Hi!

Dou you know how did draw the guys at the lucas arts the backrounds?
i got some pics from the secret of monkey island out ( with lucas ripper), and i have zoomed them with MS Paint. this rooms cant be drawn with computer!! every pixel is on the perfect place, and you cant find two pixels with the same color side by side.
(i hope u get what im taling about;)
have been  they drown by hand, and scanned into the computer? what technic did they use? ???

Swegi

Scummbuddy

a) the monkey island 2 backgrounds were oil painted and later scanned in. the monkey island 1 backgrounds were done pratically pixel by pixel, using a program like dpaint.
b) a lot of patience and practice
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

The question isn't entirely clear, but I think Swegi is asking about the dithering patterns.

These patterns are created with pattern brushes, which are supported by every decent paint application. The TSOMI graphics were made in dpaint, and the artists included Steve Purcell.

Swegi

thank you for the information!
"backgrounds were done pixel by pixel" :o??
its 320*144*100 (appr. number of rooms)= 4 068 000 pixels. holly cr*p!! even a "simple" blue sky was mde with 4-5 different blues, and you cant find a 1cm2 with the same color.
that must been a long work!!(do u know how long did the whole "Monkey Island I"-project take? as i know only 4 people was in the whole art work crew included. its not too much considering that over 4million pixels)
and DPaint makes this easier or faster? does this software still exist? or something alike? im about  starting an adventure game in the old school LucasArts-style, but as i see it's hard or even impossible to copy it. :-\

With the nowadays tecniques, a background can be done in one week, not sure about how did it take in the old days, but they had the filling tool and such, it was not all "pixel by pixel"...

Go to Miez's tutorials and amberfish for improving.

Don't give up... It's not that dificult.

*Edit* What a mess with the codes!  :P
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

First of all thank you for the links, ive read them trough!

i have just found out that DPaint = Deluxe Paint, but cant find it . Does a even PC version exist? the amberfish tutorial mention three function of DPaint: SMOOTH SMEAR SHADE. do they exist in modern graphic softwares (eg paintshop pro)?

talking of PSP;how can i use it with 256 color , or its better if i change the AGStudio in high color?btw the smooth function at the wrting is just the perfect effect what im looking for. is there something like that,  i could use to pictures too?(try it with 320x200, 96dpi, black background, white letters. it looks just like the NeoGeo logo)

NeoPaint was also mentioned in the tutorial. it has a sweet effect, called Gradient Fill. now i understand how did they the "4 blue color" sky. it goes really pixel by pixel from one color to the another. the only problem that its funcioning very inestimably.eg i draw 4 squers and like to fill each of em out. i have to click on the first 2-3 times till something happens, and if i want to fill the 2nd than fills the whole picture out. sometime i can do all of them but sometimes not??? programm error?

Yes, there're several versions released for the PC, even the animation one. The best for working with graphics is, Deluxe Paint 2 Enhanced. It's an OLD DOS programme and I think it's considered abandonware now, there's a link in the Paint programmes thread of the Critics forum, but I don't know if it's that version, you may need to do some googling for it if not. But remember DP2E was a DOS app., it probably won't work properly under windows (it will force full-screen at least, but I found it usuable in a window if you run it using DOSBox).

I think most of such modern and better graphics programmes surely can do that, but DP works with 256 colours natively (while most of teh modern programes work better with higher colour depth), if you're oldskool artist who loves to fiddle with palettes, then DP is the way to go, otherwise, you may try out modern alternatives.

you have to consider how much money they spected, so then you`ll know why they use so much time.
waiting for the AG of the century .....

Mr Flibble

Bear in mind that LucasArts had professional artists working pretty much 9 to 5 on those graphics.
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!
