Title: Mittens 05
Post by: Andail on Sun 13/03/2005 14:21:23
Hm, we're discussing Mittens here.
The location might be changing from Australia to Greece, and I've announced Sweden as an alternative place if greece won't happen. Just as long as we have it somewhere, right?

do you mean 03? (that being the swedish mittens and all)

i'm up for another trip to sweden, especially if people that haven't gone to a prior meeting go! :)

I'm going.

That is if it happens some time after 8th of July. So late July or some time in August would be fine. It could be over the weekend but it could be from monday to friday aswell (or as it was last time).

If other Finns are interested in going, we could travel together. Pessi hasn't been around in a quite a while but I have his number and I can ask if he is interested (if he doesn't show up in next couple of months).

So yesh, I'm interested in this one and I hope other people are too. Neat idea, Andail.

(Oh, and I think you meant Mittens '03, Andail...)

I'm from Kemi (Finland) and I would SOOO like to come! I'm only 15 but can I still come? Even for a day? 'Cause I really REALLY want to meet you people. And I'll cry whole summer if I can't. :'(

Post by: scotch on Sun 13/03/2005 15:52:06
Actually it's been kind of seriously suggested we hold the European meeting in Greece this summer, a few people are possible hosts for that, it's sunny and not particularly expensive to get to.  The Israeli members say they could afford that too.  I also heard a couple of previously non attending Scandinavians (including Finland!) say they could possibly make that location.

I don't think it has been mentioned on the forums, so I thought it was worth discussing here.

If it ends up being in Sweden again I'm fine with that too.

Ok, I started this thread because some people expressed interest, and I wasn't aware of the greece meeting.
Maybe it would be a good idea if those people started advertising for that quite soon?

Pablo: The age limit is set at 18 for good reasons, sorry dude. Would your parents be wild at the idea of letting you fly alone to another country to meet people off the internet at the age of 15? Mine wouldn't have been.
Title: Re: Sweaters

Mine would. I'm scarier than the average internet person though.

Greece or Sweden get my vote, more Greece than Sweden. Plus its far nearer Thira which is TOTALLY FOA! I'd like to go - but I wouldn't be able too, until July.

Title: Re: Sweaters
Post by: scotch on Sun 13/03/2005 16:33:05
Yes, it really is more about that.  It's not like we haven't had under 16s at an AGS gathering before.  But at that age, unless you're well known and trusted by the person hosting the event you are unlikely to be allowed to come. You've been a member of the forums for 3-4 months, it's not really long enough for anyone to get to know you well enough I'm afraid, maybe next year, there's usually something in Northern Europe.

Well, considering how few people responded positively to the Mittens 2005 Australia thread, we've been thinking that it's likely to be more viable to hold it in Europe where more people will be able to come along. So rather than this being a secondary "Swettens" or whatever, it's looking like it would actually be Mittens itself.
Title: Re: Sweaters
Post by: Andail on Sun 13/03/2005 17:17:25
Ok, well that's pretty swell.
I thought Spain was the secondary plan.
So, who's gonna host it in greece? Helm?
Title: Re: Sweaters
Post by: Ubel on Sun 13/03/2005 17:18:17
This is pretty unfair, because now's probably my only chance to come to Mittens in few years, cause it'll be so near. Of course if the next mittens will be held in Finland or somewhere near it, then I'll be able to come there.

And scotch: You've got a good point there. I'm not yet very known here so you don't know if you can trust me. But I can tell you, I've been workin hard to get known because I knew there will be this kind of situations.

All I ask is a little trust. So please, let me come to the mittens.
Title: Re: Sweaters
Post by: Dart on Sun 13/03/2005 17:22:05
Hmm, I vote for Greece as well, since then the Israeli members could make it to the meeting. :D

It'd also be less of an expense for me, because I would have to pay about $4000 to travel to Australia, whereas Greece would be a lot cheaper. So, if you want a higher percentage of me coming to this year's Mittens, then hold it in Greece. :D
Title: Re: Sweaters
Post by: Andail on Sun 13/03/2005 17:28:07
What percentage of you would I get here in Sweden?

J/K, I'm actually voting Greece as well. I would like to know who's hosting it, though
Title: Re: Mittens 05
Post by: Helm on Sun 13/03/2005 18:15:57
Andail, if anybody's going to host mittens in greece this summer, it's probably going to be me. Dasjoe said he had a place, but that sadly fell through (as far as I know. If this isn't so, das, please tell, it would help immensly). The only way I can host, is to rent a place for us to stay in. This means that some chipping in will be in order. Not sure yet what that means in actual money, but I'll get back to you. I am aiming for mid august so you guys make a mental note of that. My dad said he's going to help out in finding a cheap but nice place, and seemed generally enthusiastic about helping, since I've told him on numerous occasions that my sweden mittens trip was so excellent. I'm thinking a week is a good idea. What I need from you guys, is to tell me how many can make a commitment to come since I will have to book rooms and strippers and shit. Less people turning out is not a very big problem. A lot more turning out will be a big, big problem, unless they don't mind sleeping on the questionably clean floor of a hotel room.

Generally, watch this space.

P.S: any of you newer people that are considering to come that are wondering who I am, I've been away for a year or two, but prior to that I was a regular around here since ags was called AC, so I'm not a new guy that nobody knows/trusts. I'll do my best to properly handle this responisibility, if nobody else can. In the end, if it doesn't work out, there's always andail's grandpa cabin that served us so well in 2003.

I don't trust that helm guy... :P

Hey, I understand that for "official" reasons, the gathering with the name Mittens should be held in a specific location, but that doesn't stop the Australians or the Americans from having their own little gatherings, unless they all can afford to go to Mittens in Europe.

Yeah, like newbies are gonna trust the lord of the goats, devourer of souls.

I think my only affordable chance was NY and I missed that..  lookin' forward to M2K9.

Good point, here's hopin' someone puts together a mini-gathering, the footage from Gloves was awesome.

Good  to hear that Mittens is maybe moving to Europe. I'm from the US and was beginning to settle on Brittens.

As far as location, Sweden is preferable for me moneywise, but Greece intrigues me, so that could be cool. I have not yet announced my first game publicly though, hope that's not an issue.

QuoteThis is pretty unfair
Unfortuantly lots of things are unfair when you're a minor, but that's life. If something happened to an under-18 year old at one of these events the organiser would be held responsable, and i'm sure whoever took on the burden of organising this would find such a scenerio rather undesirable. It's nothing personal, just the way the laws are written.

I'd realistically be able to attend a european gathering, and I'd be very up for it. I'd perhaps need a couple of months warning as I'll be working from June onwards and would need to sort out time off and tickets and stuff, but I couldn't miss out on meeting you guys again, whether it's Greece or Sweeden.

It'd be somewhat nostalgic to hold it at the ol' mittens cabin again too!

Title: Re: Mittens 05
Post by: Haddas on Sun 13/03/2005 18:41:42
I'll sign a paper in which I state the organizer is not responsible, but the person who killed me is.
Title: Re: Mittens 05
Post by: Al_Ninio on Sun 13/03/2005 18:48:30
If it's held in Greece, it'll be about $300 US for me.
There's a 99% chance that I will be attending, as my parents are (currently) willing to pay for the trip.
Plus, if it's held in August, I'll be 18... Awesome.
Title: Re: Mittens 05
Post by: Helm on Sun 13/03/2005 18:50:18
What if I, as the organizer, killed you? THE PERFECT CRIME

Al nice how that works for you. Glad you can come. I am counting scotch, custard and al so far. Oh and Ghormak who will come regardless of whether he wants to or not. THE POWER OF HELM COMPELS THEE
Title: Re: Mittens 05
Post by: Andail on Sun 13/03/2005 19:00:16
I will try my best to come, and I shall drag Ghormak and Esseb with me, in their hair, or in their legs in case they are bald, or in their t-shirts in case both their legs are amputated.

Mid-august is fine for me. I know I won't make it if it's the first week of August, so I'm still fine.

Title: Re: Mittens 05

August is fine with me too, wherever it's held.  :)

QuoteThis is pretty unfair, because now's probably my only chance to come to Mittens in few years, cause it'll be so near.

The minimum age is set by whoever is hosting Mittens. Since it would be their legal responsibility to look after any minors who attend, please respect this and understand why a minimum age is necessary.

Hotel rooms? I found this Athenian campsite (http://www.campingdionissotis.gr/page4.html). It has a discotheque!

We'll try to avoid campings as much as possible, sorry. I'll have an update for you soon enough with more relevant information, as things are being discussed between me and dasjoe.

Also, I can tell you right now (if it wasn't clear so far) that if you're less than 18 years of age, you're not coming. Yes, I am talking about YOU, 13 year old algerian guy that loved my games and is now tearing down all his homemade posters of me in anger. Sorry.

Helm, you have to expect much more people than that....I mean, we will probably be more than last time, and already the interest is pretty big, after just a few days of advertising.

If even Dart declared an interest to come, we can expect more non-europeans signing up during the next couple of months.

It would be a shame to discourage people from coming, right?

Aim for at least 20 people. A camping site might be necessary.

As to location I'd prefer Sweden bacause it's closer but I'd be glad to see Greece as long as I can manage the trip.

Actually Andail, not that I want to discourage people from coming, but it is important that people think about it long and hard before saying that they'll be coming so we can a) minimize cancelations, most of which will have to payed for anyway if we're talking hotel rooms and b) have a very realistic estimate of how many people are coming. The latter is important, because if we are of a certain number, we have more accomodating options as to where to stay. If we're over that number, it'll probably mean camping and tents, which, I am not sure everybody's willing to spend considerable amounts of money to get involved in.

I'll get back to you with more definite information soon.

Now, I have a friend who is into adventure games (you might have seen him in some of the photos I have posted...), he knows quite a lot about AGS and he would also like to attend Mittens if he isn't busy with school. Alright, MITTENS 05 in GReece.

I so wan't to go, but I think I'm being made to get a job this summer. I may look for a job, leave a week before mittens. Then find another job after. Also I'm going to switzerland in a weeks time so I may spend all my money then, as I'm unemployed.

(does the math)

I should hopefully have about £300 all in all left over for Mittens and Brittens.

I had a thought the other day, I'll take you through my thought processes and see if anyone else agrees or stuff...

1) Mid August is going to be right in the School holidays!
2) We're all going to be over 18 (i believe)
3) No need to go peak time?

also

4) It's going to be about 42 degrees c out there, yes C unlike the British summers which are 42 degrees F!
5) Out of holidays will be much cheaper anywhere, and also towards the end!

I suggest that maybe Mittens should be put off for a later date like end of august or even the first week in september?

What made me think of this is that I'm going to have to get a summer job, and I imagine some other people might too, leaving it later means that I won;t have to quit before or ask for a weeks holiday as there is also going to be a Brittens, so I will prolly only be able to do one.

kthnxbye

Hehe CJ. I know Skippy personally, he is a good friend of mine. He has heard me talking about AGS for a couple of years now (¬¬) and he knows quite a lot about the community and the program itself. I mentioned him about the upcoming Mittens and he said he would like to go aswell so I persuaded him into registering here on the forums. :P

And there's still few months before Mittens happens, I bet he will get to known you all better!

I don't mind new members showing up, but I hope that people won't be dragging real life friends to the meeting. That's not really the idea.

Again, I probably won't be able to come  :( I'll definitely have hard time getting the Visa (which is required when you have the damn Bosnian passport) and my studies will probably get in the way. Sad :-(
But anyway, besides one small game I haven't really given much to the community, so probably no one even cares  ;D So, my plan is: 1) Finish my studies 2) Make the looong horror game I've been writing for the past... 2 years, or so 3) Attend Mittens 2006. Neat, eh?  ;D

I've been reading these forums for a pretty long time now (almost 2 years) and I have been kind of observing what happens in here, so i really know a lot about the community. I just really don't know why I didn't register here earlier :-\

Of course, I won't be coming there if you don't want me to come.

I got a message from the airline company that I've collected enough frequent flyer points to get me as far as Lithuania and back, but that doesn't seem a likely location, so Sweden or Finland would probably be best :)

Finland? Pick a time with no school for me, and I'm there unless some terrorist goes and blows off our car....

Magintz, I'm rather certain most people will have begun their studies in September. At least I have.

I think Helm has more or less nailed the date, and if people are gonna be able to book their tickets and plan stuff, maybe we need to just accept it.
Although I wish that you could attend, of course!

Anything new on this matter? I don't want to sound like an impatient little kid but I will be away 6th - 23rd of June and I'd like to book the flights before that.

Yeah, we need a little update, Helm.
The brits are stealing all the attention with their lousy mittens spin-off, where they will do lame stuff like measuring rain and eating crackers and snacks all the time.

We need to get people to realise that Mittens is the real thing.
And that Helm will dance naked every night at the local church.

Don't forget drinking cups of tea, and saying "Jolly spiffing".

Travel plans ala Suede?

Yeah, who plan to attend and HOW do you travel? Since I suddenly got a horrid amount of spare time (like being unnemployed), I'm looking over the possebilities both practical and financially to attend. Plane or train? I'm looking at you Andail ;)

I suggest people continue to use this thread for discussion over mittens if they want, and only post in the other thread for direct confirmation/details about coming. Neater.
