My m0dem has gone mad

That's right. I'm suffering a BIZZARRE problem. Well, it's not really a problem because I like what it's doing, I just don't understand it.

My ISP dials a free-phone number (0800) in the UK, and normally makes the Dial Up sound, you know, whirrrr ee uh ee uhhh chhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh etc.

Last night, I was disconnected and a dialer tried to dial from my connection. These always fail, because the phone line has "call blocking" (meaning we can only dial free or local numbers, otherwise a special pin has to be entered first, but diallers won't know that).

So today I dial up, and everythings fine. I've connected to the ISP as usual. HOWEVER, there was no dial up noise!

Where's it gone?!

Normally it would say and do this: "Dialing" ... brief pause, then you'd hear the line tone and then the noises.

But not anymore :/

Yet it's connected.

Any ideas? Still, I'm not too fussed because now I can connect at 2am without waking my parents.

Perhaps I changed a setting or something, I don't know whether Pulse or Tone dialing affects the "noises".

There's a volume control somewhere in the Modem Control Panel, as I recall. However, it doesn't shange things on my modem. I guess that a dialer would want to turn off the sound, so you didn't realise it weas connecting you to a 1.50 a minute line...

Aha! So somewhere along the line the dialer has knocked off the sound. Fair enough! Like I say I'm not bothered because a) quiet is good and b) dialers can never get through anyway.

:)

Thanks SHH!

I'm actually considering getting a wave file of the well-remembered modem noise.  Just so when I load my computer I can play that sound and feel like I'm connecting to the 'net.

It took me forever to get used to not hearing that sound.

It's almost nostalgic to me ...

... wierd.

This sounds kinda crazy but the modem dial up noise fits ANY TUNE PERFECTLY. Try it. Somebody should do a techno freaking remix of it.
