I think you computers have to be "wired" together to use file sharing. I have the same thing. If I use my laptop as wireless I can use the internet but not the local network. When I plug in the wire file sharing works. I presume it has something to do with wireless connection being very insecure.

I think Eigen is right. It wouldnt even occur to me to try and share files like that, it's purely for net access isn't it?

You could get Bluetooth devices? But only for file sharing and small programs. To my knowledge you couldn't use a program installed on the main computer.

EDIT: just for the record I see now that my guess was wrong...

Not that this will be helpful...but, I know for a FACT that you can access shared files from a wireless computer in the same network. We are able to this in our home network. Now, with that said, and the reason it won't be helpful, I have no idea how to set it up.

You may want to post your operating systems (on all machines in the network), router make and model, and ISP so that others can help out more. All of that information will be important for helping you.

The only piece of information I can offer is to make sure that you have the same network set up on all of the computers (it needs to have the same name (on both machines go to "My Network Places" and click on "View workgroup computers" and make sure that the address bar lists the same location (which would be the name of your home network). Sorry, I can't help any more than that. I'm usually able to fix most of the problems with my network but it is almost always through trial and error and reinstalling the network from scratch. Good luck!

Make sure that both network connections have the client "Client for Microsoft Networks" and the service "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" installed.

Just "Install..." them in the Network Properties dialog.

Both PCs and the router must have an IP address like "10.0.1.X" or "192.168.1.X" and their subnet mask set to "255.255.255.0" (this should already be set up that way, I guess, I'm just mentioning it for reference).

As has already been said, it doesn't matter a bit if the connection is wired or wireless; and both PCs must be on the same Workgroup. Change the Workgroup's name in My Computer's properties using the "Change..." button in the "Computer Name" tab.

As a basic test, try to ping the other PC from the command line. Then open an (internet) explorer window and enter "\\" directly followed by the IP address of the other computer. (It may take a few seconds for this to work after you've changed any of the network settings; Windows is pretty slow regarding these things). You should then be able to browse shared folders and printers on the other PC.

ive got 10 computers all plugged into my hub and each uses ip addressing like 192.168.0.x and 255.255.255.0 this way all computers can see eachother. the modem is also plugged into the hub and basically all of my computers are also setup to use default gateway 10.0.0.1 and same for prefered DNS server.
