Title: Land of the Dead
Post by: LGM on Fri 24/06/2005 19:20:47
*WARNING* Uncut trailer (http://www.lotdunseen.com/#)

Well folks, I'm suprised no-one has mentioned this earlier, but George Romero is finally bringing an end to the Dead series with his latest film, Land of the Dead.

The zombies are getting smarter (and smellier) and have taken over the world. A group of survivors have barricaded themselves in behind a large wall and take their last stand against the horde.

This looks friggin' awesome. Dennis Hopper and John Leguizamo are in it, which are two actors I first discovered in Super Mario Bros (a better move than everyone says)

Anyway, I'm seeing this movie tonight in a new theater they built over in Illinois. Supposed to have awesome seats and killer sound. I can't wait!

Awesome.
I don't know if they're going to show it here or what, I'll probably pirate it before seeing it in the cinema anyway. :P

In other Romero news, there's this (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/cityofthedead/index.html).

Edit:
Slightly unrelated, BUT.
For those zombie fans who happen to like comics, get this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1582403589/104-8416958-9879903?v=glance).
It's quite awesome, up to issue #7 or so, though.
Then the original artist left and the story started going downhill a bit.
But this volume rocks. Very much so.

Oh I'm going to have to see that one. Ã, I don't know what it is, but ever since I was a little kid, zombie's really freak me out. Ã, A movie could be the cheesiest, most horribly made movie on the planet, but if it has zombies, it will still give me nightmares! Ã, I'm such a nerd.

I love zombie films, especially by George A. Romero. I'll probably end up going to see this sometime next week. I've still got Batman Begins to see this weekend.

Is this the story of a dead travel agent and his four-year journey through the underworld?

I'm excited about this, I just got my hands on Dawn of the Dead and it's such a good movie.  You gotta give him credit for keeping with the theme.

I just got back, and all I have to say is "Wow"

And that wow is by all means the most positive "wow" that will ever seep from my vocal openings.

Not only does George Romero bring back everything we loved in his old movies, he finally gets to fufill his real vision with a big budget and lots of zombie mayhem. This is the movie Day of the Dead was supposed to be.

The performances are real tight, and the SFX are flipping outstanding. There's only one CG zombie and 4-5 shots of digital blood and guts. The rest is traditional, and Tom Savini even makes an appearance.

I won't say much more, just that if you are fan of zombie movies you CAN'T miss this one. It also has a nice social commentary that is present in all of the Dead films.

But I must complain about something.. There were about four teeny-bopper girls behind me that would not shut up the entire movie. "That's disgusting!" "Gross" "Who's that guy?" I wanted to turn around and bitch slap them. The only reason they were there was because they were probably planning on sleeping with their boyfriends after. Or some slutty crap like that.

LGM, can I not take my slutty girlfriends out to a movie without you bickering? Sheesh.

Actually, it looks really good. It's the first tralier I've ever seen on tv that I've actually been sort of grossed out. And I'm not easily grossed out. Most of the stuff they eat on Fear Factor we eat in my house all the time.

Watch the uncut trailer I linked to to REALLY be grossed out. This movie has it all. And knowing Romero, there will be an unrated version on DVD most definitely with MORE gore.

I want to go see it so bad, but I can't seem to find a date, or someone to go with me (all my friends think my obsession with zombies is stupid, and apparently girls do too).  It looks to be a good flic.  I've been waiting for this one for so long.  I'm not even sure if any of the theaters around here will be showing it; they didn't have either of the Resident Evil movies, and they didn't have the Dawn of the Dead remake.  I guess I'll have to wait and see, but I really frown on the thought of having to wait for this one to come out on DVD.  It's also a sad thought, to me, that this could be the LAST Dead movie.  I say Romero should just keep making them (a new one every 10-20 years) until he dies, just to keep guys like me happy, because their just aren't enough new zombie flics coming out.

I also have some Romero-related news, a little off-topic, but George Romero and Tom Savini have been involved in making a game for the Xbox, PS2, and PC called "City Of The Dead".  It's a first-person shooter, and it takes place in a city full of zombies (hence the title).  I don't know if it ties in with the movies (I'm assuming it must in some way).  I first read about it in some game magazine, I still have it at home.  Some of the weapons are a little unrealistic, like a "void-bomb" (it sucks all of the zombies within it's range into a black hole and then explodes).  Here's a link: http://ps2.gamespy.com/playstation-2/the-living-dead-george-romero-project/618416p1.html  If you want to find out more, there are more sites, just go to google and type in "Romero City of the Dead Savini"...etc.

I'm sorry, Gal.Ã,  I only read your post, I don't always click through all of the links posted, though.

I don't know why Homepage Of The Dead (http://www.homepageofthedead.com) doesn't feature it, though...

I'm looking forward to the game.  The ability to play with a friend, have them potentially turn into a zombie and then having to make the same choice they face in just about every zombie movie..  that kicks so much ass.  Romero's rant about the game is 99% pure niftiness (-1% for the stupid weapons, like "void bombs").

As for the movie.. I loved it.  Unfortunately, I was running late and missed the first 5 minutes but it was pretty spectacular as far as zombie movies go.  Dennis Hopper made an excellent overlord sort-of-person, and the environment was very fleshed out.  No real explanation as to how, but it's a fairly believable post-apocalyptic society.  It follows Dawn of the Dead quite nicely.  My only real disappointment was with the ending.. I thought it fell a little bit flat and much preferred DOD's ending.  Regardless..  I'd give it a 9/10 for zombie flickishness.

You didn't miss much in the first five minutes..

Spoiler
It was a quick flash opening with stock footage, explaining what happened to the world. Then it showed the riley guy and the scavenegers beginning to scavange the town and noticing that the zombies were trying to live their lives again. We're introduced to all the "character" zombies and see that fireworks are a distraction to them.

I actually caught a bit of that..  I walked in when the intro credits were just about over.  I actually don't see it as that much of a downer.  It gives me a reason to re-watch it later.  Same thing happened with Dawn of the Dead, my sister made me 10 minutes late so I missed most of the first scene with the boyfriend turning on one of the main characters.  I dig campy horror movies and zombie movies in particular.  Now that some of them are starting to have large budgets and attract real actors, it's only gotten cooler, with less cheesy distractions from the goings-on.   This might be a good time to warn potential movie-goers that LoD is pretty damned gory with many cringe-worthy scenes.  If you've got a weak stomach or are sensitive to this sort of thing, keep in mind that this one's roughly 2-3 times as brutal as Dawn.  I didn't have enough notice before seeing it.. I wanted to geek-out and go wearing zombie-styled clothes or a homemade "Zombie in the making" t-shirt.

One other bit.  I'm curious about your thoughts, LGM:
Spoiler
This was one of the few zombie movies (especially as of late) with a zombie protagonist..  I couldn't help but cheer on the service-station zombie.  He and several of the "more evolved" zombies just friggin' rocked

Yes, Yak.. I absoulutely LOVED that bit. I thought it was very good writing and made the zombies seem less monstrous. You wanted to root for them, yet at the same time you're completely scared of them.

Dyam. I still haven't seen this movie yet, but of all the 'of the dead' movies I've seen, I've liked - even the Return of the Living Dead 3 - which was bad, but interesting...

Perhaps it's the nihilist in me that loves these movies so much. But here is a freaky related article: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,15739502-13762,00.html

This should fuel zombie movies for the next few decades! Perhaps even real life zombie scares! Science is awesome.

Oh man, that is quite intriguing. Doesn't sound like it could ever cause an epidemic, though.

That's what all the scientists say at the beginning of the movie...and then someone gets bit by a zombie dog. Next thing you know, Kennel of the DEAD!!
