One of the biggest things holding me back in this respect is my dependency on friends. I know that may sound incredibly lame but it's hard for me to make friends that I can really connect with, and without that connection my entire life just goes to hell.

Sure, it's hard to make friends once you've left school, but that's no reason to hold your life back by living in the same place forever. It's not like you'll never see them again if you move away to get a better job -- you can still visit them and they can visit you.

If I had stayed living with my parents in their home town, I'd probably still be in the same situation as you, not really knowing what to do since there were no jobs that I wanted in the area. But sooner or later you have to make a choice about what you want to do, and if there's a job that you think you'd enjoy doing then why not just go for it and see what happens?

I only have one (real-life) friend that I'm actually anywhere near close to at the moment and he seems completely against moving out of this hell-hole known as "Tejas".

And you're right EldKatt, I don't have any kind of excessive amounts of money really. There's not really a problem. I think I narrowed it down last night when I finally realized that the scariest part of all this is thinking back on all the money I earned last year and how frivolously I spent so very much of it.

I'll shortly be moving in with my "one friend", his brother, and his sister-in-law and we'll all be splitting the expenses. If I continue working at least around 50-60 hours a week (which actually at this point seems quite breezy; I could take a vacation working so few hours a week! :P) then I should be able to pay off rent, auto insurance, gasoline expenses, food, and still have money to spare for frivolous spending, or for saving.

I'm not saying I want to just stay where I'm at in life forever and just work a dead-end job for the rest of my life. I guess I'm just trying to sort out what I really want my next move to be.

I understand that even if I move away for a better job I can still see my friends again, but the two places I've really considered are thousands of miles away from friends and family. Certainly a daunting prospect.

Perhaps I'm just weak in this respect. But soon I'll be getting out of my parents' home and finally getting to understand the true meaning of the saying "wait until you move out". :=

BTW, that was more than a year ago Ben. And I don't regret it for a second. Just to let her know what she meant to me, it was worth it. As for "Phone Girl From Work"...I'm interested but I'm not buying the phone to try and spark her interest in me. I just like to do nice things for pretty girls. ;D

As for the "problem" of "excessive" money, I found one way of solving that problem...

Ahem. Seems like the majority of replies are not getting through here... you're not awesomely rich, you'll need that money once you're not living with your parents--you don't have excessive money, and there is no problem. Or am I missing something?

I've been trying to tell him that... ::)

Hey man, it's cool, I'm not saying you shouldn't do nice things for pretty girls. Doing nice things for pretty girls is great. I'm saying it costs lots of money, and when you do nice things, you like to make a real statement. Such as $100 valentine's gifts (which is easy to do if you're an executive, not so easy when you're a teenager) or a $250 telephone.

And hey - it's cool that you're doing it for the girl, I guess. It would be a shame if she took it the wrong way and stopped talking to you or something, is all. But - at least if YOU buy the phone, you'll get her number without having to ask her for it.  :=

EldKatt

DISAGREE!

If someone I barely knew gave me a gift like that, I would merely get suspicious. I would consider it very strange, I would tell me friends about it, and they would also consider it very strange. She will take it the wrong way (whatever that is). At least she would in any sort of reality I'm familiar with.

MashPotato

I agree with Eldkatt here.  I'm no longer a teenage girl, but if someone I didn't know wanted to give me a 250$ phone, not only would I not accept it, I would be extremely uncomfortable around said person afterward.  You may just be trying to be nice, but if you're planning on working there for some time, this has a good chance of making the working environment an awkward one.

This is none of my business I suppose, but just keep in mind what the possible consequences might be :)

I agree with both Mash and EldKatt.

She will instantly think you are trying to pick her up, guaranteed... and buying her a $250 phone will most probably make her think you're going to start stalking her and sending her flowers every day.

Sorry, but whether you're interested in her or not, I can't think how such a gesture could work out well, whatever your motivation. :S

Hell, if I bought a good friend something costing $250 I think they would be confused and uncomfortable. ;)

Well sheesh, you both work at a burger joint, buy her a new patty flipper cause the other one is too flimsy and she burns her hand.

Ok, no I'm just joking.

I agree with vict0r, but not in this situation. haha  That was funny.

That would actually be loads more funny, non-creepy and romantic, than an expensive cellphone. So don't do it, unless the girl is Paris Hilton, in which case she's bad news anyway :D.
