My router doesn't like me :S

Hi.

I was thinking if you could tell me something, even suggestions are ok. It seems my connection keeps turning off everytime I get big. Usually it's ok, shutting down here and there, prolly from heating up or etwas. But now it does it all the time.

I realised I've been downloading from several peers, fast lately, and at that time it keeps disconnecting me. Could it be because I'm going too fast? Sounds silly to me. But then, I plugged it in to LAN instead of using wireless, and everything went just fine :P

I'm using a bloody Belkin54g, which was one of the cheapest wireless routers...

Random suggestion 1 - can you move your wireless onto a different channel? Tools like inSSIDer will show you what other wifi connections are in your area, and you might find that the channel your router is using is already used by lots of other access points which will interfere with your signal.

Random suggestion 2 - have you tried stopping the wireless zero configuration service? If you're using the built in Windows tool to manage your wireless connections this is the service responsible for connecting you to a network. However every few minutes it also scans all available networks to see if there's a better one it can connect you to. This shouldn't cause disruption, but I've noticed periods of maybe 5 seconds of lag when playing online games over wireless.

Go to Start then Run and type "services.msc" into the box. Scroll down until you find "Wireless Zero Configuration", right-click it and click Stop.

Because the task is responsible for connecting you to a network you'll need to restart it if your connection does drop or you need to connect to something else. If this solves the problem you'll also have to do it every time you start Windows, after your wifi has connected for the first time. Of course if you're not using the Windows wireless manager this probably isn't any good to you.

Belkin 54g!

I had one of those for a while. I suffered from random dropouts of internet and not LAN. The internet would just disconnect and I'd have to restart the router. Your problem is that your router is a Belkin. All my problems were solved when I got a new one. I got the one that o2 gives out for free, but I've heard good things about Netgear too.

Heh, thanks guys. Especially Mr. Fibble, though I hope I haven't bought a piece of shit. Though with 40â,¬, what can you expect. Well, I did fine for 2 months and most of the time still.

I'll try changing the channel. That popped into my mind too, but I wasn't sure if it would help or anything.

I've got a WLAN AutoConfig set on automatic and started on this, but I don't see my computer jumping from connection to another. There's no free connections around, and once disconnected, I can't get back even if I wanted to. My home WLAN is the one thing saved and the machine's set to connect to it even if the connection is weak.

I don't like you either. You just watch yourself. We're wanted men. I have the death sentence on twelve systems.

Give your router an uppercut.  Good, old fashioned fisticuffs fix any tough situation and makes friends out of your worst enemies!

Mr Flibble

That may be the best thing I've ever heard, Prog.

Additionally, my problems with my Belkin router started unpredictably after several months of faithful service. You might try bringing it back to the shop, it should still be under warranty.
