Title: Leslie Nielsen RIP
Post by: Mouth for war on Mon 29/11/2010 11:26:02
Ok I didn't know him of course but I must say I felt a little sad when I learned about his death. He died at the age of 84 from complications from pneumonia brought on while battling a staph infection. In my eyes he sure was the king of comedy. I mean...Frank Drebin...just thinking about that character makes me laugh :D I really must have a Naked gun marathon soon. R.I.P. LESLIE NIELSEN

you can read about it here if you want

I love Airplane, the Naked Gun Trilogy, and even the short lived Police Squad TV series.  Nielsen and the Zuckers created a new genre (the over-the-top parody) back in the day, and it may be the only movie genre where the originators really haven't been topped.

I recall Nielsen did a little known direct-to-VHS golf instruction video sometime in the 90s, which was good fun.

The reason why I personally mourn for certain celebrities is because it's sad to know that there is no chance we will ever see any of new work from the deceased, even if they hadn't worked in ages. This is one of those cases. :(

There must have been 30 Facebook posts (from my friends) that say "surely you can't be serious...". Funny how a man can impact so many. I, too, was saddened to hear of his passing. I was never a huge fan of The Naked Gun movies but Airplane is, to me, one of the most funny movies of all time.

So long Mr. Nielson...

The one thing I'll always remember about Leslie Nielsen is from a visit he made to Ireland to promote the second Naked Gun movie.

He agreed to appear on a children's TV program, and ended up staying for almost the entire three hour running time, making small talk with a puppet turkey and a "sock monster", between the regular cartoons and such. He quoted whole excerpts of dialog from his movies, agreed when the turkey said he thought Priscilla Presley was "hot", made fun of the sole human presenter, and generally looked like he was having a really good time.

The man had class.

I was thinking heavily, drinking beers, smoking cigarettes, using drugs, on where to waste my 5000th post, being the 7th AGS member to reach such post count in these forums.

So there I salute you Leslie Nielsen. God will be so happy to have you around all day. You made this world a little happier. I'm sad to see you go away, thanks for all the laughs, and man they were plenty!

A shame - I loved the naked gun movies.

Strange think - for some reason I was thinking about him this morning. Funny coincidence.

Yup, RIP  :'( ... Naked Gun = OMG...favourite spoof trilogy ever  :=

Enjoyed seeing him in Scary Movie 3 last night, as the President. LOL, the "President Ford" reference is a favourite movie moment of mine.. Airplane, classic - Spy Hard also very funny. Ahh man, f**k. I will sorely miss his presence in movies now. Hopefully someone will make a decent spoof with him as a CGI Terminator.

To a great man and a great set of films!

Time to break out the awesome drebin tracks by Ira I spose :D

He lived in Arizona at some point and did these terrible commercials for this local insurance company.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHqfh5wMbp0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHqfh5wMbp0)  The nation Shirley mourns for him.

Just learned that we also lost Irvan Kirshner (the director of The Empire iStrikes Back) at age 87.  This one hit me hard too ... Episode V is, in my opinion is the best of the Star Wars saga.

It goes in threes so we should probably expect another loss soon.

Just yesterday morning a friend on Facebook posted "RIP Lenny Woods", though I haven't the slightest clue who that is. Maybe he's the third?

Well, I don't know either, but because of the powerful Internet you can just answer yourself within seconds (http://jalopnik.com/5646242/former-drag-racer-commits-suicide-in-his-failed-car-dealership).

Ah thanks, I did google immediately but the only results I found were obituaries from 2004 and another from just a couple years ago.

Undoubtly the funniest actor ever to play in the parody genre. Even those dreadful family movies he starred in during the '90s rised to a higher level of entertainment whenever he entered the screen. I remember watching Safety Patrol, an extremely boring piece of junk. I only laughed twice, the two scenes with Leslie in it.

Rest in peace. Parody will never be the same again.

And surely I'm serious...

Like someone commented somewhere, comedy as we know it has died.

For some reason my favourite moment with Leslie goofing around is from Wrongfully Accused, where he is in a hospital trying to steal two large suction cups from some construction workers installing window panes.

Admittedly some movies he was in were just plain bad, but still he managed to be entertaining in them.

My dad has that, it -- as well -- is hilarious.

Although considered one of his 'worst' spoof-movie, Wrongfully Accused is one of my favourites. The first time I saw it, I lost my breath when he appeared in the river together with the fishes. So extremely unexpected and stupid that it almost suffocated me...

In some twisted coincidence, Airplane just came on TV a couple of days ago here in Finland. That was before I learned of his death (maybe even before his death?)

I always liked him in Early science fiction such as Forbidden Planet which was released the same year I was born.

Since he was an Arizona local I got to see him interviewed every so often and he'd usually bring a portable fart machine with him.  You can find videos on youtube of him pretending to fart during serious interviews and then pretending he didn't hear anything just to get a reaction.  He was one of those people who never grew up and had the good fortune not to have to.  It's just a shame his last movies were those horrible Bo Zenga films (Stan Helsing was so horrible... argh).  I think he was one of the most tragically under-utilized actors in Hollywood.

Prog, you live in Arizona?  So do I!  I posted the terrible Arizona Federal commercials he did earlier in this thread.  He had no shame when it came to his roles and that was one of the awesome things about him.
