Title: My very first website (finished?)
Post by: rharpe on Wed 26/04/2006 17:01:16
Hey everyone,

I've been working on a site I've put off for some time now. I figured I'd show all of you before I published it to the world. Hey wait, you all are the world!  [ Actually I meant the search engines.  :) ]

Let me know what you think: http://2dgamers.zapto.org/index.html

I agree.

I think it looks great!

I wonder how well it will do though, getting a community going like it seems you are set up for. I like the idea, a community just for 2d games and just for serious devolopment of those games, but what would bring people there?

Oh, and I never knew you could sprite so well, good job.

Again, thank you for the praise!

I'm not sure how well it will do, but I'm hoping to attract people that are really wanting to show something for their hard work and dedication. By taking out the possible "hangout-ish" threads, and such... I really want to help people with their game developing goals. Also, by taking out the 3D element, we are guaranteed to see games in a more traditional/nostalgic style, which in my opinion, is the way games should be made, (especially adventure games.) 3D games look all the same to me. And there are so many too... where are all the 2D games?

Thanks for the compliment regarding my artwork. I don't sprite as much as I should, but when I can, I'll spend a good few hours doing so. :D

Well, I love seeing new communities form, and this particular community looks like it will be massively productive.Ã,  I registered, I'll come on when I see something I likeÃ,  ;D

PS:  About the forum, will you be making any posts soon?Ã,  I'd like to see what transpires...

PPS:  Is there a place to post 2d games we are currently developing (in the forum)?

From what I know about the forum... or forums in general, you can just create a link to your download from the place your game resides. Eventually, I would like to host the files for anyone that does not have a hosting service. I'm still learning though... I've got a ways to go. ;)

I'm sorry, I should've been more direct, I meant is there a specific forum we should post the games we're working on in.

Post the games you're working on in the: "POST UNFINISHED GAMES IN HERE!" area.

you should fix those errors (http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2F2dgamers.zapto.org%2Findex.html) you've got there :P

then you could change your onmouseover thing to preload the images so there's no delay when you first hover them. there are multiple ways to do so, i suggest redoing the whole site with CSS and ditching all javascript and tables in the process.
anyway, to preload them either put them near the end of your page with a height and width of 1:
</table>
<img src="images/button01.gif" height="1" width="1" alt="">
...
<img src="images/button06.gif" height="1" width="1" alt="">
</center>

here's a way how to do it with CSS. (http://www.netmechanic.com/news/vol6/css_no18.htm)
and look here for a javascript solution. (http://www.pageresource.com/jscript/jpreload.htm)

Wow! Thanks for the helpful tips... When I find some spare time, I would like to implement the CSS.

Wow, that's really nice, rharpe! I'll register if I may, always in support of 2D games :)

Did you create all that art? You have some amazing stuff! I love it :)

Thanks for checking it out! I really hope I can help some people achieve their game goals.

There is one section that was not "drawn" by me... the "colored line design" section. It was pre-drawn b/w line art  from some various artists on the Pixelation web forum. As a challenge, I colored them.

I like your forum rharpe!  The contests seem like they will be neat (if enough people get interested).

Do you have a topic similar to this one on any other boards to attract members?

This is the first and only place I announced my website... I do need to get the word out a little more. If anyone is interested in telling a few game-design friends of yours, by all means I would appreciate your help.  ;D

P.S. The site will be down for some time while bad weather rolls through Kansas... I don't have sufficient battery/surge backup for the server so I will have to disconnect it. Here is a link to the forum that will not be affected: http://2dgamers.boardsxp.com/
