Title: Making a Shareware game.
Post by: limeTree on Sat 07/03/2009 18:06:24
I was wondering if selling a game made with ags program is possible anywhere in the world or..?
And,i also wonder if it is aceptable for a big group of people to unite in maing games with ags and sell them.

It's very much possible. From the editor-FAQ

QuoteQ. What's the deal with the license? What does it mean in plain English?

A. Adventure Game Studio is pretty much freeware. That means you may use it freely for non-commerical games, and you don't have to send me anything in return. There is one requirement - if you want to SELL a game you make, for profit, then you must contact me beforehand as there are some licensing issues which you may need to be aware of. When you finish your game, please do post it on the Announcements Forum and the Games Database so that everyone can give it a go.

However, I'd start at the start and actually try and find your way around the editor before you go all tripple A. Don't know how much you've done yet with creating games but people expect high quality of priced products.

Keep in mind to use .ogg files instead of .mp3s for sound while developing the game, this seems to be the main licensing concern. The final game should be compiled with an mp3-less version of the runtime, but you can wait to get this until the game is done as you will most likely want to use the latest version throughout development.

Castle!

I remember that game! I really liked it, enough so that I wanted to get the complete thing, but was never able to (until I found it on the net somewhere).

For me:

Haha, I did. It's not a bad game either. I also liked Jill in the Jungle a lot, that one you could play with two-players where on guy is responsible for the movement and the other one for the shooting.

Good old times...

Becouse you missed that one, here's a cover:

B.t.w.:
Did you know that Epic MegaGames was to publish the game as a sequel to Jill of the Jungle.
But Epic was not happy with the quality of the game :o, and published Jazz Jackrabbit instead.
The story was then changed and published by Union Logic as an original game.

Wolfenstein, Keen, Pickle Wars, Vinyl Goddess...not to mention:

Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
(http://ben.bacchus.com.au/vpcblog/images/cosmo14.PNG)

Hell-to-the-yeah!

I'm sure there must've been more but I can't think of them. This was mentioned, but here's a screeny:

Hocus Pocus

Edit: Oooh! How about...

There's one more I can't seem to recall the title of which is bugging the crap out of me. The title starts with an X. Sidescroller shooter game. Enemies range from robots to bees to ogres to the boss which is a giant floating head....ugh.

Edit Mark II:

You guys, always dredging up memories. I never thought ANYONE remembered Pickle Wars!

But then, there's always:

God of Thunder
(http://www.abandonia.com/files/games/217/God%20of%20Thunder_5.png)
It was just so endearing!

Amulets & Armor
(http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/doom/images/f/f0/Amulets_&_Armor.png)
Which I think had massive potential. I want to make a game like this.

I mean, wow. And remember, if you're making a shareware game, make the first episode go all out, but with promises of new tech, new graphics, and a deeper, more epic storyline in the other two episodes! (Shareware almost always comes either in a demo, or as a trilogy x3)

Commander Keen, Halloween Harry, Kilo Blaster, Duke Nukem...  Yes those were the days.  Jill of the Jungle and Vinyl Goddess From Mars they were OK but girly games.

Who can forget Epic Pinball?

or Raptor Call of the Shadows?

or Rise of the Triad (Ludicrous Gibs!!!)

Or Death Rally

Those are some of my more memorable gaming experiences.  There were others, like Secret Agent: The Hunt for Red Rock Rover which I remember as being quite entertaining.

There was this one game where you were some troll or something and you ran around collecting fruit and jumping up in trees or something.  I really can't properly remember it, but it was weird.  Anyone have any clue what that might be?  I seem to recall the title screen having a bunch of creatures and people running around and jumping etc.

Finally, there was this Jetpack game, not sure what it was called, but the full version came with a level editor which let you build your own levels to jetpack around in...  hmm...

Things are starting to flood back now...  What was that game where you flew a ship around a maze, shooting turrets, bouncing off walls, a bit like a single player subspace?

Descent was a great game (I felt really proud that I could manouver in full 720 degrees when friends still struggled with doom :) )

But this one was top down, 2d.   It was quite smooth and bouncy.  I have been searching for it and can't find it.

Also the troll game is so close but I remember the actual game was based in dos in a lower resolution.  Hm, anyway it's not important because...

I just remembered "Bio Menace", I played this one a bit, did it use the same engine as duke nukem?

Haha, some awesome memories!! I remember Jill of the Jungle (what a fittie :p) and I remember the shareware length being completely lame.

But did anyone continue to purchase any of these? How was it done? I presume it was all done through the post, or in some cases using BBS -- if so, did anyone ever order anything through BBS, and what did it entail? Was that effectively just an online order form or could you, at the time, enter CC details? Just interested.

As a (very) young developer I remember wanting nothing more than to make a shareware game ;)

I actually bought (or my father bought for me) these two:
Descent
Gobliiins (although I never played any shareware version)

The rest I played the full versions years later when I found them online. Ones on this page I've played:
All the Apogee ones
Wolfenstein 3d (or does that come under Apogee?)
Jetpack
Epic Pinball
Raptor (I spent a whole year loving this game with my friends :D...I should load it up again)
Castle

Others I haven't seen mentioned yet:
Hexagon
Spitwad Willy
There was this 1 game (which I think was more recent than the rest of these), and Akatosh's screenshot (http://www.avernum.com/blades/images/BoAfight.jpg) reminded me of it. It was an RPG type game, I think it was isometric view, where you could choose to play as 1 of 3 characters (or maybe it was two). I always chose the magic user, who wore this cloak type thing. There were many NPCs called Serviles (I think), and name of the game was maybe Gene something or something with Cr.. I'd appreciate anyone helping me remember the name

SpiderWeb SoftWare is the best thing that ever happened to RPGs.

One I remember was called "Thors Hammer" or something like that. it was a first person rpg that was infuriatingly saveneeding.

Edit: Actually, about "The Lost Vikings", I think I had it on a shareware disc, the same one as the Thors Hammer game...

Edit: WACKY WHEELS!!!!!!!!!!   that was good.

I was SOLD. With every cell and piece of hair.
Especially since demo version had a bit different storyline/locations than full version and ended just when... when...
when you actually noticed that soliders DO flank you, flush you out of cover with a grenade and pump your sorry ass full of lead when you run out. And they were so cool, cursing through comms in a crackling voice, with heavy boots and "I'm gonna f- you up" attitude.

Gotta love the titles CJ gave his creations.
"Cars", "Nuclear", "Space Station Keeper".

If CJ ever wrote a Tetris clone, it would be called "Descending Geometrical Shapes".

I could have sworn Half Live was free at some point. I'm pretty sure I've downloaded it from steam several times. But I just checked the steam site and they are selling it for 9,99 euro now. Which is a bit of a rip off since I've brought Half life 2 for only 15 euros.

Did you know that Epic MegaGames was to publish the game as a sequel to Jill of the Jungle.
But Epic was not happy with the quality of the game :o, and published Jazz Jackrabbit instead.
The story was then changed and published by Union Logic as an original game.

Considering that Jill of the Jungle is rather low quality in and of itself (compared to everything Apogee and id were making at that time) I find that very ironic :)

A golden oldie from 21 years back: The Adventures of Captain Comic
I loved that game (and its mostly-unknown sequel, Fractured Reality). Michael Denio is probably the first successful indie game author, considering he eventually got published by Nintendo.

Edit: Actually, about "The Lost Vikings", I think I had it on a shareware disc, the same one as the Thors Hammer game...
PC Format demo disk, probably.

He wasn't, actually, the NES version of Captain Comic was an unlicensed game, therefore had nothing to do with Nintendo :)

Oh, that might explain its extreme suckiness (as opposed to the PC version, which was very good for its time)
