Note to moderators: I wasn't sure whether this should be in the Critic's Lounge or General Discussion, since I want feed-back on the idea, but it's also rather silly and stupid. So, I took a guess and put it here. If I was wrong, I apologize.
I'm a (fiction) writer and, as a writer, I'm a bit crazy (or so I'm told). Probably because of that, I had the following idea (now is the time for other writers to cringe): Why not make games based on my stories and put them on my (not yet existent) author's website? Then I decided it was stupid idea. Then I decided that I'll do it anyway, once I've finished writing the story I'm working on and I've learned how to use the AGS.
This will (of course) make me look like I'm just a few fries short, but I like to do insane things. Otherwise, why would I have volunteered to work with the (very hyper) 5-8 year-olds in my church, considering the last three helpers all quit and it's now just me and my best friend (who is a girl who loves children as much I do(n't))?
Of course, I welcome people telling me I'm crazy. That confirms what I've suspected ever since I started writing stories when I was 5. If anyone would like to say "No, don't! Spare us the stupidity!" please tell me now so I can ignore you.Ã, ;D
Summary: as I approach the end of my book, I'm trying to think of things that will advertise it but won't take too much money (if you want to know what kind of budget I'm on, PM me, I won't waste space here). AGS lets me make games based on said book and I want to post them on my (non-existant) writer's website. The purpose, once again, is to get information about my book out and have fun at the same time. If this sounds like advertisement here, I'm not trying to do so (please see my definition of advertisement below and note that I haven't named the book and will not do so here, in respect to others and the rules).
You may feel free to make fun of me now.
For those who haven't guessed, I am serious about trying to make games based stories I've written (owing to these facts: (1) I hate thieves, and don't like to steal things already written, (2) As a writer, I know how hard it can be to write something, only to have it ripped-off in some media or other, and (3) I'm only trying to fill time when I hit writer's block, which is neverÃ, ;) ).Ã, If anyone thinks this is a bad idea, I'd like to know so I can stop before I start. Thanks for the feed-back.
P.S.
I'm not trying to look as crazy as this post may seem. If you don't understand this post, I'll try to fix it.
P.P.S.
Another crazy idea I had was to film commercials and put them on TV, but when I saw the cost, I realized it was prohibitive, unless I was sure the story would sell enough to recoup my costs.
P.P.P.S.
My definition of advertisement: let people know something exists without cramming down their throats.
so your idea is to make games with storylines?
that IS crazy.
Hem, I'm not sure I understand what you want from us.
I personally find that since you are a writter and want to explore the adventure making process path you are most welcome to do so. And anyway I think that 90% of the games here (and everywhere) are based on a story. I don't find it neither original nor stupid. Of course if you think that this idea is stupid or that your stories are stupid, then I don't know, it's your call. But they way you posted doesn't earn my vote of confidence.
Well, not a bad idea. But in order to say that I had to read three times your post.
Man you're crazy! (Just kidding here) ;)
I don't see stupid idea here, but stupid thread indeed.
Nobody knows your stories! So no-one can debate about stories worthy or even too crazy to make games based on them.
You could link to some and get less stupid responses then.
But anyway, welcome to the forums. Story writers are always in need (see my banner :-[)
Once again adventure games all require a story!
The better the story the stronger and more intriging the game will be!
So I also dont understand what you really want... let me guess
You want us to make games based on your sotries? Please note how
much work goes into a game. Graphics, scripting (take long if you have
any demanding stuff and dont know how to code) Story, but you have
that covered. The music.. the list is long and every entry on the list has
a rather lengthy process attatched to them. Be warned long term
commitment, and if your going it alone longer term commitment! Set
believable goals and then re-evaluate your situation cause this could
take a year or more depending on your demands and team size! And
if your book is to be released soon, know that the game wont.
Well good luck, and welcome to the coolest forum in the world!
Goldmund, the member, is a professional writer, and he is making a game. So, my advise is to politelly ask him something about how to "translate" stories from paper to computer screen. If he sees this post, I'd be glad if he can enlight us... ^_^.
