Title: Modelling programs
Post by: dbuske on Mon 23/07/2012 16:28:47
My computer only has 512 meg memory.
I am looking for a small modelling program.
Especially to make walkcycles.
Not the one on the forums already.

512mb RAM or hard drive? If it's hard drive, then I doubt you have the power to run anything new.
I don't know, maybe Anim8tor or something like that.

Blender will run on only 512MB of RAM but they do recommend having more:

I'd say xsi is my favorite modeling tool but 3d max/blender work too.

Milkshape is old enough that it may run on your system.

Where can I find this Milkshape?  This modelling program thread has piqued my curiosity.  Until/unless I can afford Flash for some animations, I might have to give some of these modeling programs a try.

Not to put anyone off, but unless you're planning on using pre-made, pre-rigged models (such as those found in Poser), it may take you a while to come to grips with the whole process.

I actually tried to use Poser (it has 30 day trial feature) but kind of gave up on it when I figured that I need to learn a whole program just to use one aspect of a 3d art realm and even then I'd work with Poser models, which are very uncanny valleyish to me and look plastic as all hell (unless you really know how to work with them and put them in a render that's better than the one in Poser and many people are not that good).
In the rest of 3d programs, modeling is one set of hell (because you need to get the polygon ordered so they fit the human movement and anatomy, then there's texturing the damn thing and then (for me at least) the hell of all setting bones inside the model.

Poser kind of avoids that part, but it also limits anything you can do. It's kind of similar to DAZ studio products (which are free basically)

Still haven't figured why dbuske needs it for, if it's just to extract animation for walk cycles then I guess Poser can be great and you can draw over the rendered sprites.
