Having a mentor kinda means that you're willing to learn, but if you can't even look for the answer in the first place...

The "mentor" could be there just to help with any questions at all. They might not even have anything to do with AGS Programming. But even so, if a "mentor" is asked a question that could be answered by reading the manual they could direct the "n00b" to the place where it is in the manual. It would be the "mentor"'s decision if they answer it straight up or whatever.

Also, your sig image is still too big Mozza!

How about you try and fix it in the 5 hours I have had on and off the computer since this thread was started.Ã,  :(

MrColossal

You can remove it in 3 seconds until you have the time to fix it.

Anyway what is the reason for that rule?

Squinky

Probably because this forum is one of the few out there that dosen't have gigantice sigs that are bigger that most of the posts, cluttering things up and slowing down folks on dial up....And, if I was your mentor, I would suggest fixing your sig...

Besides, I'm not sure how to interpret that animated gif. Are you saying our perception of reality is corrupt and we should therefore disregard it, thus erasing us out of our own existence? Cause that doesn't make any sense!

maybe you should change it with spiderman dancing lol

I purposely optimised the gif so that it was dial up friendly. In fact I know what it is like to see sigs that are twice the size of posts on 56kbps because I use a 56k modem. Also I fail to see how my sig clutters things up.

It is a joke implying that most of the world are so caught up with themselves that they forget everything happening around them. So, in a way I am saying that some people's perception of reality is corrupt, but not necessarily yours. I have it here because I believed (and still do believe) that everyone on this forum could appreciate a slightly intelligent joke.

I am sorry that your mind has been made up about a simple thing that could have been prevented if, in fact we had an Adoption Agency. If someone had have adopted me this conversation would never happened.

With that I am not trying to be disobidient of any rules on this forum or am I trying to annoy or be obnoxious towards any member of this forum. I must also say that I do indeed have respect for everyone and do not believe myself to be superior to any of you. I am not elitist.

Thank you to anyone who has actually read the whole way through this.

Seriously, this has gone way off-topic. Mozza, if you have a problem please keep it to PMs or IRC.

Mozza, you replied to me like if I have been starting a debate or something... I am just pointing to reality. You have been gently told to remove your signature, or changing it for some smaller one, but you've been three days around and haven't been able to find 1 minute to do it. Is that the way you have to show that adoptions would work? Not being able to predicate with the example, you've showed that this would never work. I agreed with the idea, but now I see that n00bs that don't have the intelligence/will to walk alone in the forums won't have the intelligence/will to make the effort of trying to improve.

I actually think that a system of yellow/red cards, given by moderators, would be better.

Yellow card, no matter (I.E. you keeping your signature)
2 yellow cards, 2 days without posting. (I.E. You keeping your signature after being repeteadly told to remove, the point where you are now).

2 red cards, one week without posting.
3 red cards, 2 weeks.
4 red cards, a month.
5 red cards, a ban of a year.

And x days without cards, takes the scorer to 0.

But I guess that would be too difficult for moderators and difficult to script.

EDIT: Don't want to enter in a "how to rule the forums" discussion again... It's just my opinion, what I would do, but I am not proposing it, actually, so I won't ever try to deffense it...

Please, this is not the foreign legion.
We've always kept a pretty liberal moderation policy, and it has worked so far.

As for n00bs, I still see points with having a list for experienced members who would consider private tutoring. I mean, if there is a general desire for this among newcomers, and if there are members who agree to mentor, I don't see why a lot of other people should have anything against that.

It wasn't a hit last time we did it, but things can change. Also, I know for a fact that there existed a few mentor/newcomer relations that worked out well. I believe last time we had the followings criteria for potential mentors:
* Above 18 years of age
* Should have one year's experience within the forums
* Should have released one game

If there are more requests for mentors, as well as volontary members, we can just put up a sticky, and the newcomers can pm the mentors themselves. No big deal.

Becky

Do newbies really need someone to explain the rules to them?  That's all I can really see from this "adopt a newbie" scheme...which isn't useful at all.  Let's be honest, these forums aren't actually difficult to use if you follow the rules, and if you don't then no mentor will stop that.

Let people learn from their own mistakes, that's generally the best way.

Becky, was the idea not to tudor them on using the program rather than the forum? I bet everyone can use a forum without a mentor...

Hmmm, I find that moderators seem to be more keen on this idea than others...

[edit](to the following post by Becks: Yes, I see, silly me :P in this case, I really don't see the point...

Becky

QuoteBecky, was the idea not to tudor them on using the program rather than the forum?

From the original post:

QuoteThe user who wants to be the parent figure then PMs the n00b asking if they want to be adopted by them and such. I think it is a good idea and it would help n00bs get to know their way around the forum because they could trust the person who has adopted them to reply to any questions.

I interpreted that as "tutoring to use the forum".

sorry i'm late, there was a problem with the primates, they like to fling their [insert Professor Frink style -Glavin-] all over the place.
Anyway,
i think the idea of a mentor is a good idea if executed properly, if it's a flimsy 'hey want me to be your mentor' and an even flimsier 'OK', it will be hell.

Becky, I can be your mentor. You seem so lost and confused :P
