Title: More Guest Rights!
Post by: on Wed 08/12/2004 02:35:27
I know this is not the right forum to post my topic in, but it was the only one close enough that a guest can start a topic in. I apologize for the inconvenience to all the moderators on this board.

I'm a guest, and I took a look around the site. The lack of guest rights is really starting to bug me. I know that members should have privilages (sp) that guests should not, but the grand total of boards a guest can start a topic in is a grand total of two. TWO! What is up with this? If anyone has an opinion, you can still post. In fact, I invite you to post. I would like an answer ASAP (for the non-internet-savvy, that's As Soon As Possible).

edit: fix subject

Why not register then? That's simple.
This is to prevent the forums from being bloated with unrelated threads (this increases the work load of moderators A LOT) as the member size is increasing. Guests can still reply to started threads anyway.

I know it may upset some of the guests but that rule has to be enforced, according to past experience.

Yeah. You don't need any special privilages to become a member. You can just do it. I think that guest rights are limited because there's no way to enforce rules with them. You can suspend someone's account, but not if they don't have one.

Gilbot said it already, allowing guests to post in every board would cause severe flooding... I'm curious... why don't you register?

..you don't know if CS and Quake2 are adventure games or not..? (j/k)

Whoops, it seems I have renamed the main post's subject line. I misunderstood this new feature of the Move dialog. Can a mod here please edit it back to avoid confusion? Thanks.

QuoteWhy not register then? That's simple.

Indeed.

The reason for the restrictions is that before posting here you're supposed to read the forum rules. In order to register an account, you have to read the rules and press confirm that you agree to abide by them.

And if not, Cj'll kick your punk ass outa here. In a friendly british way of  course. There is no point staying as a guest as people, i'm speaking for myself here, will not treat you with the same respect a member gets. It costs nothing to registre and we're all very friendly and nice.

I think that Einoo is under 16, because he (she?) mentioned in another thread that he/she couldn't register for a couple of years.

So we have a weird thing going on- Einoo is mature enough to follow the rules, so he/she can't register. Where as the underage people who don't follow the rules aren't mature (generalization of the century) but it makes it possible for them to register.

A paradox a paradox a most peculiar paradox!

i always thought that the rule was if you couldn't act 16 then you couldn't join. einoo seems capable of mature conversatoin and therefore should be able to join. it never stopped people likle tanker and blackman from joining.

I dunno about registering. That quiz is pretty hard. I only passed it after a week of studying.

Well actually I didn't need to do the quiz while registering... ;D

When the quiz was drafted I had tried it and got all correct though.

Right, this is most confusing. Don't you also have to be at least 13? Well... anyway, change of subject. I can't reveal TOP SECRET CLASSIFIED INFO, after all. Even my email address is fake (which, if you look at my "addresses", you probably knew that anyway). My dad is very strict about Internet stuff.

So anyway, I guess we have to go straight to the top for this one. CJ, what do you think about this?

PS: You were right, In case that isn't clear.
PPS: I hate having to repost. The only reason guests don't get to modify posts is because since we don't have iDentification (who gets that inside joke there?), we can't go changing any posts because it's not clear whether (sp) they are our own or not.

Yes, but that's a good enough reason for you to register already.

Is it that you just can't register, Einoo? Well, seeing as how you're mature enough to be one of the cool kids, I support you!

This right here is a good example of why guest can't post with all the member rights, I would think....

I don't usually go to the Hints forum, so I'd missed that post. I just have to say...

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Einoo: I said 16 because that's what it says in the three golden rules on the post reply screen. I've never even bothered to look at the test until now- CJ started that up after I joined.

I say go ahead and register. In the posts you've made you've MORE than proven that you're mature enough. You spell properly, you have well thought out comments, and you've yet to call anyone stupid names.

Come on... all the cool kids register!

I don't think I had to take a test when registering ... but I can't remember what I had for breakfast, much of a less something from damn near two years ago!Ã,  (Good lord has it been that long?)

You know what's funny ... is that while your objections to the lack of 'guests rights' make sense to you now, if you register and hang around the boards for a good ammount of time, they'll no longer make sense.Ã,  Just a hunch ;)

Come on man ... register ... I triple dog dare ya!!

Its almost been a year since I joined and I still remember that test. Its not that hard, its just common sence. If you do onot want to give out your email etc.... Just set up a gmail account or something like hotmail. Its free.

The test is really easy.  As for a gmail account, he'll need an invite to get one
Title: Re: More Guest Rights!
Post by: Pumaman on Thu 09/12/2004 17:16:18
Ah ok, if you're under 13 then that's a valid reason not to register. However, technically speaking you shouldn't be posting to the board at all if that's the case.

Unfortunately it's a legal thing, because the server is hosted in the US it has to abide by US rules on children's privacy and so legally speaking I'm not allowed to let you join.

However, I hope you appreciate the reasons why guest posting is limited -- it wasn't oriignally like this, but people being stupid with guest accounts forced us to do this.

Ah, I forgot about our stupid 13-or-over rule. A general question for the entire Internet, not just you, CJ: Why not just have under-13-year-olds not be required to give out their email address? They should find some way of letting minors register. Maybe have a special Minor Account with limited abilities? Just some ideas for anybody who has ever created a forum.

Even my email address is fake (which, if you look at my "addresses", you probably knew that anyway). My dad is very strict about Internet stuff.

If this is your main problem, afraid of getting your address out there, there is an option in registered member's profiles to hide your e-mail address fron the public, so no one can get it. So you'll have all the joys of posting without the horrors of potential poeple sending spam or worse to  your e-mail address! Mmmmmmk?

Damn you woog, you just stated what I was about to! :P The point that you can hide your email from public. I think we can trust Chris that he don't give our address' anywhere, right? RIGHT?

At one point our email address' were hidden from the public even if we had not set it to be... but now it's the way "it should"...

...hmm... why has all this spam stated appearing to my non-hotmail inbox suddenly..?? ( :P )

I now get "Lesbians Want You!" spam emails. I blame CJ. Besides, why would lesbians want me? They're lesbians for cryin' out loud.

And yeah, you can hide your email from the public. Is it just a "rule" that under-13's can't get in, or is it actually a restriction?

Well the legalities aren't the only reason. We've also found that people under 13 tend to act rather immaturely, and I for one don't have the patience to put up with all the stupid posts that kids can make.
Anyway, we've discussed this several times in the past, so I won't talk any further.

Nobody better feel sorry. We all mentioned how it could be worked around, and we even said we would like for him to stay.

I agree that guests have all the rights they need. So this guy wants to feel sorry for himself, then fine. Stay virus free, since signing up here immediatley gives everyone a new virus.  ::)  Seriously, if he really cared to make games, then he wouldn't give up.

If Einoo wanted to keep posting, he/she would register.

In today's world, who obay their parents on internet stuffa anymore? Just wondering... Do you have to tell your dad about EVERTHING you do online? Every email you get you have to read to him out loud? That sounds sick to me...

You can always get a hotmail address and register with it... I don't think MSN has the resources to send a goon to every new registered user's home to check if they really are who the say they are...

For those of you that have your emails public I would have thought you knew about this. There are a lot of web spiders designed to search forums like this for email addresses. I'm surprised you can even use your email at all without having 50-100 spam emails a day in it. And I hope that the email used here is not your primary email address.
But as I said before I would have thought you guys knew that and I am sure it was just a bit of sarcasm on your parts.

I never had any trouble with spam, actually. There WAS a time when my electronic trash inbox would have 3 to 5 junk emails a week, but even that's stopped now. And my email is catsfan915@hotmail.com, and it's always been the only one I use.
