Title: Lockity-lock-lock-lock
Post by: SSH on Wed 18/06/2003 15:17:19
I'm confused... why are "thread games" against the rules of the forum and get locked. I can't see anything against them in the rules posting...

Because their content consists entirely of either one or two word replies. ZING!!!1

If Mornington Crescent is played properly, each move should be accompanied by a long winded explanation of the "one or two word reply". e.g.

Parson's Green

Using mortimer?s 2nd amendment so that once Parsons Green has been declared forces play along the Great Western axis, obliging players to sacrifice Seven Sisters in order to prise open their opponent?s laterals.

??? I don't see the aim of this game.

Your explaination is even more baffling than your reply.

What are the rules to this game, and the point, if either even exist?

Parson's Green, Mortimer's 2nd amendment, Great Western Axis, Seven Sisters?

wtf? is this something that is only played by edinburgh smack addicts? or does the rest of the country join in?

After some googling, it seems to me that the concept Mornington Crescent is closely related to that behind Calvinball. Looks like it could be fun with good players.

Argh! Neither of those sites actually explains the dang game! They just say everyone must have played it, so they won't waste our time explaining the rules!

QuoteThere cannot be anyone in the civilised world who does not already know the basic rules of Mornington Crescent, so we shall not insult our readers by re-iterating them here.
I think that website just insulted me.
EDIT: By the way, what is this Mornington Crescent thing? Is it some kinda English game or something? I've never even heard of it.
Title: Re:Lockity-lock-lock-lock

Okok, here goes:

The idea of Mornington Crescent is to travel the UK railways to get to Mornington Crescent station.

That is the ONLY rule. Well no, in fact there is one other rule, and that is that there ARE NO RULES. The general idea is that the game is played in the style of a card/board game, with each player thinking up absurd cards to play. For example, in one game I participated in, one person eventually won by playing a card which shifted space-time 5 miles to the right, meaning that instead of being in King's Cross he ended up in Mornington Crescent.

Oh.
Do you have to know where (or what) Morningtown Crescent station is to play? Because I honestly don't have a clue. Besides I'm assuming that it's a railroad station of some sort.

Ha! I guessed* right. It is based on the same principle as Calvinball.

Bob: there is no "railroad" (I assume you mean railway :P ) station called Mornington Crescent, it's fictional. A basic knowledge of the major UK stations is helpful but by no means neccessary.

Just to add something of fibre to this thread, I know there are many much vaunted stations in the world, but I don't think any come near the brilliance of mindaribba station.

Eh? It's on the Northern Line between Euston and Camden Town: http://www.thetube.com/content/tubemap/images/tm_quad_2h.gif

It was shut for refurbishment for a while in the 90s, though.

Archangel is wrong. There are rules. And it's not like Calvinball, Fuzz, because the rules are well defined and do not change. There are many variations, but these are agreed in advance of the game.

TerranRich, you're just jealous that you don't understand... wisdom will come eventually.

Just to add to Dark Stalkey's comments, there are literally tons of places to play these games on the net -- or you can find a couple of people on MSN and play it.

However, I'm at fault too as I succumbed to playing one of those posted word games here -- not setting a very good example, am I?  :-[

Okay, I'll start a game of Mornington crescent starting in Mousehall

I play the Mornington Crescent card

This card automatically takes the user to mornington crescent. In any other logical game a card like this wouldn't be allowed, but since it has been stated that there are no rules then this isn't counted as cheating because all I'm doing is playing a card which will win the game.

I win

boy that was a fun game. Let's play again...

a) Cards? There's no cards in this game, chuck

b) There are rules: don't believe everything you read

c) Moving from Mousehall to Mornington Crescent is only allowed after 12 moves have been played, according to the Vertical Blocking section of the 1824 treaty of Tashkent

Super Scottish Hero: Let's play a game. Shoobelido, jadada tideldom poopelipood.
Other people: What are you saying? That can't be a game!
Super Scottish Hero: It is. This is how you play it: Jar-jar clopedilturdelidur, frinkilti-tinketi-plink sob.
Other people: Explain the rules instead!
Super Scottish Hero: Look at these websites.
Website # 1: This is a fun game. If you haven't played it, you must be an idiot.
Website # 2: This is a fun game. It was invented by a brittish taxi-driver a hundred years ago, and that should explain all.
Other people: We give up.

And so, other people turn off their computers and play some chess with a friend downtown.

Obviously, you're just being silly. Playing "Jar-jar clopedilturdelidur, frinkilti-tinketi-plink sob" after "Shoobelido, jadada tideldom poopelipood" contravenes the reverse doubling rule.

Look, you know that game where eveyrbody sits ina circle on the floor, somebody puts some spoons in an wierd arrangement and says "That's number five" and then someone new tries and they can't get which number it is. Eventually everybody catches on as more people work it out.

Spoiler

The number represented by the spoons is actually the number of fingers you have on the ground, but it takes a while for people to notice
[close]

And the last person(s) to "get it" are always really really annoyed at everyone else and they say how silly it is and try and mock it and they're aching inside to know the trick and they get all embarassed when they finally work it out.

To quote the professors of "The Mary Whitehouse Experience":

Well, THAT'S YOU THAT IS.

You can listen to the game being played at:

I get it now... very fun

Or I think I get it at least. Basically there are no rules until you make them up. Everytime your opponent makes a move you have to counter it with a bogus law or ordinance. The defender has to keep making up rules willy nilly, while the guy getting to Mornington crescent has to keep finding new ways of getting there. Once the defender contradicts himself with his own rule or says that something seems innocent enough, and the result is that the defender is caguht with a phony rule or the guy gets to mornington crescent, then the game is over.

back to the game: according to the vertical blocking treaty I can't move for twelve turns, I'll have some earl grey tea, whoops that took twelve turns; since the designated time frame for one term was not announced; I decided that one turn would equal one second. Therefore twelve turns have passed and I now have free access to Mornington crescent. I take the train, I win.

Sorry Dmitri, you're still not quite there. One of the codes of practice for MC players is that you don't explain the rules, obviously.

And a turn is a turn is a turn... you can't just go around redefining the meaning of words. Of course, you could make a move like Earl's Court, which would mean that I would be force onto the Victoria line unless I was careful and made a valid reverse double, or moved into "spooning". After that it would be trivial to get to MC in three.

Obviously, if you could just go straight to Mornington Crescent on your first go, there would be no point now, would there?  ;)

Archangel seem to have the idea. So as you lot understand, here's a short example:

Player 1: Canary Wharf
Player 2: Tottenham Court Road
Player 1: ooh, that was bold
Player 3: tricky, but I think I'll go with Bermondsey
Player 1: What about the level blocking?
Player 3: but I was using the Jubilee extension separation clause
Player 4: On a Friday?
Player 3: After 9am, obviously.
Player 4: In that case, I'll double on to Greenwich
Player 1: I think that I can squeeze through to Paddington
Player 3: Not when we're using the post-Millenial rules.
Player 1: Oh, you're right
Player 2: So, I'll progress to Waterloo, then
Player 1: I wish I'd done that
Player 3: Then I'm forced to Euston Square
Player 4: Oh, I see. Well, I'm blocked so it will have to be Kings Cross
Player 1: But you didn't spot that with the District Line under "hold", I can jump straight to Mornington Crescent
Player 2: Noooo!
Player 3: He's right, you know
Player 4: I should have struck out to Kensington Olympia
