Title: mittE3ns
Post by: Obi on Wed 10/05/2006 01:13:28
I was just watching the Nintendo E3 conference and it got me thinking, why not have some form of AGS meet at E3 not this year obviously but sometime in the future. I’m sure some how we’d be able to get in for free with some cunning tricks.

Well... half the people aren't really interested in the big games industry, and conferences in general sound kind of a crappy setting for mittens. I'd like to have a Mittens in California for any other reason, though! We'll probably have it in America next year anyway, it's been in europe two years in a row.

AGA is at E3 at the moment, it's his second or third trip there, so perhaps it's funner than I think.

Well E3 could just be a small part of the trip; I didn’t mean literally living inside the E3 building for a week, because that would be kind of crappy. It’d be good to see some of the less-main stream stuff; it’s just a case of staying away from the big evil looking booths.

The conferences are already over for the big three, I liked Nintendo’s offerings the most.

Why would anyone want to visit the balls-kneeing robot in person?

because robots are cool even if they do inflict harm upon your danglies, which is why ninja robots are even cooler.

Call me crazy but how does one get into E3 without being a journalist or in the games industry? You can pay? I had no idea! I could have freaking gone!

Working in a games shop makes you part of the industry.

Writing a games blog makes you a games journalist.

Very, very open interpretation of the two terms.

It's true! And you might even get free sandwiches.

Seriously? Fuck. They should be tougher with the restrictions. I'd like getting into E3 to seem like a magical dream.

They should be tougher? It's a marketing exposition, do you think they'll get better press from mainstream media or bloggers and shop clerks who are dazzled by the "dream" of getting into E3?

It's like having hundreds of Harrry Knowleses running around spruiking your product because you threw them a bone, especially since so much of the gaming market relies on internet goss for purchasing and internet media regarding games is depressingly uncritical of major companies.

It's simply good marketing.

Now GDC... that's the one you actually want to get into, and it's the hard one.

No it's not.  I went to GDC in 2003.  I went as a student representative of our school's Game Development Group...  which we don't have...

It was a ton of fun.  Way better than E3, because it's for developers.  I got to take classes along side actual game developers and join in some very amazing sessions.  I met tons of folk who were like nerd-famous.  I had sushi with the art team of The Getaway (http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/adventure/getaway/index.html?q=getaway) and went to dinner with a couple folks from Secret Level (http://www.secretlevel.com/).  I shook hands with the designer of Diablo.  It was cool.  The swag wasn't as good as e3 though.

Edit: Oh yeah, I won a remote control car from Alien Ware just for walking down the aisle.  I had to give it to some kid at the hotel though because I couldn't fit it into my luggage.

Well, shit, I'm going to E3 next year. I can think of about 10 lies right now that would probably get me in. Heck, I could probably just say I'm a game designer.

It's not quite that easy, I'm afraid. You need tax documents to prove you're a legitimate business, and stuff.

Also, normal game store clerks are no longer allowed in, only people specifically chosen by the chain's head office or something.

Current pricing. (http://www.gdconf.com/register/passoptions.htm) I guess things have changed?

Hoh! Damn, that thing got a lot more expensive.  I had the equivalent of the "Tutorials Only" pass, but it was half that price.  Still, they don't check credentials like E3 does.  You just need the cash.
