Title: Lurkers
Post by: Valentine on Tue 17/04/2007 12:17:10
Hi there.
I'm pretty much copying this topic from a post a looong time ago, which asked the AGS lurkers to say hi. Maybe its due time to repeat it?  :)

Myself, I've been a lurker for years now, though I can't figure out how many. I remember I was lurking back when the DOS version was used, and I remember lurking on the ezboard forums. I've really only made involved myself a couple of times. I think I've had maybe three accounts, in each of which I only posted two or three posts ... I think I'm breaking my record with this account  :=. I've dropped into the AGS Irc a couple of times, including one New Years evening. I was introducing myself and mentioned I'd been around lurking for a few years, but mods sarcastically said I was lying and I got a little disenchanted. I'm sure he didnt mean anything but I was younger then and took it wrong lol.

Now I'm sure there are a bunch of lurkers on these boards, either with accounts or not even signed up yet. Anyone else care to say hello?

Yeah I remember the thread way back. Evenwolf started it, and attracted lurkers like a torch attracts mosquitos in a swamp.
I think it's good if everyone lurks a bit before posting, but years and years seem a long time...
anyhow, hello.

Hello, I am a lurker of some sort too, though my lurking time is not as long as yours.

After I wrote this for the first time I clicked on "go back" button to go back and never return here... Then it suddenly hit me. That's why I am helloing you back in the first time.

I lurked here for a while, due to my internet settings not alllowing me to reigster. Lurking is most advisable before registering, so you can get a feel for the community, years though? Why?

Dunno, I joined in the first place to ask some questions in the beginners tech. Then it was almost a year before I made it to gengen, which became my life. But the year then was because of the lack of an internet connection. Or my Amiga didn't have a card for that, so afterwards I bought a pc and stopped lurking. Oh, and the year was a good time, no-one remembered my silly first posts ;)

All I can say is I'm glad I joined when I did.  I'd hate to be a newbie joining today.

Because of the gun culture and disrespect for authority in today's forum society?

Naw, I'd only be afraid of that if I were in a position of authority.  *Wonders why he's never been made a moderator...*

Mainly because the forums are so huge now, and I would've been really intimidated, knowing absolutely nothing as I did back then.

I remember lurking through the Foz vs Vel days. I don't think I've ever read so much of a single thread since. ;D

Being a newbie is awesome though. They are bombarded with tons of games to play. I'm still new here and been donwload lots of games. I now have over 60 and only beaten about 4 of those.

I never lurked though. Once I downloaded a few games, I went to the forums and registered right away.  ;D

this community has got to have 8 times the number of lurkers these days!    Ahem, but I am told by certain authors that to appeal to a person you must address him/her individually.

Dear Sir or Madam lurking this forum,

We are a nice group here, and as you can see we act maturely compared to the majority of internet forums.   If you are here you already share a common interest and that is your love of adventure games.  Almost a dying (well who are we kidding).... a completely dead art form.   Sign the petition to bring them back by introducing yourself and if you choose, tell us about your experience with AGS.

I've become a bit of a lurker so I guess I'll post and break the stretch of silence.
I used to be around quite a bit a few years ago.  Let's see... It's probably been 3 years now because I registered 4 years ago and started hanging around more about a year after I did... ANYWAY.  I still stop by from time to time to see who's still around and how the gaming is going (I've noticed a lot of people shining up their skills over time, definitely a lot of great work going on).  I haven't posted myself in a long time, though.  Maybe I should do more of that.
Anyway, this is still a great community, as it has always been.  I think that's why it keeps so many people around...and why so many lurkers like stopping by.  A lot of great games are dreamed up and created here, and that's wonderful.

To make it short and sweet: hello again from a long ago frequenter, and good work to all you members (and lurkers--who need to join and share the work!) out there making games.   :)

Being a noob sucks.. alot of the time Mods close threads insted of answering simple questions that could save the noob hours of stress. Its all very well to tell them to refer to the Manual, but when your completely new at this, the manual isnt of much use. I think its lost its Noob Friendlyness over they years.

Im a nub.. so i try help the other nubs who get shuned when i can. Tho myself being one of the dumbest noobs ever, not much i can do :(

Hello Lurkers :D

Me, being a newbie too, I found the manual of great use, and if you ask questions nicely and maturely and in the appropriate forums then you will get an explanation and a send to the manual, and no-one will lock the thread. I remember this, because I used to ask how to make intros, and such but everyone was very good and friendly about it. Well, I'm more used to manual hunting due to my programming background, and now it's simpler to just refer to the manual, and solve problems on my own than to bother the people of Beginner's Tech. So, I completely disagree with you, it's not the mods' fault, it's your own if you start "haw do i maik g41mez l0l!" threads. And even then, mods are nice enough to take their time and help you. This is one hell of a nice community, you should be thankful you're a part of it.

PS: I lurked for about 30 minutes before I joined, and that was because I used my old P1 pc...

I've spent 90 days, 15 hours and 45 minutes on these forums (2175.75 hours). I've made 1213 posts. So for every time I've posted something, I've spent 1 hour and 45 minutes lurking (assuming it takes me an average of 3 minutes to post). Does that make me a lurker? Or does all this calculating make me some sort of obsessive freak?

I think the reason I've lurked so much is that I'm just not all that into message boards. I regularly visit various forums, but I'm not active in any of them.

Different strokes etc etc.

I think it all goes back to a traumatic childhood forum incident...  ::)

I'd just like to point out something...

If you have a lurker post, they at that point, stop being a lurker and become a poster, which instantly nullifies their reason for posting to begin with, and therefore making them a liar at the exact moment they push the post button.

Either that or I just think too much about the universe and stuff.

I lurked the AGS forums for about 1 day before i decided to become a member. I still spend most of my time lurking, especially during lunch at work when i don't have the time to log in and post. I only login once in awhile to post here and there.

I have to admit that since i registered in 2003, i think i have read the forums every day since. My doctor is right, i do have an addictive personality.

I've been a member for just over a year, but I've only posted twenty four times. I do visit pretty much every day, though. I've just never been good at integrating myself into social groups.

Or something.

Hello, my nick is Jonez and I'm a lurker (feels already better!)

I become a member as soon as I found out about AGS. But for some reason I've never managed to make any games with it.

But whats wrong? I mean I program (with BASIC-syntaxed languages), I like to make games, write stories and I'm pretty artistic. Isn't that all you need for AGS? And yet...

At the moment I am "creating" a game with AGS. This means I have an idea and something scribbled to Notepad.

When I first showed up, I posted a WHOOOOOoooollllleeee bunch!  Lots of posts, in a short period of time.  Then I got tired of that and became a lurker for a few years. :)  Now I'm not lurking anymore...wee!

Yeah, same as RedPress, I posted a lot of stuff for the first couple of months .
Then I just stopped.  I don't know why.  But I'll try to post more stuff now...

maybe...

I don't come around here as much as I used to, but I lurked here a lot. I lurked a bit in the EZboard days and I started posting more in the newer forums. I've always been someone who reads and rarely posts, and I've never really been able interact properly on the internet - it all seems a bit fake.
