Title: Monkey Island 1 & 2 talkies?
Post by: artphobia on Sat 10/07/2004 22:54:52
I just recently purchased the whole MonkeyIsland line.  I was just wondering if Monkey Island 1 and 2 were talkies?  MI2 was created around the same time as only talkies (from what I noticed) so it seemed some what possible to me.   ???

First LEC talkie was Loom, which was produced concurrently with MI1.

However, this was very very early days in Talkies, so the audio was in CDaudio, which is quite funny really.

Talkies didn't really become common until a year or two after MI2 though.

LEC didn't produce an "only talkie" [assuming that means a game where a disk version was not released] intil Full Throttle in 1995.

When I say "talkie" I am meaning the character's words aren't just displayed on screen but narrated with voices at the same time.Ã,  Anyways which ever was "the first talkie" isn't that important to me I just wanted to make sure Lucasarts didn't remove the voices to MI1 & MI2 (if they had some) when they put them on one CD together for their "MEGA Monkey Bundle".Ã,  I have purchased games where companies had done away with extra touchs, like sound effects, inorder to conserve CD space... :-XÃ,  Ã, So I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anythingÃ,  -- Thanks all

edited for mispelling :p

I think the only thing they changed for the re-releases was removing the copy protection and difficulty selection screens from MI2 (Well, in the Monkey Island Madness pack, which I assume is a similar if not identical release to the Mega Monkey pack)

You can still access them (if you really want) if you run the games through ScummVM.

The interface for MI1 was also changed to become like that of MI2.

And I'm unaware how any other definition of "talie" could possibly be thought to have been considered in this thread.

About loom being a talkie, it came out before MI1 and it was not a talkie.  Later on they redid it and added voices i think, originally there was no talking.  It was the weirdest of all lucasarts games.

The Mega Monkey Bundle also has MI4, as Monkey Madness doesn't.

Was Loom really released as a talkie too? Or do you mean the HOTU version?

In the bundle, TSOMI had an upgraded interface, but also with inv. icons, where before it had Last Crusade style...writing...

I'm sorry but no voices. Not now, not ever (Unless LEC sells MI).

But once you've played CMI or EMI, you put the voices in your mind, so you don't really need them.

Or if you play MI1 and 2 first, you think up your own voices! :D :D

MI and MI2 never had talkie versions, Loom did, and was shit.

QuoteAbout loom being a talkie, it came out before MI1 and it was not a talkie.

Wasn't Loom released after MI1? Otherwise, what would the point of that "Ask me about Loom" pirate in the Scumm bar be? I don't really remember which came first, but because of this, I'd guess that MI1 came first.

Anyway, yep, no voices. Thinking up your own voices is pretty cool, tho'. :P

scummvm.org, which has the games it's compatible with in order of release has them like this:

Loom
The Secret of Monkey Island
Loom (256 color CD version (talkie))
The Secret of Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's revenge
Indiana Jones 4 and the Fate of Atlantis

Oh, guess Loom did come out first then. Still it's kinda weird though.

Loom came out first on floppy, with 16 colour backgrounds and NO voices.
The CD release (several years later) had 256 colour backgrounds and voices.

Oddly enough, the CD version is terrible but the original rocks.

The CD version of Loom is talkie! I still have it and last time I checked, they all had voices. I never played the floppy version, but without anything to compare by, the CD (and Loom in general) rocks!

Meh, I hate you all. I can't join in with the chats in reminissing about the old games ya'll played because I havn't. :S I've always wanted to play the first MI games (I've seen the last 2) and I never even heard of Loom. I checked it out on a websearch and it sounds....er....."special". Anyway, I STILL havn't played them because:

1. I don't know where to look for them (the only game store I know of is Best Buy and its almost an hour drive away. Aside from WalMart that is ...)

2. Don't have alot of adventure game playing friends who would have them/lend me them

3. How many more years are they going to keep squeezing money out of these ancient games until they release them for free on the net?

I think LucasArts would rather die than let a game go free.

Deny it if you will, but LEC still makes a little money out of old games.

Of course you can find them if you know where to look, but we're above that sort of thing...
