Thanks for the pointers.

I've used Anvil Studio which is free and is ok if you know how to read sheet music, but is pretty awkward in my experience.

EDIT: is there a sticky thread for this question somewhere, like there is for graphics programs?  I didn't see this covered.  We should make one if there isn't... I've often thought about asking after many unfruitful googles. but I've been making do with Anvil.

If your good at guitar, then I reccomend 'Guitar Pro 4' for making midis. Its very cool.

I've got several programs:

Anvil: Bit hard to get around for a beginner, but definately of the better programs.

Midi Maker: Extremely Easy, definately reccomend it!

Sound club: Similiar, to midi maker, but more advanced.

Overall, I recomend MIdi Maker, do agoogle, youll find it!

Archangel (aka SoupDragon)

If all you want is to make MIDIs, there's an oldish program called Cakwalk Pro Audio 9, that's the easiest proggie I've found yet for knocking out midis. Newer versions of cakewalk probably have too much bloat for what you want to do. You can probably download it off kazaa get a second hand copy from ebay or somewhere ^__^

Cakewalk crashed meh computer :(

I use Anvil Studio.  It is the best!  I haven't even looked at MIDI maker or watever becasue Anvil Studio trumps all!
Much like AGS, it may be confusing at first, but keep at it, and you will suceed!!11!!1!
I fail at art.
