You could also check out avast!. (Yeah, the capitalization and exclamation mark are theirs.) Also free, and has treated me well for over a year now.

If you're looking for an excellent and free anti-virus, Avast! is for you. The only problem I can find it is the scanning speed which is insanely slow.

However if you are willing pay for the best anti-virus out there, Kaspersky, with its updates every 3-4 hours and its incredibly fast scanning speed is simply the best anti-virus there is.

I'd also recommend AVG, which is also free and useful.

Oh, has anyone ever seen this? Insanely useful little online virus checker for when you're in a hurry or have limited resources available to you.

i can recommend http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable - especially when you don't want to lose performance. it's a simple but efficient on-demand scanner, no silly realtime-services
