Title: multiplaying
Post by: InCreator on Tue 30/12/2003 10:52:05
Well, I'd like to get any info on playing old games over internet, such as shadow warrior, duke nukem 3d and so on. there's no TCP/IP play supported with those, but i guess people are playing. Patches? spec. progs? I'd like to play, but since i don't use dial-up modem, there's no way i could play them. and this TEN-internet play-thing with 3drealms games COSTS MONEY, so, yeah.
any help or hints would be appreciated.

TEN was shut down a while back anyway.

I think someone wrote a new COMMIT driver to work over the internet - that is, if you can get the game to run these days.

There are a couple of Win32 ports of Duke in progress since the source code was released - one of these might well incorporate TCP/IP support at some point.

Search for and download Legacy Doom, ZDoom, or SkullTag so you can play Doom 1 & 2 These are the ones people still play. Then get Doom Connecter so you can join and make games. Some may be laggy and there aren't too many people but, meh.

You need to insert the Doom.wad to play Doom ect.

If you need a legit copy, PM me and I can give you Doom 1/2.wad..legititmently

that's not a game in the slightest TTT

it's just a chat program

with quake and duke and blood i always always wanted to play a Coop game cause i'd rather travel through a story with some friends then just shoot at them aimlessly for a few minutes

i tried it once with a friend but our connections were wicked slow and turning all the detail down and shrinking the screen helped none

Actually, CJ told me already all I need - thanks.
Finding this commit driver was a battle by itsself, after crawling through fileplanet.com, registering multiple times and disabling "show images in web pages" (fileplanet is a dial-up'pers private hell  :o and I'm using two times faster LAN connection), I got finally the icsetup.exe. Works like magic.

hehe true i may be able to but i'd rather play half life, while i think duke is fun there are lots of aspects of the Build engine I don't really want to relive at this point in time

mouselook being one of them

Can't you play half life in coop mode?

Maybe i yould download the file, if it wasn't 122mb, and i need a patch for HL, so that's another 150mb

you can with the sven coop mod but half life has no coop mode as far as i know

other games do like quake but it's not really well implemented

i wish there were games that took it into account and by that i mean i wish people cared enough to demand it

My friend has a cable connection at work, so i'm going to ask him to download it for me, the bastard's probably going to ask me to pay for that.

Soooo, anyway, when i get it i will post here that i got it and then we can play!
It will be in about a week or so...

The problem with implementing co-op is that the levels all have to be designed so that one player can't get stuck at the back. With Duke3D, they pulled this off by always having a way back to the start of the level, but with modern games where buildings collapse behind you and so forth, it's far more difficult to ensure that none of the players get trapped somewhere.

It's a shame though yeah, co-op added a nice little dimension to games like that.
