Title: Last.fm
Post by: Vel on Wed 01/11/2006 13:17:26
Some people here have been familiar with this for quite a while, while others are not in the know, so here goes...
Basically, www.last.fm is a database which writes down all the tracks you listen to, and then creates neat charts like this one:
(http://imagegen.last.fm/basic10/artists/VelBG.gif)  (http://www.last.fm/user/VelBG/?chartstyle=basic10)
It then uses these charts to find people with similar tastes to yours, you can listen to radio stations similar to your or anyone else's tastes and much much more. So try it out, and join the AGS group (http://www.last.fm/group/AGS) there.

I was there before Vel... I bet a lot of poeple were before me. THe only thing, it doesn't work on Quintessential player. Oh, and once you convert songs to mp3, do it lame, that way it will surely work.

EDIT: Lies a bit though the list, doesn't have my fav bands as I have them on cds, these are the ones from my computer. Oh, and I did this playlist challenge listenin through all the mp3s I have, so that's why...

I usually listen to my song list on random, and skip through the ones I'm not in the mood for currently. So far random is not random enough, and my PC/iPod seem to have collected a list of "favourites" which are all messed up. How exactly would one listen to huge collections of music except on random?

This sounds neet! I'm going to try this out! But can I play my music still with Winamp, or should I play it with last.fm player?

Post by: Vel on Wed 01/11/2006 14:08:23
You can play it with winamp or whatever common player you are using, it just installs the needed plugin.

Indeed I am familiar with it. Quite a handy tool when it comes to discovering new music, methinks.

I've been on last.fm for a while. It's cool to see what bands you listen to alot and which songs you play the most. When I joined, I was really into Marillions's album Marbles, so that dominates all my charts.

I decided to join, and I added the AGS group a week a few days ago and I'm still a "pending member"! Who runs that, Hajo? Tell them to add me already please!

There's a link under the chart staing "Put this on your website/blog". click it and you'll get the url.

Title: Re: Last.fm
Post by: Tuomas on Sun 05/11/2006 15:03:11
Oh oh, should be there when you listen to music and get it scrobbled and then log on to your account or what's it. If it's not there choose overview from the top and it should show everything.

Basically anyone can approve a new member, so I did that now, ManicMatt.

Post by: ManicMatt on Sun 05/11/2006 19:02:50
Ahh thankyou Vel!

Chicky, just to clarify what they said, make sure you've listened to enough music first otherwise it won't have enough data to make a chart.

Then what I did was click on "tools" and then the option is staring right at you.

Post by: Chicky on Sun 05/11/2006 21:13:27
thought that might be the problem, that's why i've listened to 8 albums today!
Title: Re: Last.fm
Post by: ManicMatt on Sun 05/11/2006 21:24:40
I hope it logged it! Bloody thing fucked up on me! All of my today's plays were lost I think! It was "scrobbling" them and then it had an "error" when I was listening to Thom Yorke.

So now I won't listen to what i did for a few weeks and it will make them seem unpopular with me, mis-representative!!!!  >:(

Oh it did work after all! I guess it was slow on the uptake. (Slower than usual)

and there was that error message, in my defence.

I'll go add ya Minimi, one good turn deserves another, or something like that.

EDIT: erh.. I can't find an "approve member" button or anything.

When you have no or bad connection it stores the information in the buffer and scrobbles the tracks when your connection improves.

You have to click 'show details' and then accept, Matt. I'll do that myself now actually.

Auhsor: hey, I'm a Marillion fan too, haven't listened to marbles yet, but Misplaced Childhood, Brave and Clutching at Straws are all great records. Especially the first, it's magnificent and just gets better with each listen.

Oh I see! Yeah the site has been slow at loading anyway today! I'm eager to blame NTL.. my web provider as they suck. (But it's cheaper for me!)

I always wonder why sometimes THIS website becomes awfully slow at coming up "waiting for www...." and then i go somewhere intense like myspace and it's super quick! What's that
all about, anyway? It can't be the amount of actual downloading info.. can it? A connection issue then? Would yee know, kind sir?

I don't know it works pretty fine for me... sometimes it's overloaded and it goes down for like, 15 minutes. That happens quite seldom, though.
Title: Re: Last.fm
Post by: Tuomas on Mon 06/11/2006 13:03:37
It's stuck very often. Sometimes the pages don't even load completely. My guess it has something to do with thousands of people sending information about scrobbled files at the same time-_-

Vel: Hey that's cool. I'm a pretty new Marillion fan, so I've been more into Marbles. I have listened to the older albums a bit, and I enjoy them. I think I'll listen to some tonight. I do really recommend Marbles though - I would put it in my top 5 albums. A lot of reviews I read say its a return to form after a string of slightly disappointing albums. Oh and there will be a new album coming out at the start of next year sometime.

And also, we need a logo for the group. I'm guessing a blue cup will suffice.

Auhsor, I haven't listened to post-fish marillion much, only afraid of sunlight and brave. I wasn't too impressed with the former, but the latter is almost as good as misplaced childhood, which I consider to be one of the very best conceptual albums of all time. I'll give marbles a listen soon, I think.

Since other people posted their weekly charts too, here's mine:
(http://imagegen.last.fm/basic10/artists/Tuomu.gif)  (http://www.last.fm/user/Tuomu/?chartstyle=basic10)

Yeah, I am out of my head.

Anyway, let's not turn this to a Marillion fanboy thread even though I do have their Fish-era albums and Season's End and Marbles and some random albums and one Fish solo album, and they're all awesome.

Ehm, Ok, I subscribed and download some kind of plugin where I can play music. While installing it, it downloaded some winamp plugin too, does that mean i can listen with winamp and it logs all my tracks to the Internet??? While listening to winamp, there is no extra window or plugin running, everyhting is as it was before... So whats the deal, it works only via browser?

I'm no photoshopper (I prefer to shop for food), but imagine this vague chuckle inducing joke:

Tiny Tim            6748
Hanson            2402
Fifty Cent         2101
Rancid                402
Sharon, Lois       402
and Bram
Hitler                    23

Oh, I'm so alsmost amusing.

And lazy.

@ radiowaves. I suggest you go to winamp, open options - preferences - plug-ins and there's the media library section where you should have the Winamp audioscrobbler, all you need to do is select that and press configure.

Bump!

Hey what the hell is that? Who's responsible of hanging this too low for bicyclers to ride under? I'm going to call the police to come and take it away!

Anyway, there hasn't really been new people joining lately, and I reckon some might have started using this meanwhile, so I'd remind, that we have our own hole int here.

Plus, I was starting another "playlist challenge" today, and I'd like to challenge everyone to beat me. The point is the add all your music files into one playlist and play it from the beginnign to the end with no shuffle and no skipping.

Personally I just reached 3600 files altogether, a bit over, but hey. So I thought 60 hours of music would be it again. Especially, when I usualyl just skip most tracks when they would deserve to be listened. So now i'm ensuring, that everyone and everything gets listened... to... Atm I'm playing Ace of Base, and the next thing in line seems to be After Crying, which is an interesting prog band from Hungary. Join me or fail!

Usually tagging it correctly and well helps a lot. That is, if your plugin is active. Everything should get scrobbled if they're correctly tagged. Winamp does this pretty well for you, with tha autotag function.

I mean if I hear it on Myspace or the ipod scrobbling software doesn't work or (happening a lot lately) my internet suddenly disconnects and doesn't tell me about it.
I ALWAYS tag things properly. Last.Fm has made me obsessive about that.

Haha, ok, well, about the computer disconnecting, Last.fm does have a rather nice cache, so basically everything you listen to should be scrobbled and sent to the website once you get back online again. About the others, well, afaik in only supports iTunes, Winamp and WMP, once you get the plugin... :(
