Post by: niallak on Tue 06/03/2007 18:14:53
I was just wondering, even though its kind of a stuiped question, does MSPaint mean microsoft Paint and if so is that the paint program that comes free with all microsoft computers?

Well, now that this thread is up, I guess it's free reign to ask a question that's been bothering me for quite some time.

Why did they change the airbrush? Honestly, the one that came packaged with Windows 3.1 was considerably better than the random assortment of hard-edged square dots that joker makes now.

Paint.NET is a rather different paint program not made (directly) by Microsoft, the classic Paint is still the real Paint!
Avoid MS Paint if you're into art, or efficiency.

The 3.1 spraycan was different? I can't remember... seems the same as it has always been to me.

I've seen some pretty good pixel art that's been done in MSPaint.

It's handy for forcing yourself into using low colour count, although the lack of Ctrl-Click to grab a colour makes for some tedious work.

If you have nothing better it's perfectly usable, just inefficient.

Isn't there a new version coming with Vista?

You can also find good art painted upside down on the ceiling of cathedrals, or pixelled into a C64 with a joystick, I'm just saying there are nicer and faster ways to work.

Something more geared towards palette based image editing will make you think more about intelligent limited colour usage than paint will, I expect, Pro Motion or DPaint or whatever. Anyway I didn't mean to start another editor discussion.

The function to place individual pixels on a screen isn't quite enough to make a good, efficient painting program these days...

I miss Personal Paint on my Amiga. That rocked.

One thing about MSPaint that I don't get is how poeple say:

"OMG!!!! U DREW DAT IN M$PAINT!!!?!?!?!?!?!"
"Wow, thats pretty good for doing it in MSPaint.."
"Yeah I drew that, AND I did it in MSPaint :)."

Sure its not efficient and not the best to work with, but you can still use it to make good pictures. I would choose Photoshop over it though, IMHO...

And is there a Windows version of Deluxe Paint?
Title: Re: MSPaint
Post by: scotch on Tue 06/03/2007 21:08:37
Deluxe Paint was more Amiga era (you can run it in an emulator if you wish), pro motion for Windows is designed to be similar, although it's generally more advanced, as you'd expect.

ProMotion and GrafX2 are Windows programs that are pretty "d-painty". But there's a version of DPaint for windows as well. Good luck finding it! ;)

Link and program tested.

Well Personal paint was a lot like Deluxe Paint, but more advanced see! (uh take my word for it)

Sob! I miss it so!

Yeah (he answered, very late), 3.1 had more of a "spray" effect, which wasn't but borderlined on antialiased. After that, it just  was a couple little square dots splattered around. The original could make some cool blood and fire, but alas, no more.

And I've just got to say: I can't use MSPaint, and everything I do in it sucks, but that's not to say it can't be used to some great effect. Go find some of Helm's work and you'll know what I'm talking about.

I feel that if your not artistically inclined using MSPaint isn't really going to hinder you over using other paint programs. Yeah, it isn't a great program, but because I tend not to be interested in art myself, I'm far less prone to dig into all aspects that a decent graphics utility will offer. If you're at least somewhat interested in art, though, MSPaint should probably be avoided.

And I thought I was imagining that 3.1's spray affect was better. I'd seemed to remember it being different, but I couldn't recall how.

I only remember because when I was younger, I had Lotus Suite, one of the programs in which was one of those programs you use to make animated tutorials (ie. you do things on your computer and speak into a microphone, and the program records it all and then makes a movie out of it so you can show other people how to do things... BTW: if anyone knows of a freeware program like this I'd be grateful). I used to make crappy animations in MSPaint by drawing guys and then cutting them out and moving them around the screen, and they were often violent, so I would employ that spraypaint effect to splash blood all over the place. A couple years back I tried to recreate one of my more popular animations, in which two men, one of which has a giant afro, are fighting, and the afro wakes up and eats the guy it's attached to and then goes after his assailant. When the afro started eating the guy, I pulled out the spraycan and started splorting it around, and, hey howdy, instead of bloodspray I got red glitter.

I'll agree, MSPaint really isn't very efficient.  But it certainly is a lot easier to use, and to figure out than most of the paint programs I've tried.

As far as the pixel art goes; to create a pixel art masterpiece like these (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/new_icons.asp?ob=rating), you need skill.  It doesn't matter what program you're using to do it.

Why do you assume that since I make pixel art, I make it in MSpaint? That program is awful for someone who wants to make art fast and efficiently. As a pixel artist, I urge anyone with an interest in the form to instead use graphics gale, pro motion, d paint, p paint, brilliance, gfx 2, ANY other program than mspaint which is shit.

I don't assume you make it in MSPaint. I assume you could make it in MSPaint.

There's been an ongoing effort to educate pixel artists in the benefits of more proper pixelling programs over at pixelation, and to ween them off the piece of shit microsoft has by default on its oses, that's why you see me being ticked off.

I'm glad I started out using DPaint in the first place.  There's no way I would use MS Paint for anything except the MS Paint game.  I don't see why anyone would want to suffer through an inferior program with garbage controls when they can use something better and user friendly.  It must be a masochistic urge ;)

Heheheh....I used Paint quite a bit when I got bored at college and the net wasn't working. They had deleted the whole Games folder, so there was no chance of Minesweeper or solitaire either. I loaded up a 100x100, zoomed in, and had hours of fun. I'd even get into competitions with a less MSPaint-savvy friend, and usually win.

I also miss the old Paint (was it last with Windows 95?), although now I don't even remember why....I think it's eraser could go smaller and bigger than the current one.

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: Fuck no.

It's the same old program.  Without a comprehensively nit-picky comparison, it seems to be the same version as XP's.

Yeah! In 3.1 it wasnt called paint but it was called PAINTBRUSH!
MsPaint sucks a lot but MS PAiNTBRUSH rules it all.
Hope I'll find a Windows 3.11 soon to work with PAINTBRUSH (sic!) again!

I have my old Packard Bell with 3.11 sitting in the basement.  I was actually contemplating on throwing it in a dumpster behind some restaurant here in town, seeing as the garbage men won't take electronics.
