaburras at the Olymics. Almost brought a tear to my eye, and watching it still gives me shivers up my spine.

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree.
Merry, merry king of the bush is he.
Laugh, Kookaburra!  Laugh, Kookaburra!
Gay your life must be.

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree.
Eating all the gum drops he can see.
Stop, Kookaburra!  Stop, Kookaburra!
Leave some there for me!

What is a kookaburra? Despite knowing that song (somewhat), I have no idea.

I think, after reading the song, that the kookaburra is the australian word for a person who looks for chewing gums in the trees. Maybe an early version of an oompa loompa. And in this case, a gay one!

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Hitting all the monkeys he can see
Stop, Kookaburra! Stop, Kookaburra!
That's not a monkey that's me.

Kookaburra sits on the electric wire
Tears in his eyes cause his tail's on fire
Ouch, Kookaburra! Ouch, Kookaburra
Hot your tail must be.

I don't think those are official verses, but I enjoy them quite thoroughly.

Speaking of Kookaburra's, they have a pretty famous sound, and I've noticed them in a few movies before, and the strangest one is at the Start of "Raiders of the Lost Ark"

When they're in the jungle in South America in the intro, It's a bird sound that is meant to be really creepy, the funny thing is, if you knew Kookaburra's you wouldn't be too freaked out (unless you were a Worm, Lizard or Fish)

They're also used for the same effect in "The Wizard of Oz"

They're a pretty common bird, I hear them every day
