Title: Need help with buying oil brushes
Post by: Paper Carnival on Wed 21/02/2007 17:25:44
I don't usually start new threads in here, but I need some help for my brother.

He definately loves to paint, but he somehow has the need to buy very expensive oil brushes of perfect quality, sizes ranging from very small to medium and preferably with short hair. Online shops usually offer prices ranging from 3 to 5 dollars for size #0 or #1, and he kinda feels like a professional brush should have been more expensive...

Local shops don't seem to have anything he likes. Google is my friend and everything, but I don't know how to pick from the numerous online shops that appear. I don't know which I can trust, which provide bad service, etc. Because it's real money we're talking about, I thought I'd ask this forum for recommendations as many people here work with art.

Also, how can I know about how big the brush size is equivalent in dimensions?

Thanks in advance ;D

Hi,
Ah, that is an easy question. I have painted with oils and I've found that normal brushes you can buy at newsagencies are good (where are you - country wise? I'm in Australia - newsagencies have these) and they work very well. Long wooden handle type brushes with whitish cream bristles make good oil paint brushes of many sizes from very small fine size to large size #10 to #12, and he can get flat and round bristle type brushes, and I would suggest getting both types depending on what he is wanting to paint. Those brushes cost me from 45 cents to $1.60. Do let me know if he has tried this already and how he goes if he hasn't. Hope this helps

The Joy of Painting was also shown in in the US, too bad Ross died of cancer, but I heard his son picked up his father's techniques, and is not too bad. Now to get back on topic.

i was on topic sort of. It was a wa of introducing the online shop. Whats the point of just sending a link directly to the shop if he has never heard of bob ross. however now he knows that the things sold in the shop were the tools bob used to use and he was awsome. If you look at the bottom of the wikipedia page you would see the links there
