Windows is good if you like viruses, random crashes, and being Microsoft's idiot. Ah, and it has games too.

Not to start an argument about XP vs. Linux (I have both, but I only play with Linux every once in a while), but I find that a bit ignorant.

As much as I don't like MS, I haven't seen a Windows XP crash in the past 4 years and my computers are running 95% of the time, running high-end applications. In fact, I haven't seen a virus infection on the 10 XP computers that I manage at the office (one XP machine did become unusable several times, but the user there continously installed software from unknown sources, all the time, so it's not that suprising.) A properly managed XP is fairly solid. <knocks on wood :)> It's also true, that I normally reinstall my OS every 18 months or so (my own choice, not because I have to.)

Ignorant? I have been repairing Macs and PCs professionally and I keep doing it for my friends. So I have seen enough situations to say that Windows is the most unstable choice without any doubt. Just have a look at your recommendations about how to install XP correctly in another thread, they are good recommendations and it shows that you know about what you need to keep Windows working but it's absurd you need to do it that way and it doesn't happen in Mac OS X and Linux.

I keep helping my friends but I never go from their house without recommending them a switch to a better OS. You are already playing with Linux, stop arguing with me and put your energy in learning more about it, because it will be a very valuable knowledge for you. This is a friend's recommendation.

Surely that fact that you saw more broken Windows boxes than Macs or Linux is simply a reflection on their popularity?

No, it's obviously a reflection on the fact that people get frustrated by Windows, and break those boxes :)

I prefer Ubuntu over XP. Sure, you have to install emulators yourself sometimes (will AGS Linux ever be on the Click and Run service?), but overall it runs great.
The fediverse needs great indie game developers! Find me there!

I'd prefer an OS that runs pretty much everything. SO Vista is out. Stick with XP until backwards compatiblity issues are sorted out in vista. Linux has a fine array of free software packages, but Games are pretty much out. Well not really... I use vista. There are only a few programs which dont work properly for me, and they are illegal...

I am currently using Vista (have been for about a week now). It really feels like it is somewhat unfinished. I wouldn't recommend upgrading yet to anyone. However, I bought a new computer that came with it preloaded and decided to give it a try. Honestly it isn't all that bad. A few programs won't install, sound card freaked out a little, a network file copy stopped without an error message of any sort once (worked fine when copying over the network from the XP machine, wouldn't copy over the network on the Vista machine.)

For those of you that are concerned about the XP to Vista switch, check this out:

Basically, Vista is "Windows ME 2.0"  ::)
