Title: MySpace
Post by: Gregjazz on Wed 29/12/2004 04:41:17
Anyone else in AGS use MySpace?

I remember there's some sort of AGS group on Orkut (actually two of them), but wouldn't it be cool if there was one for MySpace? I mean, Orkut goes offline a lot, so I don't use it as often.

I quit myspace when News Corp. bought it. The implications of Fox news owning my pictures/personal information/blogs bothered me.

Also, I never used it anyway.

Fox bought it?  Wierd.  And creepy.  Still, myspace can be fun.

I use multiply. Its a similar sort of concept but to me it seems much less corporate. Also, the focus is not on how many 'friends' you can add, but building current relationships with people you know.
If anyone was interested, the link to my site is here (http://auhsor.multiply.com/)

I use facebook, which is specific to colleges. And I can be addicted to, but I've been on a lull, as of late.

I don't use Myspace, but I do have a blog which can be found in my signature.  It's only temporary, as I have plans for a website in the future.

Post by: TheYak on Wed 07/12/2005 10:09:59
I did for a time (having been suckered into it by friends).  After finding it didn't get along with a lot of standard HTML for customization purposes and finding 99% of the people being too irritatingly empty-headed, I ditched it.  If the only people I communicate with on MySpace are people I can speak with on the phone or in person (or, for that matter on the forums or IRC), why bother?

Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: ManicMatt on Wed 07/12/2005 10:25:38
Captainpancake! You have no friends listed. Is it that you don't want any friends on there, or you have only just started it up?

Mr. Hyde! I added you!

Sure, I only went on myspace in the first place 'cos it was a place to put my music up. Although I do like to talk to people on there sometimes and I can keep up with the sixty billion artists I listen to! (Or rather the 30 billion that have myspace profiles.)

Newbie question: What exactly is Myspace. I visit a couple of your blogs (<-what's a blog?) but found little interest. As I understand it it is some kind of "Come and meet with me, cause I like this and do that and listen to those..." something...

Can somebody fill me in to what's the purpose. Why isn't MSN enough? Or Y! Messanger?
Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: Mr Jake on Wed 07/12/2005 10:52:37
My Space is an online community. Its different to MSN or Yahoo because you don't need to know people to talk to them.

Blog is a buzz word for what is basically a personal website.

I don't use MySpace. Most profiles on there make me cry inside.

ManicMatt, I haven't explored around the livejournal thingamabob yet, I've only used it as a kind of boredom outlet so far.  I'll browse about a bit more and see whats what.
Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: Nine Toes on Wed 07/12/2005 12:06:41
I used to think MySpace was okay, until all of this "whoring" business started.  My god.

These dumb fuckers go around posting umpteen bulletins telling people to "add this person because they're fekkin awesome!!!!".  It's annoying.  They're basically trying to see how many friends they can add to their friends list, like the person who has the most added friends is anyone special because of it.

My girlfriend does it, and I really think it's utterly stupid.

Cool beans, Manic Matt.  I'll see you on MySpace.

Anarcho, I added you.  Drop me a line sometime.

I was thinking of joining Myspace but when I tried to sign up I saw something that I didn't like.

Apart from some information about you, if you live in the Uk or Us you have to put also your post code in. Which is exactly the same as your address in that matter. WTF? I wouldn't want to give away my home address just like that. Should I lie?
Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: Mr Jake on Wed 07/12/2005 12:21:47
Its not nearly the same as your address.Ã,  Post sent to "BS11 9ND" may arrive at my street (well. be returned or binned as unsendable), but it wont come to my house now, will it.Ã,

I'm not really sure why you have too though. Its most likely to help prove you live in those countries.
Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: Nikolas on Wed 07/12/2005 12:32:55
It actually depends on where you live.

Try typing in multimap SL4 2NP. You will get the street (The Friary)  the house name and everything else you ever need. And it is a sinlge house! So there I am! BTW, I don't live there any more, but just an example...

The reason why I like myspace/friendster is that you can track down people you've lost touch with.  Just this week I've learned that one of my childhood friends had a two year old kid out of wedlock and his parents bribed him with a house to get married!  And that everyone in the town I grew up in is either married/divorced/with child or all of the above.  these are useful things to know!

I have a mySpace account ... but the sloppy-ass design of the site clashes with my design-sense and I just can't get down with it.  Everything is jumbled and out of alignment.  Even messing with the code it still looks sloppy.

I like the idea of it ... just not the execution.

As a result I never use the thing.
Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: ManicMatt on Thu 28/12/2006 23:48:50
I probably posted in this thread ages ago..

My profile is more like half personal and half music actually. (See sig)

I also run Jesus Jones' myspace profile now! And the keyboardist and drummer are on there to tell me of any news!  ;D

And if that wasn't cool enough, the lead singer sent me an email thanking me for my efforts!  :D

It was my own idea to make the profile. Every other band ever has profiles, so it annoyed me that JJ didn't have one.

Post by: voh on Fri 29/12/2006 00:12:51
I have one, and though I hate it from a webdesigner's as well as from a webdeveloper's view, I do like how it sets a goal and reaches it. It's a networking site, and it does do that.

So while its execution is painful from the get, alllll the way to the go, I do embrace the idea behind it.

Also, this is my profile, purposefully kept as simple as possible, as to not be like most profile (i.e. eye-bleeding inducing rapefests): http://www.myspace.com/shadevoh

There's also two songs there (it's the flash player in the who i'd like to meet part, seemingly hard to miss, but I'm too lazy to place it elsewhere)
Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: Timosity on Fri 29/12/2006 00:45:27
I've been a member there for a couple of years, started it up as a joke when one of my friends came round one day and  introduced me to it. I mainly use it to keep in touch with a few friends, I still have not requested 1 friend since starting, and have denied most requests I get.

It's not a bad place, it's interesting how much info you can find out about friends from other peoples comments, blogs and bulletins, I wonder how many relationships this type of thing destroys.

A perfect place for stalkers, so if you want to stalk me I'm sure it wont be hard to decipher my myspace address
