Title: Looking for an art style
Post by: Meowster on Fri 09/09/2005 16:59:14
Hey Dudes!

Does anybody remember that guy who made Ignac? He had this fantastic, fairytale, whimsical art style that I absolutely adored. Anyway, I'm looking for art styles that are similar as I'm doing a project, but I can't seem to find anything. I really want that whimsical feeling to it, and those nice storybook colours. I'm probably not even making sense.

Anyway, does anybody have any pictures or links to webpages with this kind of art style?

Thanks :)

then my girlfriend:

then there's this awesome artist I met at MoCCA [big indie comic thing...]

Brian Froud, dark crystal dude among many other things...

When Jess gets back I'll ask her, she knows a ton of artists...

Igor was/is a big fan of the Spumco stuff, the studio/guy who made Ren & Stimpy. If you look closer, you can kind of see that the inspiration to some of his work came from those guys. Although it's not as gross as their stuff, I guess.

Hi Yusfter,
Scummbuddy brougth this thread to my attention.
Thanks a lot for such nice compliments! :)

I think Eric already gave you 2 best links.Ã,  Both Shane Glines's and Brian Froud's work is superb. the same goes for Jess's illustrations.. while i didn't hear about Doerrfeld stuff before, his illos looks great as well!
Lately i'm very much inspired by french 2d animation (Triplets de Belleville, La Building, etc..).

As for me..
my homepage is dusting for far too long.. i didn't update it for a few years (talking about lazy ass, eh?)..
so here's some old work i already have on net and am planning to put up on homepage once i'll finally kick my butt and update it:

HER! She does this totally cute comic about a monkey named Bananagins and his Shananagins.

For some reason I was always into the realistic cartoony style of Walt Disney... but then I changed to a downgraded, (or should I say a "looser" style,) that Disney introduced with its animated series Kim Possible. Here are some examples of the depleting detailed styles from Aladdin to KP:

Aladdin:
Notice the heavy detail in the background and character of the sultan. (Very nice.)

Kim Possible:
Notice the classic retro detail in the background and simple character structures... (awsome!)

I hate that show. It's so for Buffy fans who want to think they like a show like Futurama, but they don't, because it isn't, it's crap.

It was so, so very important I made that clear.

I actually watch Kim Possible sometimes just for the art, because I love the Clerks cartoon and Kim Possible shares a lot of its style as well as most of its directors.

Igor: your style has always rocked in my book! When are you going to put your own series of "How to Draw Toons" series together... I'd buy them all!!! (I'm a sucker for GREAT STYLE!)

I realize you're busy, but you could be a millionaire by now if you would have started a few years back.  :P

Scummbuddy: That art work from KYLE looks REALLY cool too! Does he visit here at all? Would love to see his art on these forums. :)

Igor DID start a few years back. He didn't just pick up a tablet pen yesterday and go, "Oh my, look at me go!".  ;)

Kyle does not come here. I don't even know if he's interested in creating games, but I am heavily interested in creating a much better website for him.
