Title: Modern Musical Genius!
Post by: Wonkyth on Wed 28/04/2010 08:58:41
For quite a while now I've had my eye out for cases of Modern Musical Genius, and have been thoroughly enjoying those that I find.
At the moment I have:
The Phantom of the Opera;
the Rocky Horror Picture Show;
Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog;
Jeff Wayne's musical version of The War of the Worlds.

Can anyone add any more?

Do you mean only movie composers or musical geniuses everywhere?

If it's the latter, then I have to say Trent Reznor and Frank Zappa, hands down. They are two modern musical geniuses in my book, and have inspired me in all that I write :).

Hm... Titles of works are NOT modern musical geniouses. Nor is Andrew Loyd Webber actually!  :P (no vomit emoticon here... a pity really).

For classical:

Schnittke
Ligetti
Messiaen
Boulez
Thomas Ades
Penderecki
and plenty more

in film music:

Jown Williams for sure
Bernard Herman Absolutely
Michael Kamen
Leonard Bernstein (where else to put him?)
Jerry Goldsmith
and many more

In pop/rock:

Radiohead
dEUS
NIN (already mentioned)
Frank Zappa (the definition of a genious for me and already mentioned)
and plenty more

Not exactly commenting NIN music, not really my cup of tea but I get it how someone might like it, but a modern musical genius, really?

Is this seriously a thread about musicians that people might find ingenious?

Or is it about really good musicals, which the first post seems to imply?

Frank Zappa is one of the most prolific 20th century composers out there.

Philip Glass is another one, as for pop/rock I would have to say Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree.

and Meshuggah, they have started a whole new genre.
