Title: My Family's going to China...
Post by: Meowster on Sat 10/02/2007 15:36:06
...Wow.

My Mum has been offered a PhD that basically will allow her to go to China for two months every year, and she's going to take my sisters/brother with her. I'm a bit jealous, 'cause I have a job here in Brighton and all that...

I'm really excited for her. And my little sisters! They're between the ages of 6 and 15... so young and they'll be able to speak a bit of Chinese :D!

Any AGS'ers out in China? What can my lil sisters expect when they're out there? They've never actually been outside of Ireland before... so this is such an adventure for them! How quickly do you think they'll be able to talk to other kids out there and stuff?

Perhaps they'll meet up with the legendary Gilbert of Cheung? I hope they enjoy it, best of luck to them! It'll be a great experience.

Providing they don't own a Sony Nintendo handheld and get sold for slave labour, that is :D

China is great. The languages are difficult though, and you can't just buy a map and get lost, which is my preferred style of travel, because reading the chinese street signs will take forever if you don't know the language. But you should definately go there if you get the chance, or you might miss out on irresistible holiday snap opportunities

A few years back, when I was in college, I met an exchange student from Beijing. She and I were really good friends, and it was starting to be a little more than that, but when she finished college her visa expired and she went home. I've been through another girlfriend and almost gotten married since then, but a year ago she somehow found me on Skype (almost a week after I broke up with the other girl, strangely enough) and we've been talking online every night ever since. In September, I hope to go there and meet her father and see if he'll let us get together. I just went and got my passport application and photos yesterday.

Esper: Thank god you didn't marry the last bitch then ;D
Good luck in September... I personally love China and chinese people (I've met quite a few here in London).

Nothing to say yutzster really. Generally Chinese people are more open than the British and certainly Japanese, but more close than...let's say Greek... (:p)

oops... when there's 8 days left, and the holiday is on the 18th, and you're on the tenth presently, you're bound to say one instead of the other :P

Well really, although the actual new year starts on the 18th of February, you'll find people celebrating it for days after, and even weeks. :)

We'll see if I receive any red envelopes...

Ooh, I miss China so much.  I bummed around the mainland for about two months last year.  It's so easy to travel by train, especially if you take the sleeper cars.  They are like mobile hotels.

If your family ends up in Beijing or Shanghai, Yuf, I have friends who can help them out if they need it.  It's always good to have chinese speaking folks to call in case of emergencies.
