Title: MSN changes stuff again
Post by: on Thu 09/03/2006 17:40:54
Woe is me and everyone I know!1 MSN is thinking of changing their messenger to a pay service, what are your thoughts? Though it would help start to rid the net of pesky kid users it would also create a big barrier for low-earners like me who just want to chat to people.

The article, if not yet read, aer here:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1189119.stm

I think it'll be a great shame if they choose to put this into action...anyway we can stop it? I'd doubt it if Gate's mind is set. If it happens what will we dooo? Go back to ICQ? ;)

Also - has anyone tried the Hotmail Beta? I did, but opted out after a few days because it was annoying me, no checkboxes.

We have it good at the moment, so I'm relishing it whilst i can. Anyway, just thought I'd make those of you msn dwellers who didn't hear about this aware :)

I know someone on the Live Messenger Beta.
I'm told its white and shiny.

I only use MSN because everyone else does, and its convenient for IMing. I personally think its clunky and I dislike the ads.

I got this e-mail of this some time ago, where people were gathering names to make an address for keeping it free... they asked me to write down my name and send it to as many as possible... But it's not like it's for human rights or girl scouts program, so I just deleted it. Most people had just written their msn nick there :P Frankly, I don't give a f**k what they do, there are other programs too, and I wish no-one buys msn when it's a pay service.

Don't say it... Act! Delete all the microsoft programs you have. Untill that moment, you'll be incurring into hypocrisy.

IT's not as easy as you'd reckon. Once you get rid of windows and others, you find out that in your shirt it says: Microsoft fibre, no ironing needed, and note, this is a true story...¬¬

Microsoft actually own my house, so I've got to be careful what I say.

They've got cameras everywhere.

Has googletalk got any sort of following on these boards??

well as it's technically fake and microsoft aren't gonna start charging for it then it's not really a problem.
plus googletalk is kinda crap.

Trillian is good alternative up until you realize that 90% of it is using other services like yahoo, msn, and icq.

Edit: Aha, a prank eh?  Well, I think Microsoft will still do it eventually, there's money to be made in voice chats and such afterall, and Microsoft never turns down a chance at real profit.

I happen to be a Vulcan and not a Ferrengi, and yes, I do:  once every 7 years.

i think it's more stupid that people kinda expect big companies not to care about making a profit and just want them to give stuff away for free, and they can't see how microsoft have made using a computer easier and therefore got more people using computers which has driven down hardware prices over the years.
bill gates didn't start off as a billionaire and it's not like he made all his money by running over puppies and eating babies, he provided stuff that people wanted.
i'd much rather see an end put to EA than microsoft because they really are capitalist scum.

Doesn't EA belong to microsoft?

Does Trillian have it's own IM protocol? I'd reckon if they ever made MSN Messenger a pay-service they'd put fees on the whole protocol, so you couldn't chat on MSN with even the moon without paying. Unless you hax it or something.

I'd like to use Skype but most people on my MSN contacts don't use it and don't want to use it...

Gey. Well, it was a chain-mail to start with anyway so I guess it makes sense that it's all bullcrap :P

Thanks for pointing that out, tho, Tom :)

I agree, f*ck m$ :)

but not literally because then they'd get some gratification

Otherwise you will go insane with LUST!

And if MSN ever did ask for money I'd just get rid of it. Simple as.

Trillian isn't it's own IM client...it just connects to other clients...that's all.  But I like it because it connects to all the clients my friends use at once, via one program, and it's ad free.
