Title: My site: unlimited space and 4GB of traffic. What to do?
Post by: Erica McLane on Tue 20/05/2003 13:17:53
I have just received a notice from my host that my account will be upgraded to unlimited space and 4 GB of traffic. I don`t know what to do with them?
Maybe I should start giving hosting packades? I need some opinions.

Be warned, 4Gb traffic isn't very much... If you were to start hosting a lot of people you could run out very quickly each month...

Hot damn.  4 gigs.  My first computer out of college was 4 gigs and I thought that was massive.  Now there are tiny iPods that hold 4 gigs.

Sigh.  I feel old.

4 gigs isn't that much trafic.   I have a small site and run about 0.5 gigs a month, and I use it alone so think how much traffic you would have. Hosting games is a good idea. I have unlimited traffic and heaps of spare webspace so I can host people's pages for free. Sorry that the itkid free hosting project crashed, we did it with the help of another host and they chickened out.

Just to give an idea for refrence Sylpher.com in total (With all hostee's) is 170 Mb. Last month 4.5 Gb of bandwidth was used and the month before 4.2 Gb. So as long as you keep it around 150mb or don't tell anyone about it you should be okay...

Then again filesize isn't everything it is how frequent those files are used so I dunno.

Thanks for the opinions. Now it would be good if somebody can teach me how to create FTP accounts with CPANEL.

Jimi - my host is www.goto.bg

What?
If you mean the Bulgarian language on goto.bg - yes. If you see some strange symbols thats problably because you haven`t installed your cyrilic support.

Figured out how to make FTP accounts in CPANEL yet, Erica?

Just in case you haven't:

In all the sections, there should be one called, "FTP". One of the options in that is, "Manage Accounts". In there, there is a link to add new accounts, and the next page is fairly self explanatory...

FTP account made...  :)

Am I the only one who doesn't ask, "what's in it for me?"  Generate some income, start a Men of AGS porn site.   (Okay, VERY little income)

Hehe  ;)

Anyway, as the other guys have said, unlimited storage space is handy, but bandwidth is the real killer. This website used up 12 GB of bandwidth last month, of which 90% was due to this forum (the AGS program download is no longer hosted on this account to save bandwidth).

Not to boast (if you view this as a good thing), but my site eviltrailmix.com ate up almost 140 GB of bandwidth in April.

I'm not sure how much the normal package costed, but every GB I go over 100 costs some ungodly amount. 5 dollars or something. I feel too guilty to ask my dad about it...  :-[

My old homepage had approx 8 gigs of bandwidth every month... I couldn't even imagine, how much could 140 gigs cost...

And thus, the primary advantage of hosting your own.  I could grab some of my extra parts and construct a P350 with 64 Megs of SDRAM with a 64M video card and 8 gigs of HD space (all of which would be overkill), purchase another wi-fi card and run one from home with a net cost to me of about 30 bucks.  The problem is that either no one would visit and I'd be wasting my time or too many people would come and steal bandwidth away from my female anatomy research.  ;)

Edit: Oh yeah, also the cost of domain registration assuming I wanted a nice personalized domain.

Do what Neole has done, but for larger files.
