Title: Locking topics
Post by: | Bass | on Tue 24/08/2004 03:56:56
I was wondering.  When a moderator locks off a topic, why don't they delete it so it doesn't take up space?

*Lock*

Just kidding.

I'm probably wrong, but sometimes some really entertaining topics come up, but they stray off topic, so the mods lock them rather than delete them (for people like me to enjoy).

Aside from those instances, I don't really know.  There should be a documentary, "Inside the Moderator's Mind".

Since threads are just basically text contents, they won't use up that much of space, moreover, Pumaman did purge unimportant nonactive threads and members over time, so you don't have to worry about locked threads not deleted.

Topics were locked mainly due to:
1. Violation of rules
2. End of discussions

For 2, sometimes these threads are worth keeping (eg. the ended competitions, popular discussions), so they definately shouldn't be deleted.

More importantly, for 1, locking these threads simply helps peole to realize not to do that again, like reposting the same craps or something like:

H3Y!11! WH3R3 D1D M1 GR347 P057 G0?22?

I'll go with Gilbert. Basically, they're saving either to serve as an example, or because there might be something worth saving inside.

My name is Richard...and I'm...a moderator... :P

Mostly (in my case at least) it's for not following the forum's rules.

For instance, if your signature were a thread, it would be locked, as it breaks the rule:
NOTE: If you include an image in your signature, please ensure it is no larger than 600x50 pixels.

In the GiP I don't think it's necessary to delete them ... if the author is actually making the game it (the thread) can be unlocked for future updates.

And, as Gilbot mentioned, if threads were simply deleted you'd get thread after thread asking why it was deleted or where did it go?

*claps hands with others in the group* Bravo, Rich. I know that took a lot of courage to say that. You now, the first step to getting better is recognizing that you have a problem...

/me relapses.

I don't have a problem!! It's all of YOU! YOU did this to me!! You n00bs! ALL OF YOU!

Yeah, anyway, just thought I'd mention that in the BegTech Forum we also lock threads if they've been solved, because sometimes (for some reason) the poster wants it locked. So we do it. And we like it.

I only lock topics started by people I hate...

And since Ultimo is gone now... I have no reason to lock anything! Who wants to take his place, my locking finger is getting itchy!

Spoiler

this of course is a joke, but for some reason he thought I hated him and deleted his posts and had it out for him... I still don't think he knows why he was banned from #ags, I bet he thinks I had something to do with it

Beating is better than rape.

My rape finger is itchy.

OMG R34P!!!

Well, the moderators are doing their job well, I have no reason to wonder why something is locked... (Sometimes I wanted to reply to a locked thead, because the discussion was interesting, but I couldn't, as the thead was locked due to coursing offtopic)

Locking is far better than deleting, because then the involved people will know what they did was wrong.

Remember that if you just review the "Read before posting" thread in each forum, and follow those simple instructions, you may never have to experience moderator intervention.
I guess sometimes it can appear that we moderators are just grumpy bitches who want to give just you a hard time. If that's the case, send a pm and we'll explain our actions. Or apologise.

Yeah I must mave missed the Ultimo leaving too. Thats a shame. He was a good guy on these forums... But back on topic. I guess I have nothing more to add. Locking topics is better than deleting cos it stops there being threads asking where did a topic go, and sometimes it is an entertaining read. And also to show an example to others what not to post.

Sorry for going off topic here, but i liked Ultimo.Ã,  But his last thread (i believe it was a photoshop phriday) was childish and uncalled for.Ã,  But i look forward to his return some day.

Whenever i see a locked topic, i head right to it and read it.Ã,  I always find something interesting in them.

Wow, i've been here a year already.  Where does the time go?

Keeping offtopic, I've been here two years soon.... and something like back on topic, I've gotten... 3 or something of my 39 topics locked...?

8 % of topics locked is a very "good" percentage!  ;)

I haven't had any topic of mine locked... But after some moments of annoy I'd allways shared the opinions of the admins when they pointed me with his fingers.

Well, I always make a topic that makes sense. but that rarely happens (the topic making part I mean;))

So my topics never get locked, yay!! :P

So anyway, it's kinda weird, BUT ALWAYS people go off topic in a topic. They just start talking about something else. IF the topic was about cars then it will be about barbie dolls or something at the end.  ;)

Locking a topic and not deleting.

Also cuts down the chance of poster becoming confused, and reposting the same thread again.

Speaking of Ultimo,  why was I banned from #ags4?????

Topics are locked so that the people who posted in them have a chance to go back and work out why.
