Okay, i have a slight major problem with MTV.
I've been watching (for observation purposes and because my brother is obsessed with this sort of moronic thing) MTV for two hours now, and, after also reading MTV's schedule for the next month, can honestly say it is one of the worst channels i have ever had the extreme displeasure of watching.
Okay, so, here's how the last two hours breaks down.

*Show with NOTHING to do with music.
*Another show with NOTHING to do with music.
*A solid hour of moronic and audibly painful to listen to hip hop, presented by your typical blonde ditz.
*A terrible song by a hip hop artist whose name we'll all've forgotten in a year in each ad break.
*A complete lack of rock/metal/synth/any other genre you can think of.

After flipping through their schedule, it turns out they do play some rock. One hour every two weeks. Oh boy, i can't contain myself.

I know this sort of channel is aimed at 18-year old girls focussing more on which "hottie" to take to the prom and whether or not their bodies can afford to eat a celery stick or not than anything with significance, but it feels really attatched to hip-hop and anything even vaguely hip hop related, with no real variety other than the VERY occassional pop ballad.

Anyway, after the two hours i flipped over to VH1.Ã,  *MUCH BETTER* in my opinion, as there seems to be plenty of variety spanning lots of different genres.

So, how do you feel about MTV? Do you dislike it or think i've been too harsh with the above rant?

Cheers,
Fluke.

Good rant! I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Though it would've been much funnier if you would've used the term "hibbidy-hobbidy"

MTV plays what is currently popular (if they are playing any videos at all) Way back when, it was all rock all the time, with that lovely hour a week of Yo! MTV Raps. When a song breaks into popular culture, such as "Lithium" by Evanescence it's always as short lived as that song on the charts.

In fact, there was a Korn song, where the band members used HipHop stars to represent themselves doing the video (Had, Snoop, Little Jon, and others I can't remember off hand). Johnathan Davis (Frontman for Korn) stated that they did it to get more MTV playtime. And the funny thing, because they used HipHop stars. It worked, their song was played more than any other rock song at the time (this last sentence isn't research factual, I just remember when it came out and it seemed that it was played a whole lot, more than any other rock song).

O'course way back then it was about the music and the videos, not the "Real World vs. Road Rules Challange" and "Pimping my Ride". Although, for fun, I'd like to see them pimp my 98 Kia Sephia. I used to turn on MTV when cleaning the house and stuff, didn't even need to turn on the CD player. But now they play garbage HipHop, and reality television. Even MTV2, which was supposed to go back to what the origional MTV was, started with the less videos more shows. At one point there was an MTV (or was it vh1 based) that played nothing but rock, where you'd find such gems as Primus, and all sorts of other rock bands... But because it wasn't as popular, it was dropped.

Quite sad really. But like everything, it's more about the money than the art.

So you don't think "Shake that ass, bitch" is art? I'm glad I don't get MTV in my telly, but sometimes when I make pasta I put it on, and every bloody song is indeed hiphop, with, as I said, girls shaking their booty all around. Not that I mind, but it is a bit degrading to the musci industry. I remember back in the early nineties when we used to sit at the tv with my brother and watch stuff like Prodigy - Breathe. Nowadays they all sound the same. It's like my roommate playing through his playlist, just boring hiphop. I couldn't care less.

BOYD1981

there are like 5 different MTV channels here, and they're all shit.
i used to like watching MTV in the mid 90s because they actually did play music, but i mostly watched it for Most Wanted and Beavis & Butthead...

Believe it or not, there was a time long ago when MTV had some entertainment value.  Liquid Television was a cool show, and like anything good they took it off the air to have more time for rap and hip hop garbage.

voh

MTV was cool, but now it's shyte. Basically, it's turned into a VH1-clone, which actually purchases licensed shows from VH1 to show.

Room Raiders FTL!

MTV is useless nowadays, anyway. If you want to see videoclips, that's what the intarweb is for.
Still here.

Da_Elf

ok. some of these new posts in this section are getting more and more stupid. for one thing this bunch of lines here was pathetic....

*A complete lack of rock/metal/synth/any other genre you can think of.

...now then, I dont know any music channel that shows music 24 hours a day. they do have other side shows. And all of the other lines there are pure rubish. I personally dont like rap or hip hop either but i do have enough sence to know that with the huge amount of musical genres out there and there are bound to be one or two of them i dont like so why go dissing it.
So because you dont like rap your going to call it the worst channel does that mean you would include BET as the worst channel as well since  :o OMG they show shows which dont have anything to do with music and  :o OMG they play rap music. your arguement is subjective and has absolutely no ground to stand on. heck my arguement against your arguement is subjective

EMAP own a number of (nearly) 24-hour music only channels in the uk, e.g.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_TV and  Kerrang TV

I dislike MTV for all the above reasons, but like to add some more.

#1: Guys in those half-assed dating games look like teens on steroids, girls looks like models for farm products and everybody acts like John F. Kennedy without wit or an accent (read: media trained). It's not real, it's a puppet show.
#2: Ringtone commercials. How could Nostradamus not see that comming?
#3: Materialistic overtones. Spinning rims? I don't even own a car!
#4: Those flashy documentaries which are just an excuse to show the viewers how hip and progressive MTV is. Which it's not, it just happen to profit from the things that are hip and progressive. It is always quick to ax, boycott and blackball everything that is not profitable, not hip or too progressive.
#5: People that do think MTV is hip and progressive, although it's partly their own fault for not smelling the bullshit they stept in.

PS: wasn't vh1 a country music channel?

Oliwerko

I don't watch MTV overall.
I don't mind if there are shows that have nothing to do with music. It's ok when they're good.

Also our local radios/music tv's are playing the same 5 songs repeatedly...

I usualy listen to internet metal radios through winamp  ;D

MTV's da pimp. And it makes YOU pimp if you watch it! Well, not really. But MTV is way toooo mainstream for my taste (not that I can see it at home)
Recently our local mtv channel started too, but I presume it's as useless.

Hey, this thread title just brought back an interesting memory of mine.

I attended a Christian highschool for a year, and I remember the Bible teacher saying that it's no wonder that the rest of the world hates America because they can pick up broadcasts of MTV.  I think he was actually being serious, which made it not funny.

About 80% of MTV's viewers live outside of the US.

http://www.brandchannel.com/features_effect.asp?pf_id=221

I dislike the network because it projects a very false image of America to the rest of the world. While a certain percentage of the US population emulates the hip-hop image, it is far from representative.

When I worked at Gameloft (a French mobile gaming company), they insisted on using an absurd lexicon for the games marketed to Americans. For instance, they replaced the 's' ending on plural words with 'z', omitted the 'g' from 'ing', and peppered each sentence with slang like 'cool', 'dude', 'dog', etc. The final result read like a parody of the already farcical "Dude, Where's My Car" script.

When I attempted to correct any of it, they told me (in ironically thick accents) that I wasn't the "average American" and that they knew more about American culture than I did. Obviously, they have their finger on the cultural pulse of America since they watch MTV. Sadly, I've only lived here my whole life, so I can't contradict their superior information.

I wish I was making this up.

well i dont know if its still good but i used to love muchmusic when i what living in canada. they had a good variety of stuff.

Mr Flibble

Clearly the solution is to put MTV on, and then also put the mute on. And whilst you're watching young 18 year old girls shaking their booties or having sex with Snoop Doggy Dog, or whatever the order of the day is, you put the radio on.

...Oh wait, this is the internet. Such ingenuity is no longer called for.

I've only ever watched music television at friends' houses and the like, and I guess if you like the currently popular mainstream then you'll be well away with it. But we aren't those guys, I think it's fair to say. I used just a full stop. I'm definately not one of those guys.

I remember enjoying Daria when it was on channel five, that was MTV's work wasn't it?
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

Evil

MTV ran a commercial many months ago to promote the station. There were a few of them, but all I can remember is they all started with some stupid music related skit or something and at the end it said "MTV: Don't let the name fool you. We don't play music."

One of the best ad's I've ever seen. :D

Blackthorne

MTV started off with the intention of playing music 24/7, but now it more promotes "The Culture Of Music" instead of actual music.

And, sadly, people lap it up like cats at a milk bowl.  It's selling, and people are buying.  Until the kids stop buying into it, it'll remain that way.  And the kids will NEVER stop buying into it.

Which, I suppose, is okay, because when it comes to music, art or culture - one really has to find their own way, I suppose.  Part of me just wishes there were better media outlets to guide people on their own journeys.

Own journey.... fuck... I sound like Dr. Phil.
