Well, I've finally caved and purchased my own domain and hosting service (offered through sitesled!)
You can visit my site at http://www.lilgryphmaster.com or my blog at http://blog.lilgryphmaster.com
To celebrate this transfer, I realized that I need to do something new to my site. Right now there is 0 interactivity and it features alot of my old work.
What could I add to the site to make it more interesting, and what design changes could I make to spice it up.
If anyone would like to help design, feel free to step up. I want to make this a fun site that people will remember!
The problem is, with most sites you can't really add anything theme fitting with interaction.
A shoutbox would be useless and not fit in
a forum wouldn't really fit in (might work)
Browser games, unless made by you (I guess), wouldn't really fit
maybe joining or creating a webring might generate more traffic, and would at least fit
I did the damn title graphics, what more do you bloody want?
Also, google for "search engine optimisation".
Okay, folks. I have a semi-idea.. I was thinking, I've always wanted to run a joint-blog of some sort.
If I could get a few writers on board, we could start a blog about anything we wanted. Tech News, Movies, Games.. Maybe all of that. I think that would be fun. Don't argue that there are too many blogs that do that already, it doesn't matter.
There are hundreds of thousands of newspapers in the world, what's another news source?
We could be different by writing unique articles, or by just writing well-written articles... Instead of just "omg New FIrefox is OUT!"
I dunno.
Are there any other suggestions that I could incorporate into my site?
It's CRAP!
How's THAT for constructive critisism!?!
LGM, who is it aimed for? Is it just a website archiving your work? If that's the case I don't think there's anything you could really add to it and I don't think a joint blog would work. If you wanted to start something like that you'd have to give the website more of a meaning in life than 'an archive of LGM's work'.
Or something, but anyway. Nice site.
Well. I was thinking, I could use the server for the joint blog. Seeing as I have all this space..
I guess my question wasn't clear.. What NEW site could I add to my domain, like, in a sub domain, to keep people coming back?
I want it to be a site that people would WANT to come back to... But not because of a silly game or gimmick. Like, for new content and such. That's why the joint-blog idea appealed to me.
I dunno.. I'll probably think of something.
Put porns on it. I promise to visit every day if you do.
There are an extremely low number of sites that I come back to regularly. And to the ones that I do, it is because it will help me in some way. Ie - bigbluecup for ags news; various writing forums to receive/give critique.
I think a blog is a nice personal idea, but I wouldn't visit your site to read it unless you were writing about awesome visions of me in the future. To be perfectly honest, I think you should leave the site as it is, and be happy with whatever traffic you get. Putting in some random movie reviews (which are covered by rottentomato and imdb anyway...), I think, would lose a bit of the class you're trying to convey
DG, shut up. You could have the best site on the net if you would just update it. (has anyone actually read his blog, funny as heck).
LGM. Biggest mistake I see is that your blog and website are at two different places. The website is obviously about you, so why would you have it seperated? I'm sure you update your blog on a semi-regular basis (unlike DG) so that could bring people back. If for some illogical reason you are stuck on that blogger thing then see if they have a premium program that will allow you to PHP include the content of your posts there. I recommend setting up a SMF forum and a news topic that you treat like a blog. Check out my site: http://www.juncmodule.com

Truth is a few things have taken my attention away from my blog. My blog was basically just something I did to occupy my time, mainly because I was getting bored with the internet (yeah, net ennui! Who'da thunk it?). But now other things have captured my interest. Some are things that are making me laugh. Some are things where I make others laugh. Some are more personal. About half of these things, sadly, aren't internet-based.
I am in discussion with a couple of friends into making a website. But that won't happen until much later though. Like next year.
Anyway, this thread isn't about my crappy little blog. It's about LGM's website.
so when are the porns going up? just asking

Did you think of what sites YOU like visiting? What is their content? Or what sites with many visitors have to present that generates that big traffic? You may like to make a list and adapt it to your own style, work and preferences. Add your site's adress to any informal correspondence.
....
Or you may even e-mail your friends and blackmail them with photographs from primary school if they dont get three people to visit!! :P
Junc: I wanted to use Wordpress and make a site like www.phil-reed.com, but mySQL hosting is a bit outta my price range right now o_0
You can get MySQL hosting for $90 a year. That's only <$8 a month...
$7.99, actually. Yes, I know this. Maybe i'll upgrade after the summer, when I've got most of my debt paid off.
hosting.roboticalworld.com comes with MySQL included in the VERY LOW price.
Shoulda gone with them, LGM. ;)
Now the real question is, why isn't anyone using the host *I* use? It's completely awesome.
www.fuitadnet.com
3 gigs of space, 25gigs of bandwidth, PHP4, MySQL, CGI, a ton of e-mail and ftp accounts, a nice Cpanel interface, and pretty much anything else you could possibly ask for......
5$ a month.

Holy shit. Why didn't you mention this place before. The only reason I went Sitesled is because they charge monthly.. But so do these guys! w00t!
Good thing I bought my domain seperately. I'm going to do a little research now.
Appears I have jumped the gun. All the reviews about them are crap!

That is my host. Anyone that doesn't offer free PHP and MySQL is just scamming you. That's not where their costs come from. Bandwidth and Storage are where the money is at. TotalChoice has always been amazing for me, any time I have ever had a problem it has been resolved within a few hours. An example is one Sunday I crashed my server with this PHP script. I emailed them and they had it back up and running in no time. On a Sunday, for something that was my fault. Did I mention it was about 8PM. Great host, check em' out.

Well.. I've stuck with http://www.honestnetworks.com cause they custom built me my own plan..
And it's better than the ones you listed.. But shh, don't tell anyone.
Just for your own good... http://www.greenzapscam.com/
